I get a ton of questions on Beta Alanine and questions on supplements that benefit motocross riders/racer's, So I figured I would post up a article I like explaining the benefits of Beta Alanine.

Beta Alanine

How many of you have taken a pre-workout supplement and been disappointed? Are you like me and just feel shaky and hyper only to crash an hour later? Beta Alanine is one of my favorite supplements and it has the science to back it up! It is backed by major universities, has peer-reviewed studies performed on HUMANS! Not a cell, rat or goat! The science behind beta alanine is pretty simple, and it works!

Beta Alanine is a non-essential amino acid and is the only natural occurring beta-amino acid. Don’t confuse it with regular alanine, it is classified as a non-proteinogenic amino acid as it is not believe to be used in the building of proteins. Ok so by now your probably asking what are the benefits of Beta Alanine. Here they are!

Increased muscular strength and power output
Increases muscle mass
Increases anaerobic endurance
Increase aerobic endurance
Delayed muscular fatigue
Increased vasodilation/pumps

Who can benefit from supplementing Beta Alanine?

Weight lifters and bodybuilders
High intensity cross training athletes (such as MMA fighters, runners, motocross racers, hockey players, cyclists etc.)
Active individuals (men or women) who have reached a training plateau

Research has shown that you can take between 3.2 grams to 6.4 grams per day. I recommend somewhere right in the middle around 4 grams per day. One interesting thing with Beta alanine is it gives you a strange “pins and needles” feel on your skin, almost the same feeling as taking Niacin. Many users experience intense vasodilation/pumps from even the first dose! Beta Alanine increases Carnosine and carnosine is a powerful precursor in generating nitric oxide synthase.
I wish there was more educated talk on here regarding nutrition and supplementation, actually. Instead most people babble useless crap like BobbyM above. Pretty annoying.

Anyway - yeah I take B.A., and where I've noticed it most is with mountain biking. Everyone on the planet is going to doubt any supplement at some point in time, like Matt did, but with mountain biking, my preparation is way more crucial than anything, because it's so cardio-intense here in Northern Utah (high elevation and constant steep climbs). Before I ride I drink a mix of ON's Amino Energy, bulk BCAA, Beta Alanine, Creatine and sometimes Cytomax. I don't care what anyone says, I most definitely perform better - 20-25+ miles of nasty climbing and typically over 3-4,000 feet of climbing in one ride - it makes a big difference.

Of course I also need to make sure I sleep well the night before and drink tons of water all day long + eat really well.

And for what it's worth, my moto-trainer-buddy in Vegas suggests BA for his athletes as well.

BAMX- Drugs are in every professional sport (most of the time amateurs take more then pro's to try to make up for lack of talent/ work ethic). I don't want to comment much on this subject, So I will leave it at that.

"take more then pro's" ???? when???
Made me think of this old RacerX interview with John Tomac...

Now on to my favorite topic and that is performance enhancing drug use in motocross. John, do you think guys in MX are using and do you think the AMA should be testing like other professional organizations?
John:
I definitely think there should be a testing program in place. I realize it's expensive but the AMA needs to do it. MX is a fairly physical sport and there is a fair amount of money involved so I think they need to get serious about it. As to whether I think drugs are being used in the sport, it's just pure speculation but I think there are probably a few guys using them. I still think motocross is the type of sport that you can do well in with out that stuff if your willing to do the work. I would be a big supporter of getting the AMA to get a program in place immediately.

Why do you think the AMA hasn't done anything about this?
John:
I think because it is a lot of work to deal with and it can be expensive. It can also be scandalous. I mean look at cycling. It is probably the most stringently tested sport in the world but it also seems to be the most tainted because of it. It's not an easy fight. You have to be willing to take the gloves off and get bloody.

No I'm not. Apparently you did not read everything I had to say. Read the second to last sentence "of course I also need to make sure I sleep well.....drink tons of water and EAT REALLY WELL." Read before you say something completely wrong and unfounded.

I am hypoglycemic and have major issues with energy - if I don't eat "properly" before any training regimen, I fall totally flat on my face with a feeling I can barely describe, other than totally drained and hollow.

Thin line from PEDs? Really? Creatine, BA, BCAAs and caffeine? Wow; you sound Mormon Smile

As you noticed i really dislike all kind of powder and pills. For me it's like trying to find all kinds of ways around. Just like taking Peds but still manage to be legal. ..I am hypoglycemic and have major issues with energy you suddenly wrote? Didn't know that and couldn' see it in any text, sorry! I though you where a absolute normal man in best age. Training in high altitudes? I know two absolute legal and tested mixture for that. It's called Rom and Coke or Gluhwein. We use it when skiing for example in Chamonix around 3000 meter above sealevel. Everythings goes smooth after one or five of those. Noooooo problems at all! Mormon? Nja. Moran maybe..

Yeah hypoglycemic - usually don't drop that because most don't know what it is or think it's an excuse. It blows and makes things a lot harder.

Your attitude certainly isn't a bad one at all. And I do realize that my "magic pre-ride potion" can also be a mental edge that I'm relying on a tiny bit too. I get that. The longer I live here and ride at elevation, the better I feel. Every year it gets easier, but then I just push harder and go farther. Last year I barely touched 20+ miles on the mtb, now I try to do that as much as I can because I'm able to put it together.

Anyway.

Totally agree with the first line lol! That is exactly why I wrote my Motocross Training 101 E-Book to educate people on how to properly train. MX is so far behind the training/ nutrition/ supplementation side of things!

Slightly off topic...what is your thoughts on increasing testosterone. Do any of the "snake oil" products work at increasing it?

Anything over the counter that is supposed to raise testosterone levels wont work....kind of like the HGH droppers. All the Pro hormones (designer steroids that were sold over the counter) used to work, but those were hard on your liver and still not the same as the real thing.....and they banned them about 2 years back. My advice- Don't waste your money!

YOu tell me I am missing the boat on this when I bring up how skinny RV and BB are, who are trained by Aldon Baker, then you say LOL! Can't have it both ways, my poster friend!! Baker has changed alot since his RC days! Yes, he strength trains, but not pumped up!

RV and BB are two of the smallest guys on the circuit.....and RV has definitely built some muscle/strength over the years. When did I say training an MX athlete to pump them up? They shouldn't train like bodybuilders. Did you watch CNN this morning and the woman told you if you lift those 10lb dumbbells you were going to look like Arnold tomorrow? Bodybuilders abuse hormones and eat 5000 + calories a day with 5-600 grams of protein a day. You will not get "pumped up" lifting weights 3x a week for ~45 minutes with moderate weights. Seems as though you have been hanging out with the marathon runners in Whole Foods to much Wink .
Has anyone considered that there isn't one right answer ???

Not for the athlete or the trainer.............

What works for one athlete's physiology doesn't work well for another. Just like riding styles.

Yes there are some basic things that must apply to all but at this level it is sometimes the psychcological advantage of believing in your trainer and system that makes the edge.

It is a combination of many factors that can make for great fitness.

Think of Tyler Evans....he looked like a bad dude but didn't really have the best conditioning to race. Rarely does a really fit endurance athlete have that Adonis beach body look.

In the end...........what is your goal ?? What works for each athlete to get there ? There is only one way to find out..........TRAIN HARD and work it.

I think Ryan has put down some really good info in this thread. Some interesting stuff to read.

I will say that everyone's body is different and react to different things....such as supplements and training. You have to find the right recipe for yourself and and what works best.

I've been doing this sport a very long time ( as have many others on here ).....and have always looked for new things. Never hurts to try it and see if it works.

Main thing ( and most important )......is that there is no magic pill or powder. Some may help a little.....but the REAL training begins on the bike , in the gym , the pool......whatever gives you a great workout and gives you results.

Three most important things..Diet , exercise and rest. ( 4th thing in this sport would be seat time obviously ).......just find your particular recipe and make it work.

Thank you for the kind words, that is exactly what I was trying to get across, and also (I know shameless plug) exactly the reason I wrote my Motocross Training 101 E-Book is to get some CORRECT information across to a huge population of motocross riders/racers. Also works for other sports as well (I have Dylan Martin who races Snocross for Team Southside Polaris on the ECS circuit, on similar programs as well.) The book is simple to read and understand and answer's a ton of question's both amateurs and pro's have.

To check out the E-Book, I have a thread here on Vital...
