You are correct, he was AMA, my mistake...even today speaking of him we called him John Ayers of AMA...kind of a hard one to release.

I think it would be cool to add a Pro Am 125-250F class and just go to 1 40 minute moto, plus 2 laps. It will cut down on injuries and riders falling out do to heat. It will give Pro Am guys some time on a National track before they actually turn Pro.

And what is the big deal? Have you been to an N.H.R.A. race lately? Monopoly doesn't begin to describe that deal and that sport is growing by leaps and bounds...

Monster Mountain is closer to me but if they can make a quality "National" track at Barber it would be better.

It would not be the Bremen that currently exists, it would be a new one being built down the road.

Flarider you have some good ideas.

Yes, I have been to a NHRA event. They had a very large Vendor Row and you could buy t-shirts & many more types of merchandise from most of the different teams and sponsors.

The difference is control and creative control.

The teams and riders should be able to produce clothing/items of their own design and choosing and retail them, as opposed to the present system where only one company (coincidentially owned by a NPG Board Member and now GM of the NPG) may design and retail rider t-shirts of their design.

Team sponsors should be able to gain that additional exposure through marketing of clothing and items at events, that creates what are referred to in advertising as "impressions"

The more impressions a team can get their name/logo, the more value that team has to the advertiser.

If a company sells 10,000 tshirts and each tshirt is seen by an additional 1000 people, that is 10,000,000 additional impressions that company received for it's sponsorship dollar with that team....that means more money for the team and more money for the riders (and staff).

This is why NASCAR, NHRA, IRL and F1 clothing/items carry sponsor logos so prominently, to create impressions and earn money for the teams and racers.

I sponsor a small PA sprint car (and some WoO) team/racer named Brian Leppo, http://www.brianleppo.com and we get our logo on his T's that his Mom sells at a small table in the grandstands at little races all over the NE, and we get some good logo/name impressions just for being on his Tshirts.

We (or anyone) can't get that in MX/SX because teams/racers are not allowed to sell clothing/items at events and the clothing they do sell (via Moto-tee's) only logos the primary sponsors (if at all) and ignores the small contributors.

I have discussed this with DC at length and in our last brief discussion on AIM recently, he said that is changing, which makes me very happy and excited for the teams and racers

So...it is a big deal

It's additional revenue for the racers and teams

Unless you think they make too much as it is?

the riders need that stuff for sure dave! they also need real tv exposure for their sponsors.......from 1st place to last place. a little popup of some sort when a rider is on tv would help since they dont have a hood or fender to plaster a logo/billboard on.

I agree with you Dave. I overlooked the fact that "outside" teams can't sell their own products/apparel on Vendor Row.

That needs to change big time, especially when it comes to LiveNation events.

I would just be happy with a premier class with all the premier riders so the racing won't be so boring.
7/13/2008 6:37pm
Well done, Dave.

I'm only like to add-

- Entry into the race = pit access. Charging me to go into the pits after I've been charged to park and then get into the race is inexcuseable.

- 125, 250, and open class, 2 or 4 stroke, cc for cc. I think this would add a whole new dimension to the racing. Certain tracks will lend themselves to the pingers, others to the thumpers. It'll be a boon for the cash-strapped privateer, and give one more thing for fans to cheer for.

I took my wife, son and daughter to Glen Helen 2 years ago. It was miserable for the girls, for the reasons listed by Dave. This year only my son and I went to the race (in Hangtown), and I left thinking that the "value" wasn't very high. I'm having similar issues with SX, just because of the pathetic number of actual racing minutes.

Good Thread.

Hopefully it is already in the works, but I would have the series go from the west to east coast. I am sure every truck driver, team owner, and privateer would too. Here are some figures I put together.

- The mpg for the privateer rig and semis are just generous estimates.

2008 Schelude

Miles To:

SANBERNARDIO 0
SACRAMENTO 437
WORTHAM 1811
MT MORRIS 1284
LAKEWOOD 1461
BUCHANAN 1084
BUDDS CREEK 677
NEW BERLIN 400
WASHOUGAL 2848
MILLVILLE 1800
SOUTHWICK 1249
DELMONT 466

Total 13517

Gallons for Semi 1931
Price per gallon 4.81
MPG (idling?) 7?

Fuel Cost for Semi $9,288

Gallons for Truck 901
Price per gallon 4.1
MPG 15

Fuel Cost for Privateer (excludes other travel) $3,694

Revised West to East Schedule

San Bernardio 0
Sacramento 437
Washougal, WA 604
Lakewood, CO 1248
Wortham, TX 867
Millville, MN 1010
Buchanan, MI 444
Mt Morris, PA 441
Delmont, PA 85
New Berlin, NY 374
Southwick, MA 182
Budds Creek, MD 407

Total 6099

Gallons for Semi 871
Price per gallon 4.81
MPG (idling?) 7

Fuel Cost for Semi $4,191

Gallons for Truck 406
Price per gallon 4.1
MPG 15

Fuel Cost for Privateer (excludes other travel) $1,667

- I'd guess there are around 15 semis at the races and who knows how many privateer rigs going to each or most rounds.....there could be a good chunk of time, money, and oil saved.

There needs to be a 3rd class added, weather it be an open class, ProAm or something of that nature. Riders' careers at the Pro level are too short. Top lites guys are expected to move up after 2 or 3 years, then spend a few in the 450's. If there were an Open class older guys who may be undesireable to the factories can still earn a living and ride the wave out. Now with so many fast guys out there we are seeing a lot of talent being turned away from any given national, add an extra class, dont treat it like a side show and run it with the rest of the program on Sunday.

Hopefully DMG makes it easier on guys (like myself) trying to get a Pro license. I spoke with Ryan Holliday and he said they made the requirements too hard and some strings will be loosened due to the fact that they aren't having the turnouts they used to. The limited points races make it hard for the little guy to obtain a license.

I would be all for adding another class to see on Sunday. Since the timed qualifing came into play, the spectator gets less racing to watch. A vet pro race that might draw out retired or semi-retired pros like Larry Ward, John Dowd, Carsten, Albertyn, Larocco, etc or some fast local guys like Kevin Walker.

How many premier riders are out there? Can you fill the starting gate? If you count on all the riders on the line there are more Privateers than Premier riders there. Would you be happy with a 10 or 12 racers on the line?

I don't know how many tracks already do this but I like having am racing the same weekend as pro like at red bud. but i think they could push the pro motos back a few hours on sunday to free up more time saturday for am racing on the national track. This would also be a good time to have a support class or something like you guys were talking about. A pro-sport/money class on saturday would give the privateer guys more track time and a chance to win a few more bucks while they are already there for the weekend. That and it would draw out alot more local am racers to ride the national track the day before the big show. and $70 bucks to camp saturday night was a little steep RED BUD! not everyone can make it out wed. - sunday to get their moneys worth.

AMA (and riders) did not like amateur racing on Saturday because it destroyed the track for race day and they couldn't get it back to pristine condition by Sunday morning

Sat pros, Sunday ams, trailer restrooms, merchandise trailers, don't wanna touch the entry fee issue.

3 classes
25 rider gates all riders getting points.
Cuts down on lappers, huge feild gaps, easier for fans to follow and would boost purse money up some. Using the same purse for 50 riders instead of 80.

The MX 3 class be geared towards riders outside the top 30 or just coming up from ams. I don't have all the answers or how to clarify advancement between classes but this format would work better. Also tighten adavancement on MX2 that way MX 1 is obviously the premier class. The amount of household names and support goes deeper in the MX2 class and it shouldn't be like that. MX 3 could be a 30+2 between motos on sunday, paying advancement points and purse back to the top 10 or so. That would still be using the same purse for 60 riders instead of 80. 250f's for MX2 & MX3.

Splitting the pits into 3 groups of 25 would tighten the racing up in each class and cut down on clutter & carnage in the motos.

And qualifiers, i'd much rather get beat straight up than load up and go home over .10 of a second.
7/14/2008 7:07am
Food vendors that sell something that ISN'T deep-fried, covered in grease, and/or generally terrible for you would help. I dunno if any of the rounds bother getting, like, a sandwich shop to set up a stand, but I can't live off burgers, pizza, cheese fries and funnel cake. I think the best thing they had at Budds was a local BBQ place bringing in some pulled pork and chicken, which was good, at least.

More bathrooms. I don't even care if they're just decently-clean porta-johns instead of those trailer bathrooms (although the trailers are by far much nicer), but I don't like having to walk for 20 minutes to get someplace I can pee. Also, I dunno if this occurs at every round, but the bathroom attendants begging for tips bugs the hell out of me. I don't need some lady shouting "Remember, tips are appreciated" while I'm sitting on a toilet, and I really don't need her to squirt liquid soap for me and turn on the faucet when I go to wash my hands. Of course I doubt the promoters have any control over these people but it just got really annoying and I wanted to complain. :D

Create a "beer pit" of some kind so the drunks stay relatively fenced in. Banning alcohol would be lame, grown adults can do what they please, but I don't really like having beer spilled on me at 1:30 in the afternoon because someone is already stumbling around dropping their crap on people in the crowd. Alternatively, create "family sections" where people can sit and not bring alcohol, but don't put either one in some tiny area in full sun with a terrible view, which will just prompt people to ignore the sectioning altogether.

As has been mentioned, rider merchandise. I want to buy crap but not the same crap over and over again. Four t-shirts each with RV, JS, RC, Tedesco, and one other dude I forget just because I spent virtually no time looking at the shirts does not make a rider merchandise trailer.

Nighttime entertainment, especially if you want to discourage a little of the drunken partying. (You know what they say about idle hands...) Toyota showing a TGO film and Sixty Years And A Day after the night SX at Budds was cool. Not a lot of folks came out to watch but I was glad to have an alternative to seeking out a party.

I don't care if racing's on Saturday or Sunday but keeping all the pro races on one day is better, IMO. I think a lot of spectators just come in for the day instead of camping out or getting hotels. It's already expensive enough for folks to come without forcing them to come multiple days if they don't want to.

The idea of a third class is pretty good too, although I'm not sure how well it'd fit with my desire to have all the racing on a single day, especially if they want a live or same-day-coverage TV deal. I don't really know much about that and I'm not gonna pretend to.

Shoujo, at many GP's, you pay to use a public toilet at the races (and away from tracks), it's a common practice, typically about .20 Euro
BUT, in exchange, the bathrooms are typically immaculate....spotless....even at GP's

I don't know about you, but I'm cool with .25 to pee or poop in a clean bathroom, especially for my wife or girls

So, if the attendant is keeping it clean, go for the tip
7/14/2008 7:34am
If the bathrooms WERE spotless, I would have tipped the attendants... I'm mostly complaining about them constantly begging for money. :x But since there usually wasn't toilet paper, at least one of the trailers smelled like a barn all weekend, and at one point there was a dirty diaper sitting in one of the sinks that was still there 3 hours later when I returned... Yeah, no.
