I don't think people realize how impressive it is for the US kids to fly in and race on borrowed bikes against the best kids in the world on the bikes they ride every day. The field there is incredibly deep and for the USA to have won it the last two years is amazing. The same goes for Australia and any other country swapping continents for this race. I'll thump my chest over two wins and a third in our three years of participation any day of the week.
I could not be more proud of our kids and the people who helped out team USA!!!!!
Pit Row
imagine how cool it would be as a 10 yr old to go to school and tell all ur little mates ur a world motocross champion, what a cool event.
That being said, here is my take on things:
First, it was a really good group of racers. We would love the opportunity to race those same kids on a regular basis. The field was deep and fast. That was cool.
The thought process on the team was to have one fast up and comer (Jordon) and one experienced kid (Chris Aldridge). Chris got hurt and my son was offered the shot about a week before Lorettas (end of July). We were busy getting ready for lorettas and my kid broke his foot, so that was an up and down week. When we got home, we had two weeks to either get a bike shipped, or to find a bike, find Bulgaria, and otherwise figure it out. It was a lot.
My cost to just ship a single 50 lb package to Bulgaria one way was $960 US. We found a loaner bike and decided to hide whatever parts we could in our flight bags. We arrived Tuesday but didn't see the bike until Thursday. I pieced the bike together Thursday but we had no race fuel and there were no vendors so we mooched a variety of different fuels. I am grateful for the bike but it wasn't what we were used to. I typically use a 420 main in the US for hot days, and brought 400 through 450. This bike was jetted with a 480 and was detonating so bad I was afraid to lean it down. It was different.
This race was the first time we ever did timed qualifying and there must be more of a science to it than just throwing down a few fast laps. We have to figure that out. We qualified 12th but my kid's laptimes in the race were right there with the top three or four. ARod 67 qualified around 8-9 and he is top shelf fast so we didn't feel too bad. It did seem everytime my kid tried to put in a fast lap he hit traffic but at the time we assumed it was a problem everyone faced.
The first moto my kid was near the back of the pack to the first corner but beat his way to the top five until his bike seized. Not our most organized effort. He told me he had to pass going downhill and he held it open for a triple up the hill.
Again, we would like another crack at this group and we are upset enough at ourselves to want to do it again next year.
As a side note, our suspension, one brand new boot, and the rest of our parts were lost in baggage on the way home. We have had worse weeks.
Nice to see a couple of Italians coming through as well.
