Looks like in the first moto he pushed himself too fast in the beginning and fell off the pace. Was looking for him to pass barcia at least a few times in the first moto and then all of sudden he was outta of the tv screen!!! It's early in the season but would love to see Tomac take the series in the outdoors he has the speed.......

No. He sits at home on the couch watching Judge Judy, with a half-gallon of ice cream on one side, and a large bowls of Cheetos on the other...and that's when he's not chain smoking or binge drinking.

Oh, wait...you said Eli Tomac? Sorry, for a second there I had him confused with some Vital MX posters. Particularly ones from Corning, CA.

Yes, Eli's in shape.

I'm sure he is in tip top shape, but I wouldn't doubt if he was is a bit spooked of Freestone.

Hey now- I don't smoke.... Nasty habit.

But otherwise I was getting a little nervous reading that description thinking maybe I left the webcam on and somehow you were watching me...

The season just began.
Eli did awesome at Hangtown and put on a hell of ride that second moto to salvage 10th from the first turn crash.

Wy would he be spooked by Freestone when he trained at Shorty's place all last summer which is about an hour or so south of Freestone with the exact same weather? If anything, I would think he would be prepared for Freestone mentally.

For me personally, i just don't do well after too long in the heat anymore. I know I'm no pro athlete, but sometimes pushing yourself in the heat results in hitting a wall no matter how good of shape a person is in.

I believe he has gotten fried at both the hottest round in 2010 and 2011 and his results suffered from that point in the season forward. If he has been training at Shorty's I would expect a different outcome this year, however it has been a weak point of his in the past.

It's not the heat or humidity that bothers me, it's the sun that wears me down. It always has, even when I played sports in college and in HS, the sun was just brutal for me (and now I live in AZ....go figure). Heat and humidity being present, but playing at night or in the evening, I was fine. During the day, sunny and even 85 degrees with moderate humidity will roast me. Must be my Irish/German heritage coming out. It could be that all the training in the world won't get Eli used to that climate, it could be simple genetics.

Eli rides fine and has great stamina for SX, even in warmer climates like Vegas in May - but it's a night event. Outdoors, (2) 30+2 motos, warm climates, SUN, heat humidity, it all adds up and takes a toll.

Not to go totally off topic, but there are posts on Vital from time to time about helmets. the #1 difference maker in the helmet (assuming they are all DOT approved) for me is how the helmet vents and has air flow. A DOT helmet is a DOT rated helmet, regardless of brand. But safety features (like Shoei has), venting, quality of foam, and yes graphics, etc make the difference in my opinion. I have some older HJC and Fox helmets that functionally are fine, but damn they are hot inside. When riding in the AZ summer desert heat, proper venting can be the difference between making it back to the staging area safely and not making it back.

You can bet his conditioning is in order, It may be possible that he's nursing a physical issue. There were some rumours floating around and some talk of an injury swept under the rug the week before the opener.

Tomac (John) knows a little tiny bit about training. I would predict that Tomac (Eli) will get stronger and "peak" towards the end of the season. I would also predict Tomac (Eli) to get better with age in terms of fitness. Everyone (other than vital members) knows that endurance athletes prime is around 30 years old.

I agree. I think he will take the Dungey approach. Don't start panicing until it's time. He has to figure out his starts too. Hopefully Shorty can wear off on him some with regards to starts.

Unless you train in that day in and day out, its the same for everyone. Like every other track they ride and race on.

Why be scared? Don't understand that assumption.

Because fools start threads like this to begin with.

How is his fitness, just ask everyone in his wake! Twice, once for each moto!
