"As you would expect, Glover and the Dunlop crew aren’t happy because Stewart’s tire was a works tire, which is the official property of Dunlop, and since JGR is not sponsored by the brand, they’re not supposed to have access to that tire. How did Stewart get the tire? Most probably, it was one he had from 2011."
I suppose the engineers had access to it for a while but Dunlop/Bridgestone did not know they had a "works" tire until A-1. I think it sucks for Dunlop because they have a lot of time and money tied up in their "works" tire...but they should have had control of their tire at all times if they didn't want it to land in the wrong hands. I'm sure it's embarasing for whomever issued the tire to James in the first place.

because every rider carries a year old tire with them everywhere they go
As long as he isnt racing with it he can gauge what the other tires are doing at different times in the day compared to what he will race with. Then they can go back and improve their tires.
They cant change them that day but it gives them some really good info and knowledge for the long term.
Talk about kicking a dead dog...
Hey this sport is supposed to be entertaining, and this mini-scandal does it for me!
All I know is that we talked for about 30 minutes and he obviously wanted to vent. He also mentioned Matthes by name and made a comment to the effect of, "Let's see how Matthes spins this on Monday", which I took to mean that Matthes has been a proponent of Pirelli tires, or maybe he and Broc head-butted in the past? I dunno, but I do know that he wasn't happy about it and that it had really made it a long day for him. He also mentioned a letter that he'd written to JGR stating something to the effect of, "Sorry we weren't able to work together for 2012, but perhaps we can revisit the idea at a later date".
And yes, the tire companies do take this very seriously, and they should. Also, he said the works tire that they ran was a 722 or something like that and pretty much all the factories running Dunlops have them. I told him Dunlop should run an ad like FMF did when the logos were taken off RV's bike last year..."The Naked Truth"...LOL. He actually liked the idea and was asking me about the details of the ads...
Also, did your average weekend motocrosser know that the top guys were running special tires that he can't get? Well he knows now!
I'm sure they are going to blow it up on the Speed broadcast this weekend, so I can't see James wanting to switching tires again. So I would imagine that JS7 found a Pirelli tire this week while testing in California to his liking. Now what will happen if he starts winning races soon? Everybody is going to know he was using Pirellis.
Could be good for Pirelli in the long run.
So everyone is at fault, because no one wants to admit their culpability. Somehow a works Dunlop went missing, somehow it had the logo razor'd off, somehow it got mounted on a JGR wheel, somehow that wheel was put on Stewart's bike, somehow Broc found out about it, somehow Matthes heard about it... juicy stuff. (even though like I said, in the grand scheme of things, WGAF?)
Let's go back to the beginning: when these tire mfgs hand out the good stuff, don't they track serial numbers? I mean, if they really take this stuff seriously, there's gotta be some type of inventory control process in place, right? So they know who got what when. That seems pretty basic.
But it seems that the storyline is going to stick with the "leftover tire" scenario: Stewart simply has a bunch of spares leftover from the L&M/San Manuel days, and Coy and JBone are cool with recycling them as they see fit. Right. I have trouble buying that.
Whatever. It's over. Time to phocus on Phoenix and the next turn of the wrench!

We were teammates at DG when we were kids (15 & 17), his dad did the forks on one of my CR125s, Broc went bigtime and changed a bit, but I'd see him at the races. Fast forward to mid-90s and I got back into the sport doing some writing and Internet terrorizing and I'd run into him at the races all the time, but now he's a different guy because he's on the down slope of the humility bell curve. I've always liked Broc and we're good friends, He's helped out with WWR and I've helped him out with his cause or two. He's a good guy with a big heart, kinda like me. The last time I spoke with him before he called Sat night was when I called him for some tires for my XR100s.
I know, much more info than you deserve, but now you know how the world works...it's a quid pro quo society, son. You're welcome.
Oh, and one more thing: If you had Broc's number, you'd keep it for at least 38 years, who the fuck are you trying to kid?
"Broc did not give them the tire, it was one that they had already"
