Because the retail cost of a professional level bike is, at a minimum, $20,000, if not more, especially when you account for suspension tuning hours, rebuild, testing, etc... They are racing professionally, which means money is involved, which means various product manufacturers have something to gain by having a professional rider represent their equipment. Professional motocross racers can get all the equipment they need for a fraction of the cost or for free, as a representative of the various brands, unlike the "average joe" who's done nothing to prove they are worth the investment. A professional athlete is entitled to sponsorship and material support, especially someone that has won races and championships.
I have to argue with your point here. Not to get too far off topic but I race in the local vet novice class which means i am an absolute zero. The GM of my local dealership every year gives me 2 new sets of gear, 2 sets of complete graphics kits with pre-printed back grounds, and cost minus 15% on all of my parts. Why? Because I am at the races every weekend talking to and hanging out with everyone, because I give them a short video edit for their store tv's and website from each round and I'm constantly bringing guys to them for bikes and gear. In other words, i promote the shit out of them because i apreciate the help they give me. Im proof that you can suck on a dirt bike and still offer a good roi on the dealerships support. The GM has been at this store for 25 plus years. He used to give bikes to the local pros including one guy who made it to the factory level later in his career. He told me point blank, those guys expect it and gave nothing back. He's happier today giving it to guys like me.

I don't know if he is even going to be at Hangtown.....but it would be cool to see him there. I know I would root for him.....even though he comes off as kind of a douche'.
Grinning I like you Jeffro but come on...

He finished 17th in the first moto and 30th in the second at Glen Helen.

Some people said he would finish INSIDE the top ten before the GP, so taking into account the significantly higher standard of racing in the AMA Nationals, he would do well to finish dead last in both motos at Hangtown.

It is comical to me how the "big" pro's need a bike on top of all the experience and incredible fitness, yet there are local pro's all the time making main's in supercross and top 20's at national's on bikes with 2-3k motor's and a descent suspension company's thousand dollar suspension's. I seriously doubt the bike will hold him back much.

Anyone remember the magazine ads for laps led at the nationals when Carmichael was killing everyone? Was it Fox? Out of about 360 laps in the season RC had led 345 or so(??). No one else led more than just a couple laps except for one old retired schmuck riding out of the back of a clapped out dilapidated mini truck. Henry led 8. Yessir, Doug Henry IS a certified badass.

Now about Ryno and the fact that he is pushing 40. Dowd did quite well at 40. I also remember Dubach near 40 doing pretty well in the kids class back around 2001 or so. If Hughes shows up and puts in an effort, that will be cool. If Hughes makes it to the gate for moto 2 and there are empty gates on the line that will be even more cool. The fact that these guys whole lives revolve around moto and they don't have a good bike puzzles me.

He finished inside the top 10 in his Saturday qualifier. During the actual GP he crashed in both motos after bad starts.

My point was really about bikes and the related components needed to build a worthy race bike. No local dealership is going to give a vet novice a bike to race. There's a myriad of ways dealerships and equipment manufacturers can get their products and services seen and to establish loyalty - just like you've experienced. That's cool your dealership does that.

Ryan Hughes has significant name recognition. For him to be at a national would be beneficial for any sponsor. Whether he is even racing and can get a bike to use is totally up in the air. I'd love to see him out there.

Hughes has been riding Glen Helen for what, around 25/30 years? Prior the qualifying race the foreign riders (most of whom had never been to GH before) had just 30 minutes of free practice. But more to the point, Qualifying races are not usually raced at quite the same intensity as the actual GP Moto's which count. I think you know this though...

All the more reason to have a 3rd class at the nationals , whether it be 2 or 4 stroke. Up and comers and situations such as this , lap times will prove who belongs in the big show.

Damn.....I guess I was way off on that one. Thought for sure he had pulled a 7th. Anyways.....you can't blame me , I always try and root for the "Vet" guys when they show up. I scream for KW every time I see him out there.

BTW jamma.....I was in no way even trying to start a GP vs USA MX thing here. My point was that if Ryno pulled a 7th at the GH GP ( which he didn't I guess ).....was that I think he could have busted into the top 10 at Hang town. I don't like getting in the middle of the "us vs them" shit. There are fast riders on both sides of the pond.......I'm an American who appreciates both series.

Ive seen ryno ride a lot. DITD, USGP, Mammoth... The dude is still super fast.

I think he can run top 20 if he doesn't put it on the ground. top 15 is totally possible if...he doesn't end up on the ground.
Im not a huge fan of his antics but I can say the dude is heavily devoted to what he does.

No kiddin' man! It seems like any kind of a discussion like this always veers towards that way. It gets old real quick.

That is a fair question. First national of the year everyone is tied with zero points so everyone has a clean start so the field might be too deep for him to even make the gate.

No reason to hate on the guy, he's passionate about the sport we all love.
The sport has provided him a comfortable living for him and his family.

Good to see an "old-timer" giving back in spades.

Good on you Ryno!

Are you sure about the "comfortable living " or are you just assuming ?
