Do you think Dungey's getting slower?

Edited Date/Time 8/10/2012 4:57am
Not hating on RD, and this isn't directed toward Dungey only, he's just a current example. This applies to any top rider in general. Do you think the top riders get slower if their biggest competition isn't on the track to push them to go faster?

It's a career for them. Some days are harder, some are easier. It's like your job but with more ruts and more.... well you know.

I don't think he's getting slower any more than the other guys are getting faster from their recovery. He's getting more race experience which generally makes riders faster than just practicing.

Additionally, I think Dungey is still pushing the pace each moto. He's not taking a 5 or 10 second margin and just cruising. He's winning by close to a minute. Dungey isn't one that needs someone in his ear or corner to push him to go faster. He has the interdiscipline to push himself when the competition isn't around. The only thing he isn't getting is passing practice.

I see what you're saying about the other riders trying to get up to speed from not being on the bike due to injuries, What I'm asking is, is the current RD5 slower than the RD5 that has RV, CR, and JS on the track? Comparing the same rider to himself with and without the competition. I know RD has the discipline to push himself, but he also has the brains the back it down and play it safe. And if you back it down for too long, I would think that you would lose some speed. I'm not disagreeing with you as I see what you are saying, but like I said, I'm just comparing a single rider to himself with and without the competition.

Yeah- he so slow they use a calendar to mark his lap times.

Interesting question. It's hard to tell. I wouldn't say "getting slower" but I might say not pushing as hard. Very long term (over a period of years) this might lead to getting slower. But it's not enough for now.

Ryan had a good fight with Mike in the 1st moto at Washougal last time out but overall he hasn't had to consistently deal with another top calibre rider like himself this year (top as in the very very best there is). There hasn't been that many long drawn out, hard fought battles for him because he's plainly faster than the riders currently present.

In other words however hard he's trying... it's difficult to imagine he's pushing quite as hard as he would be if someone like RV were still out there on his tail or trying to pull away. That's human nature and it's sensible. Certainly not a dig at RD (I'm a fan), just my analysis of the question. So overall my answer is yes, fractionally.

He's practicing and learning the tracks while the others are recovering. Nothing quite like practicing with some of the fastest riders in the world.

And you as well. You just cussed out a guy online over an opinion. Even worse, an opinion about pro mx. Which really means almost nothing to the majority of the real world.

Cool. BIG PICTURE GUYS. Let's all chill out.

Though he is not having to push as hard as he was at Steel City last year - I highly doubt it.

He's actually one of the few riders out there that could actually be getting faster without any of us recognizing, due to his extremely effortless riding style.

He may be getting slower by not having the fastest guys out there pushing him to his limits, but being his main competitors aren't racing at all then he is getting slower more slowly then they are.

kinda reminds me of Jeff Emig, looks like he's cruising around slowly but in reality he's going faster than anyone.

regarding the question though, it is plausible he's not riding "AS FAST" as he would have to be if say RV, CR, JS, TC were out there... but fuck no he's not getting slower overall

Agreed. No substitute for racing. You can practice all day long but you cant reproduce race conditions or intensity. I'm not sure what the OP is looking for? So if the other top guy's were out there they would be a minute and a half ahead of the field as opposed to the 45 sec RD is now?

I look at in comparison to the 250's. Baggett, Barcia, Tomac, Roczen, and Musquin are pushing it to the ragged edge right now and it's showing with laptimes nearly identical and sometimes faster than the 450's. If RV, Canard, Reed, and Stewy were all healthy I don't think the laptimes would be nearly as similar as they are this year.

It's hard to compare laptimes from 2 diferent classes on a motocross track. This aint MotoGP on asphalt where the most influence in laptimes is from tirewear. Tracks become beat up, badly.

Even if he is slower than he woulda been with the top riders in the field, he's still on the bike and that is what matters most.

Every day you sit ringside you lose the edge, and long as he's putting in the laps,, he keeps the razor sharp.

I imagine it 'd be quite fun to run at 90-95% and beat the rest of the best by over a minute. I've found that sometimes by slowing down and not pressing you can actually go faster due to lack of small mistakes.

Bagget has had lap times right with RD but the whole top 5 of the 250's? I would have to check but I don't think so

NOT getting slower......just nobody out there to push his limits right now. Why take chances when you don't have too.

On another note.....how long will it take some of these other guys sitting on the sidelines to get back up to speed? Probably not long.....but when they do show up.....you'll see the gap get bigger between them and the rest of the pack.

Go watch Moto 2 from Red Budd. He was flat out hauling and making it look like a Sunday stroll at the same time.

Like Everts also. Ya know I saw that dude ride countless times, but it wasn't until the 2006 MXdN that I truly appreciated how fast he was..

Maybe if that little ginger dude was riding though I wouldn't of took much notice of Everts lol

Everts rides so smooth he does not appear going fast. Until you set him up vs other races, that's when you truely see how fast his ridingstyle is.
