The pro number. I understand nobody running number 4 for obvious reasons of 4 being Carmichael's number but why does nobody choose for their number or career number or whatever.

Because Satan will get them if they do. Three number plates, three six's, one happy goat dude with horns.

Single digit numbers are reserved for national champions.

Dungey chose 5, canard chose 41 and wilson chose 15. Those are the 3 most recent guys that could have taken it but chose others instead

Who was the last person to run that number. Wasn't it Steve Lamson?

Yes, this was from '07 when he pulled out retro gear and qualified for Hangtown on a CR125. Since he retired no one has picked it up again.

If memory serves correctly, he didnt qualify, he was 41st, but former champions were reserved a spot on the line

because the new champs that have that option to pic a single digit number are chicken shit.well, canarad took 41 to honor his dad in some way, so he can slide by , but wilson was scared to change from his 15 number. something about superstition/lucky number Sad Blink
nothing wrong with taking any of those numbers offered . even number 4. riders got to move on from the past number user.

he was scared to change his number......the unknown......foolish ways of thinking if you ask me."have been lucky with the 15 so i am keeping the number".
these pros if thought ahead, would of gone single digit when they had the chance.more exposure with a single digit when your prime years deplete. more noticeable .better marketing longevity.better chance as a fill in pick, more of a stand out under a factory or sub factory tent.

I don't see what makes him scared? Is that an actual quote or something you just said? I don't think it's the rider being scared, it's just liking the number they have. I know if given the opportunity to have a permanent number I would take 24 because that's the number I like. It was my dad's back when he raced and I wanted to be like my dad. Who says 15 doesn't have some significance to Dean?

The ignorance of some people on here blows me away. "He won't change his number so he's skurred"

Lamson was dead last into the first turn on that Cr125. I was so depressed.

he said it was a lucky number.
i commented in my own way, that if you are superstitious, your scared and believe in some crazy voo doo type outcomes.or think that a number that has been "lucky" will give you good fortune.

nothing wrong with taking any of those numbers offered . even number 4. riders got to move on from the past number user.
So we need to move on from permanent numbers.... Makes no sense... The whole NASCAR numbering is a joke

Dean has said that he didn't change his number because he is waiting on Brown to lose number 3 so he can run it.

3 is his real goal, not some superstition.

Mike Brown still has "3", right?
Yes, but I don't think he plans on keeping it any longer.

he did say when asked if what number he was going to pick. commented about the 15 has given him good luck.so he had no intention of going single digit. it was a youtube video he mentioned this.

from an old racerx ............
*You sticking with the number 15 or taking a single digit?
I’m sticking with the 15. I’ve obviously had pretty good luck with it. I actually wanted to stick with the 108 this year, but they didn’t let me, and they kept asking me to take the 15. I didn’t want to at first, but now it’s been good to me and I’m going to stick with it.*

Some of you guys read to much into numbers. Nascar has it right. How would football look if they changed numbers every year based on stats? I don't get what last years results has to do with the current years numbers. Who cares about how good someone was last year? How may riders market themselves with their numbers? Twitter, Facebook, and other social media websites are the future, numbers other than one through ten mean something to some riders. Could be dads old number like in -anards case, could be a number they had when the got their first bike, could be other favorite pro athlete, tons of reasons to choose a number. Roczen isn't liking his number to much right now.

Definitely not trying to argue - just having a conversation, but the interview I read was a Mike Brown interview and he said that Dean told him that he really wants his number 3. Mike said it was't that important to him anymore and he would probably not try to keep his number any longer so Dean could run it. But of course that is from Mike and not Dean. Either Dirt Bike or Dirt Rider had the interview.

using football doesnt work. There is no clear cut highest ranking like their is in racing.

But...? I though RC was the goat, and he's number 4. Damn, I'm confused.

Old school numbering system was the best! Riders had to EARN that low number, season after season. I always thought of that low number as a badge of honour for the riders. Nascar can keep their numbering system, it sucks! Permanent numbers only benefit a few atheletes, the rest get screwed. my $0.02

I believe you're correct. There was a recent RacerX story on Brownie, not sure if that's were it came from
