After going through the training wheels thing with my older kids, the push bike is the way to go.
I actually got a really good deal through a local shop. Overall the bike is just so much better quality wise and I liked where the foot placement is on this one vs. some of the others. Thanks for the tip on letting the air out to slow him down. We will be on flat land for a while.

Giant makes a pretty good one too but I liked the Specialized the best.

If I had a little one again, that would be the bike for him. That is so cool.

My kid learned to ride a pw50 before he learned to ride a bicycle, he was 4 years old.

Here's the Haro. It's a smaller bike but has a huge seat on it.

What I did not realize is this bike had suspension which enabled him to do that stuff. It is called the jumper. That is a cool bike. All the other non suspension pedal-less bikes pale by comparison, the front brake is a good idea too.

I saw the prices on those things and choked...why so damned much?
I bought a little old bike for $5 at a yard sale and pulled out the pedals. Works perfectly.
Can't embed the image because I didn't purchase it but I can't find any others of my son on his. This is from a race at Tomahawk MX where his sister was racing. He pushed that thing all over the pits for two days.

Best thing you can get a kid IMO. Ours took to it right away, never used training wheels & was riding a regular bike at a little past 2 yrs. He's 3 1/2 now & still rides it all the time in the house.

Since everyone else is sharing... Here is my youngest at my friends kid's birthday party, he is the last one in the grey jacket. This was back in Dec 2010, I think he was about 18 months at the time. Not sure what happened with this one, I have two sensible kids and this one that thinks he is going to be the next nitro circus star and is giving me grey hair. Haven't made any trips to the ER recently though, wish me luck...

Cool video man. We are at 17 months right now but I think we are a little ways away from him being that good. He is just starting out so we will see.

Diamond Back and Specialized are the way to go if you want to get your child a push bike. (I drilled a hole and inserted a BMX axle then bolted up some plastic pegs, also added bolt up V Brake mounts and Avid brake handle) When he/she is ready to start pedaling Cult's 12 inch bike is the way to go. (I am waiting on an S&M flat land stem that shortens the reach) For now I pulled the bars back.

everyone loves their monkey, right? here's my story. bought my son a 12" pedal bike with training wheels for christmas when he was 1yr 9 months. he rode that for three months until his second birthday when I bought him a PW50. I was taking the training wheels off of the 12" to install on the PW and that is the day he learned to ride both with no training wheels. He never really took off with motocross even though he has had 4 or 5 bikes but here is where he is at today with BMX 16 years later. enjoy!

Hey where did you get those v brake mounts?

I have a Specialized hot rock 16" for my son I'd look to run something similar on. The old post mount caliper style brakes suck in comparison.

Thanks

Call them up and ask to order clamp on v brake bosses for a push bike.
I bought the Avid speed dial 7 lever and single digit 5 brakes. (look on line to try and find last years line to save you some $) Couple little things I figured out as I was setting this system up was that the v brake arms stuck out just enough to catch my sons shoes. I ended up taking the washers on brake shoes out to bring arms in closer and also picked up a smaller noodle and bent it in a tad. The brake lever has a modulation dial on that makes it easier for my son to squeeze the lever with his middle finger and lock his wheel up.
Hope this helps.

My wee girl Ruby, started on her Hotwalk at 2, and was balancing by the end of last summer.

This April I got her a Hotrock for her 3rd birthday, she took off without training wheels that day and hasnt looked back. She's just mastered feet up skids with her coaster brake which tickles me no end and gives my wife fits.

Ruby's hell bent set wanting a 50 but i'm thinking i'd sooner keep her under pedal power.

Out of interest, anybody know whats the lightest full face youth helmet on the market?

Airoh helmets are the lightest helmet. (900 grams) For the Junior This helmet my son is wearing is a MX helmet and lighter then most full face mountain bike helmets. Most MX helmets try to sell you on having "massive vents" when they are no bigger then a pencil eraser. Airoh has the largest vents on top of the helmet. They even come with a clear cover for winter use and different. Also included are attachments for visor and extension for the nose bridge to help seal the gap between google and helmet. Different plugs for mouth piece.
Also, little to no helmet bobbing when he rides.
