One of the main functions of mouth guards is concussion prevention. They have to be a dual density type. The studies were done in Australian rules football. The uniform is cup and mouth guard.

It keeps the head of the Lower jaw from pressing on the top of the joint area. In a traumatic incident the forces can compress the base of the skull and squeeze the mid-brain more or less. Troy Aikman was at UCLA and was required to wear a mouth guard during the studies, no concussion. After turning Pro he quit wearing them.

I wear a mouthgaurd now.

Took a handlebar to the chin after nosing into the face of a big double. Broke my helmet, my jaw in 3 places, smashed a molar to oblivion (in half), and a few other minor cracked teeth. I just picked up my bike, finished the race, and headed to the hospital.

Good times. Best part? The helmet belonged to my buddy at the time. I didn't realize I forgot mine until I got to his house!

Since then I wear them with a lot of sports - football, hockey, etc.

I wear a mouth guard because all my friends who've been riding for years have massively fucked up teeth and I'd really rather not. Grinning

Very little use for a cup though.

I landed real hard a few years back and my teeth came together. Didn't crack anything but it felt like I got a mild concussion. I wore one for a few weeks after that but ditched it because couldn't get used to it. I may look into some other mouthpieces.

Any sports store will have them, I wear the clear plastic ones like they use for football, hockey, etc.

Pretty much any sports store, just pick up a football/hockey one. They make tons of kinds, so get a few (they're pretty cheap) and see which one you like best.

Take the time to form it to your mouth like they tell you to.

The best kind are the vacuum formed to an impression of you mouth. It is called a dual density. You have to have a dentist make it. If you can't do that find one that is thick and is a boil and bite. I used to have one as a kid that was great. Now the ones that I see are crap. They don't allow you to open your mouth without it falling off.
