I thought this was obvious enough without stating it, but apparently the RV fans have their blinders on tonight.
I am a huge RV fan, but I want a title fight down to the wire.
Not a six race cruise to the title.
This year it’s been a war of attrition. The rider who survives healthy wins. I guess it’s always been that way, but this year seems far worse. No question Villopoto is the fastest and most consistent guy and has been all season though. No matter if his competitors are dropping like flies or not.
Villipodium is clearly at another level, like the past champions before him. Riders are being injured trying to run his pace. While I hate to see injuries, I'm also not a fan of winners with 20+ second leads.
Ryan currently has a 54-point lead. But that's over a currently inactive Ryan Dungey, so his closest active pursuer (at least we expect he'll be at the next race) is James Stewart who's 69 points back. If he doesn't make it to Toronto, then the closest active guy would be Davi Millsaps, at -95. That's nearly a four race lead. So then you'd be looking at a race or two before he wraps it up, not six races.
The reason I remember the 2003 season so well, was I vividly remember Reed taking out RC right before the finish at the SLCSX. Heated words exchanged at the podium and RC still simmering at the press conference.
Sorry, just took a little trip down memory lane.
Pit Row
We created a sport (riders are a part of this) that combines the best athletic ability, race intelligence, and the most trecherous conditions, which is the way we like it. Naturally, and unfortunately, this comes with exposure to injury. Survival has become (and actually has been that way for a long time) key to winning championships.
No, I don't want to see anybody hurt. Heck, I'm racing a local series this year, there's a race on my 50th birthday in October, nothing more I'd like to ride it, but I understand there's a chance I might be sitting out with injury. Won't stop me from riding the series, though.
Would you rather cut back the tracks or bikes to make it safer? That's the only realistic option. Better cut out the whoops. People get hurt in those. Better cut out rhythm sections. Doubles and Triples are a no-no. Guess what...we just created Nascar.
Yeah, I'd love to see everyone healthy and a four way rider decider at Las Vegas. Reality is that isn't likely to happen. And no, I'm not an RV fan. I'm a fan of the guy who puts together the package to win the championship. He, whoever that is, has made the season worth watching.
Oh, and one slip up from Villo and this season could turn around. Ya' never know.
