My apologies to Keith, Bob Oliver and the boys, but one need look no further than tonight's qualifying results to see the irrefutable evidence that the 450 Yamaha is just not right.
Gavin Faith put together by far his weakest qualifying effort of the year tonight on the JGR Yamaha, qualifying 28th fastest; his worst performance this season and a whopping 10 places behind his average qualifying position of 17.88 in the eight races prior, astride a Honda.
I know all the rationalizing arguments, "He's not used to the bike", "Davi seems to go fast on it", "It was good enough for Stewart to win twice on it". I'm not going to waste energy countering those plausibilities...(Fuck yeah, I made up a new word!)
I say Yamaha should stick a fork in that pig, chalk it up to a bad design and go back to the drawing board! Don't expect the resources and hard work already expended by Joe Gibbs Racing to balance out a lack of due diligence by the Factory...
This isn't computers and the riders aren't beta testers...these are riders who put their lives on the line and JGR put their reputation on the line as well. They deserve better than this...

Just because Stewart isn't riding the bike well doesn't mean the bike sucks. Reed couldn't ride a KAWI that the other guys were killing it on.

lets clarify, if you're a small dude like stewart...yeah its not good. ifyou're a big dude like davi...it's not so bad.
Villipoto was doing pretty good on it but he has been superhuman on the 12 machine.
Reed couldn't ride the old KAWI but plenty of other guys were doing fine. Just because a rider and bike don't gel doesn't mean the rider or bike suck. It means the combo is no good.
not when you are talking utter bollocks.
I was killing it in 1978 on Hondas and got a deal for 79 with Yamaha that was as good as it gets, other than works bikes. I had unlimited bikes and parts from the factory in a deal struck by Gary Harlow and Kenny Clark and I thought I had finally caught the break I needed. One small problem: I could not ride those 250Fs fast to save my ass! I went from feeling invincible when I pulled up to the track to questioning everything on the bike and changing shit constantly. By the time the Nats and SX series started I was no better off than months before. My results sucked and at the Pontiac Supercross I asked Gunnar Lindstrom if there was any way I could get some help from Honda and he agreed to help me out with a bike and some good parts, backdoor style. (No, don't even go there with the wiseass remarks, you know what I mean.)
Me and my mechanic, Tim Buck, packed up the Yamahas and all the parts and drove straight to California to Yamaha International and dropped it all in Ed Scheidler's lap, apologizing and truly sad to give up. Got back on Hondas and my results improved immediately. I know it doesn't mean jackshit 33 yrs later, but what is relevant is that once you get it in your head that a bike sucks and you can't ride it, you are fucked...and yer really fucked if the bike actually DOES suck, which the Yamahas did in 79 and do now!

.... all good.
You mustve missed the part where Bauer said he was on a production bike.
Really a 1979 250F?
Or, a combo of both that elicits creative vernacular world wide?
Post a reply to: Empirical evidence that the Yamaha blows...sorry, Keith!
