Here are the 2012 overall points after Southwick.
Will whoever wins the 250 class take a single digit #?
Barcia, Tomac, Musquin, Weimer, and Tickle, are all in position to earn their career # as of now.

So the question is what #'s will the guys take that are earning a Championship # or a career #?

I just found this in the rules for 2012
d. Career Numbers
1. Riders who finish in the top 10 in Championship points from
the combined Supercross, (Supercross Lites for 2013
numbers),
MX 250 and MX 450 classes from the previous
competition year will have priority for the selection of a
National two digit available number for the their career
number.

I hope Kenny can slip into that top 10. He needs that 94 magic.

Did Baggett get a permanent number last year? Or did he just land on 12?

Might want to recalculate those points.

This year, for the first time, regional 250SX class points will be added in to determine year end national numbers.

Where did you hear/read that?

It should be like that IMO. They can only earn half the points of a 450 SX rider, so they are still at a disadvantage

don't even get me started on this subject...

uh, what number would they be able to take

4, 6, 8

only ones left...because 3 will bury that number for another 10 yrs or so, no one is stupid enough to take 4...and so i guess someone is getting 8

numbering system is better than before, but the regulations are wack

Props to Brown for being able to run as well as he does and have the ability to keep the number, but I think it's kind of lame that he shows up a couple of times a year and retains such a low number. Someone who is actually riding full time should have that - it's not a number that should show up 3-4 times per year.

Race numbers should be based on the previous seasons championship standings. Simple as that.

whatever two digit number that is available.

only one rider will have a single digit option this year. as you still need to have won a full championship for a single digit.

I edited my first comment after seeing your edit in the original post.

It is weird that no one has ever mentioned that change until this late into the year. Does not make much sense to me.

Did Baggett get a permanent number last year? Or did he just land on 12?
Baggett earned his career # last year and choose 12.

Will Blake go for a single digit if (or when) he wins the Championship this year? I think he should cut that #12 in half and run # 6 for the rest of his career.

Did not know they were combining points for the 250 outdoor and indoor. I don't whether that helped or hurt us.

THis, at least the top 10. After 10th, let them keep a number for easier recognition from the masses.

Sweet. Roczen will get 94, and marv will most likely choose 25. I wonder if baggs will go for 4? I think I read that tomac would go for 4 if he ever got the chance

As a purist, I would agree on first thought. But look back at old pictures (from when national numbers were decided this way) and it's a lot harder to pick out who is who. The more recent, the better the chance you have of figuring it out (or you could be someone like TBlaizer who seems to know everythign), but it's still more difficult than seeing a photo of a green #11, for example, or a red #14. I get why they do it this way, they're trying to market the riders and bikes more. Which, in the end, is why we have professional racing.

I have a feeling that rule only pertains to career numbers.. Not for general national number placement

Just found this in the rule book about general national number placement. JT$ if you could please look into this a little more and post up what you find out that would be helpful.

e. Numbers10-999

1. Riders who finish outside the top 10 but in the top 100 will
be assigned consecutive two digit numbers until the supply
of two digit numbers are exhausted.

2. The total combined points from the Supercross,
(Supercross Lites for 2013 numbers), MX 450 and MX
250 classes will be used to determine the order.
National
numbers are then issued according to highest to lowest total
points. In case of riders having the same amount of total
points the tie is broken by the best Moto finish for those
riders. In the event you have a rider that rode just SX and
one that rode SX and Motocross, the tie would go to the
rider that rode both series.

You need to win a championship to choose a top ten number which excludes Mike Alessi from choosing #4. He chose 800 as a career number.

I'm hearing in 2013 that will be the case but this year is the same as year's past. I think that is what it alludes to in the parentheses.
