Scorpion Helmet

Edited Date/Time 8/25/2012 11:45pm
Just bought a Scorpion helmet for one of my son's. I had never seen one of these. Looks really good and has some serious features for the money. There is a air pump with a release valve to really make it fit good. At $169 I thought is was a great value too.

Haven't tried their MX helmets yet but their road racing helmets are very good especially for the price.

Just got one after having a Troy lee SE2, I like it. Not as comfy, but close. It does vent better though. I just noticed they came out with a new one too, same design but dual foam and different shell. May get one of those too.

Raced in the VX34 all season. Love the helmet. Great fit, ventilation, and light weight. I wear the Scott Recoil goggle, with no issues. If you are using a GO Pro, put a small drop of glue on the top vent.

The polly shell scares me and I can't get over it. Nice looking helmet.

Cheap Shoei? I'll stick with the vfx-w, but otherwise I think that is a good looking helmet.

I bought one for my son earlier in the summer, and just picked up one for myself. These fit great and look great! I think the fit is really important and the Shoei just wouldn't fit my 8 year old's head properly.

We use 100% racecraft goggles with the helmets. These goggles fit really well with the helmet, but you will have to remove the inner nose guard =m but no worries because the 100% goggles come with a nose guard built in.

Never fails, can't have a helmet thread without someone throwing out this cliche. Have you tested this helmet? Do you know how long it was developed before selling to the public? Ever worn one? My Guess is NO to all three.

You have an opinion and that's fine, but standing on a soap box yelling brand names doesn't impress anyone unless you have tested them all. If you are in a position to have tested every helmet and know the outcome of test results first hand, I will be the first to apologize... just let me know. My guess, though, is just another Vitard...

EDIT: Stewart: Bell, Reed: Fox, Villopoto: Thor, Dungey: Fox, Canard: Fly, Roczen: Fox, Baggett: Thor, Wilson: Thor, Millsaps: Bell, Weimer: Thor. Are they the helmets we can buy? Maybe, maybe not. Maybe just a bunch of $10 heads...

Agreed.

I wonder sometimes if the Snell rated helmets aren't "overbuilt" (too heavy, too firmly padded, excessively rigid shell) for off-road use?

Also, for the average weekend warrior, $500-$600 is a pretty steep price to pay for a piece of safety equipment that is supposed to be disposable. In my experience, people aren't as likely to toss a compromised helmet in that price range as they probably should be.

Toste: You make a good point, I never thought of it that way. My 2 boys average 3-5 helmets a year.
I replace them anytime they hit the deck. Maybe I am just being cheap but I would think twice about putting a $500 lid on the shelf with all the old helmets after a couple of rides and 1 crash.

Lots of good helmets out there, but I will never wear a poly shelled helmet.

And putting a cheap helmet on a kid? Not in my world. You can't compromise the protection of a young brain. Argue all you want about cost but in my opinion there's no cost too great to protect a child from a brain injury.

I just try and find good close outs on higher end Bell, Fox , TLD, and Shoie helmets... my fox v3, bell moto 7 and 8 ... cost around 400 bux for all 3...
Saw a guy I race bmx with take a dirt nap a few weeks ago in a cheaper dot approved helmet.... he's missing some teeth and didn't know where the heck he was for about 5 minutes...

hey Bealtejuice, did you just call me a retard? thanks no one called me retarded all day, but as the saying goes the day aint over yet.

ok here are a few helmets that i have used and seen stars in and promptly retired, some cheapos some good ones, i always buy a snell approved, but the last straw to me buying less expensive helmets was the second pic i was racing snowcross got run over by another sled that was studded and this shoie saved me, my goggle lens had a divit in it from a stud that prolly shoulda poked out my eye then id be a one eyed retard, o and it was a good crash the helmet saved my skull but i did spend a month in the hospital with a broken pelvis, see third pic

The helmet debate is as endless as the CR/KX/RM/KTM/YZ debate. Just because you spend $600 doens't mean you will be safe. I have a buddy that only wears Arai, and he's been knocked out probly 4 times in 4 years. He always buys a new one, and always says they are the best. I buy a new one roughly every year, but only spend $200 to $300 max. (MSRP) I have a buddy that is your typical parking lot racer, wears a $80 cheap helmet that's probably ten years old. He crashes pretty good about every other time we go riding and has never been KO'd. He could care less what's on his head, and you couldn't get him to buy a new Arai or Shoei even if it was for $150.00.

Point is, you can never compare any 2 crashes. Never. One guy might tip over at 5 mph and get knocked out, the other might cartwheel at 60 mph and jump right up on his feet. Just because you own the most expensive product doesn't mean it's the best, and that goes for ANYTHING you buy.

If you want to get educated, google "DOT vs SNELL helmet rating" or "DOT vs ECE rating". ECE is a new rating that even the $430 Thor helmets have, and the $400 Fly helmets have, and I think the $500 Troy Lee has. Do some reading before you say that just cause a helmet costs more it's better.

1. " Bealtejuice?"

2. Vitard, not retard. There is a difference to me.

3. A picture of 11 helmets you have had doesn't make you a helmet expert. Sorry about the accident, but how do you know the "$10 head" helmets wouldn't have had the paint scraped off the same way?"

4. You never answered the question... have you tested this helmet? It sort of affects whether your opinion matters or not to me on this...

Just because its expensive doesn't mean its quality. Likewise on the other end of the spectrum if its too cheap its probably crap. Look at how they are actually rated. My vote and especially after seeing some hard get offs and how they handled it is EVS. Their focus is just protective gear and not how many jerseys and pants they are selling, which makes me feel like they have to make sure its good for them to stick around.

As long as a helmet has skullz and gunz on it, it is good enough!

Nobody answered the question on the " Poly Shelled " helmets......and why they don't like them. I'd like to know out of my own curiosity if someone could explain it.

What is the difference in the technique that they build these Poly shelled helmets compared to something like a Shoie VFX ?

BTW.....I picked up an almost brand new Shoei VFX ( all black ) helmet a few weeks ago for $200.00. Plan on doing a full custom wrap on it in this design.

Most poly shelled helmets have a seam down the middle that can split in a hard crash. I've seen it happen 3 times, once to my cousin. I was holding his head in my lap when he died of massive head trauma.
