Funny no one else had any trouble getting around slower riders. I also re-watched the broadcast to see Alessi "all over the track", looked like he held his line everywhere to me. Dungey just couldn't seal the deal, simple as that. Dungey proved his point the second moto, and that is why he is the point leader. Alessi rode an excellent first moto and he deserves some credit for stepping up and making our summer a little more interesting.

I thought it was superb defense by Alessi. If this were any other sport we'd be talking about how staunch the defenders were in keeping the other team from scoring. Even in NASCAR it would be "making his car really wide." I know Dungey was frustrated, and rightfully so, but Mike Alessi did what he had to do to win, which was out-manuever the other guy and protect himself and his position....

I wasn't there but I was watching on TV with friends, and it was downright exciting.

i waited for the re-broadcast to actually see the first motos...but i read a ton of alessi bashing on here all day saturday and before i watched the actual moto1 sunday.

Alessi didn't do anything wrong. He rode hard and benefited from a tight track. I'm not a big fan of MA800 but he rode well and didn't do anything i wouldn't have done. Dungey made a ton of mistakes and knew it. He shoulda also forced the issue and punted Mike but he chose not too. Congrats to MA

Ha...great video. Dungey is a nice guy, he should have punted MA a long time ago and sent a clear message to him about holding him up. Great job to Alessi though.

It was superb indeed. I was amazed at Mike's nerves of steel, being under attack for so long is not easy.

All good points. That's the best thing that could have happened to Alessi as far as something to build off of. And it definitely made for some good racing. I couldn't help but wonder what would have happened if say RV / RC / JS were in the second spot. Would they have made the pass?

And I'd like to know how many people crapped their pants when Dungey almost landed on them?

I'm not sure what mike lap time average was during moto 1 but i do think that he ran many laps in the 208 range.

Rubbin's racin'. Didn't Kdub punt someone at MEC last year for taking up the whole track?

If Dunge wanted it bad enough he would have been a little more aggressive.

It's certainly in RD's interest NOT to punt Alessi, he's got a chammpionship for both he and his sponsors to win. Why in the world would you punt the guy that's going to be up front with you the rest of the series? Especially when you can (and have) dropped him like a hot rock on most any given moto. RD is a championship rider that has several more to win.
Don't make enemies...but also don't give status to Alessi that you've had covered all along for finishing ahead of you in a moto that you've struggled in. Let hm know who the Alpha racer that will continue to reign in this class is....exactly as he had that second moto - with more to come.

I had a 5 lap race like that once, and I thought I was tough for holding the guy off....shit, what Alessi did makes my effort look like popcorn...the fact that even the politically correct Dungey came unhinged a bit at race end shows that it was a gnarly race.

MA800 deserved that win, period. He rode his ass off. All the nuthuggers need to give credit where it's due.

Best 450 moto ALL YEAR.

What happened to the days of block passing and aggressive riding? At least give us some of that if we are going to have to watch the same rider run away with it every weekend. Good job MA800

Well, I'd be ashamed if my team won by defending and put more thought in destroying the rivals game than in creating. But I'm from Barcelona so I can be proud of my team most of the time Smile

By the way I've been that guy on the harvester pissing sunday drivers the last month hahah

To me it looked like mike was faster in some parts but in other Dungey was a bit faster. Mike did exactly like he should have, protected the inside lines and rode a great race. Look how many MAJOR mistakes Dungey made trying to pass. He rode over his head, while Mike did not.

Would you rather see someone win who crashed and nearly jumped into the crowd 2 times or someone who rode a good strong (some say defensive) race and didn't ride over their head?

Last time I checked blocking was a big part of racing. Should we play hockey without goalies?

Speaking of faster on certain parts of the track; Baggett and Barcia seemed to have the track split in half during the second moto. Barcia would pull a gap from about the finish line to the ski jump, then Baggett would get closer. Fun to watch! Mikey and Dungey were doing the same, Dungey was just faster thru most of the track, I think.

I'm sure this has been said somewhere else, but Dungey is creating a monster due to his laid back calm- wait'em out style of racing. Mike is VERY motivated right now and the longer he races out front the bigger his stones get.

Carmichael would have nipped this in the bud and went for the kill by the second lap. RV too. Stewart also.

Dad told me when I was a kid, the longer you play games with a guy the more he thinks he can beat you. Alessi rode an A+ race and personally I don't think he was blocking.....just racing the best line and making the guy behind him deal with it.

I agree Mike did what he had to do & rode good, controlling the pace. But, other forms of motor racing having been toying with making it against the rules for years. Indy Car you could, then it was illegal, now it's controlled. Same with F1, used to be OK, then against the rules, now they're allowed to alter direction 1 time in effort to block - but not back and forth. I personally like seeing the riders go for pure speed, which is one of the things that's making the 250 class so exciting. Those kids are giving it all they're got, not riding behind them. But, in the absence of 2 similary matched riders speed-wise in the 450 class, Alessi's antics definitely make it more entertaining than a runaway.

All four motos are right here:

http://www.allisports.com/motocross/archive-2012

And there's no way I would support a rule to prevent a rider from holding off another rider by holding the inside line. Alessi was playing defense but he played it well, and fair to the rules. Dungey also played it well and to the rules, but that crash cost him two laps of work. Either way, it was a fantastic race.
