Anyone who expected him to come in and dominate was either in denial of last year or a complete idiot. As a Reed and Dungey fan, I knew coming into this season that Villopoto was a step ahead of everyone. As it turns out, I was wrong. He's 3 steps ahead of everyone.

I might be the only one that was actually impressed with Stewart's ride Saturday. He accepted the fact that he was the 4th best guy that night and was ready to take 4th place and move on to Phoenix. Then, the two riders in front of him fell and he saw an opportunity to basically steal 4 points so he went for it. He crashed in the process, losing 3 points. However, a Stewart that accepts the fact that he's 4th or 5th best on a night is more dangerous than a Stewart who gets 1st one week and 10th the next.

I'm not much of a MA800 fan, but he at least had the heart and dedication to travel over seas to get a few races in and try to work out the kinks of a new bike/team.

IMO, James's focus is on getting paid first and riding second. I don't think he deserves another dollar until he produces. I've liked the kid since he turned pro, but all the little things just kill me... Drop the mic, bubbas world, impersonating a cop, L&M/LB sucks, etc, etc..

He absolutely has the talent to win on any given Saturday, but the days of him crushing everyone effortlessly are over.

IMO if he doesn't do well, this will be his next to last season..

I've already said it on here, but couldn't believe the boo's in the opening ceremonies. Don't know if Anaheim is a tough crowd, but that TV show and the L&M years don't seem to have helped his popularity.

In 2002, almost everyone booed Carmichael. Stewart isn't even close to what Carmichael went through, and Stewart has done way more to earn boos in my opinion. The crowd has always been more lenient on Stewart than others for some reason.

Reality's just tough for some to see sometimes. A lesson to all kids. While sitting on the couch during the off season may lengthen careers. Your competition is quickly running you down, no matter how good you are.

Stewart hasn't won a supercross championship since 2009 when he barely beat Chad Reed, which was 3 years ago. He has a total of 2 championships in in 7 years in the supercross class. He won 1 championship in 2007 before he went "supercross only", when Carmichael rode a partial season in his farewell tour.

He hasn't won (or even ridden) an outdoor championship since 2008, which is 4 years. He has a total of 1 championship in 7 years in the 450 class. He won his only outdoor 450 championship before he went "supercross only."

In my opinion, Stewart has paid a terrible price for his decision to race "supercross only". You apparently cannot stay competitive for very long when you don't race at all for 7 months out of the year.

But it was his decision, in all fairness. I wish it had been different.
another great post- the others have caught up (which is understandable given that they race all year round) - just look at reed these past few seasons when he's been racing outdoors aswel!!! he looks better than ever

Now the interesting thing will be if he can turn it around (which I hope he can) in the next few races.

He's got the talent for sure.

Yeah, I hear you man. I don't feel bad for him financially, but I sure do in terms of what could have been up to this point. Can you imagine what might have happened if:

1. He had stayed on the KX450

2. He had stayed with Alden Baker

3. He had ridden every outdoor season

4. He had stayed away from making TV shows until after his career was over.

Sure seems like a lot more records would be a lot closer.
EXACTLY!

What is drop the mic?
"Drop the mic", is what Stewart tweeted on Friday that he was set to do on Saturday. As he explained, it is what someone (usually a rapper) that just did something great does....Drop the Mic......as if saying top that bitches. He explained it to whoever he said it to in another Tweet. If you Youtube it, lot's of rappers talk about dropping the mic.

Which, I would cut Stewart some slack (some) if he hadn't been doing things like that. Can't have it both ways, either you are so happy with your setup and preparation that you KNOW you are going to smoke all, or you've been off from racing for 8 months and are worried about things. Could have come in quiet and gone about business without the bragging nonsense that didn't come close to panning out.

Not to mention the cheers when he went down. I always thought he was a favorite with the fans in the seats.

Who's fault is it that he hasn't raced? I think he's had plenty of opportunities to race and turned them all down. It seems he wants the spotlight and all that comes with it but doesn't wanna put in the necessary work in order to remain there. James Stewart needs to get over himself, as soon as he's done winning no one will give a fuck about him, FUEL TV included. If he's not gonna prepare himself to race, he'd better start preparing himself for life after the spotlight.

Why do you always worry about what us other guys are doing? James created this situation for himself on ALL counts. Don't forget, this guy was an overwhelming fan FAVORITE in his first few years. I absolutely dug the guy then and was rooting hard for him to come back and win the 125 crown the year he dominated after missing the first few rounds. This isn't fickle fans turning on a guy because he signed with Honda or wore a crown and sat on a throne in opening ceremonies (when MC is King).

This is years of James doing ill-advised things to turn people off. He is still doing them Friday before the race with his "Drop the Mic" b.s. People can't stand when anyone writes checks with their mouth that they can't cash. Ask Rex Ryan.

When James and his entourage learn to lose, then maybe he can start winning again.
1/10/2012 6:23am
Before you guys unload on Stewart too much. It's possible they told him and he actually listened that he didn't have to win A1. But use it aas a gauge to figure out where they were and what they still need to do. I can still see Stewart need to put on a show doing the fastest practice lap though. As far as the race goes maybe, just maybe someone got to him and he understands it's a series championship not the race that's important. After all I don't recall any of RC's championships including a win at A1.

I realize he hasn't raced since Vegas...but he is now a veteran of this sport. He has had plenty of off season to prepare and we have seen this done by guys that are coming back from long time off with injueries- RV last year A1 comes to mind- (The guys opening ceremony included vids from the prior years nasty surgery because he wanted everyone to know where he was coming from.

I was watching RC Emig etc on the post show and RC made a comment that I think makes a lot of sense- James has the speed and the experience-now settling for fourth was probably a smart decision but when an opportunity for second comes like that you have to as the veteran be able to capitalize on those if you want to be the champ and he couldn't-

I didn't expect him to win once RV hollied and checked out but a rider of his talent, caliber, experience and speed should be able to capitalize on CR and RD's mistake (regardless of a few months off)- as RC said

How do you think he feels about not being able to put Tedesco behind him? No disrespect to Ivan but he isn't usually in the conversation when discussing world-class speed.

Ivan has great speed at the start of a race. Remember the "chump" comment a few years back when he was holding Reed back while RC and JS were running away? When you have somebody who is fast enough and determined to keep you behind, not much good comes through trying to force the issue. I can understand JS being cautious around him since they have a history.
I think James did just fine, except for jumping on the hay bale part. Looks to me he could have gone by Ryan and Chad. He had the speed in a couple of sections to do so.

i'm pretty sure that Kawi wanted Villo and signed him with the intentions of letting James go.

wonder if they regret that decision.... i'm guessing not.

sometimes the fastest riders of yesteryear are no longer the top dogs. it's called progression. it happened to Johnson, Stanton, MC, RC. why it's such a big fucking deal that Stewart is getting surpassed is beyond me.

Stewart is still one of the fastest guys on the track. but NEWS FLASH, the other guys have caught up.

The difference is, people were booing RC because he was dethroning their sweet heart McGrath. Stewart has bought this on himself... Were people boing RC 5 years into his 250/450 career?

Did anyone notice how at the end of Chad's heat race win, during the interview he was calm and cool, and at the end of James' heat, he was sweating profusely and breathing heavily?

James looks the same as he did in last years' opener; riding tight and putting in inconsistent laps.

SX-only does not keep him game enough to beat RV over a championship season, period.

James got a bad start.

RV got a good start.

The track was not conducive to passing, was very technical, and did not favor all-out speed. Not a good situation when you have to make up time and positions.

Ryan rode a flawless race and looked great, but...

It is one race, and way too early to write James off.

I think it's a big deal for some because it's what they are used to, and learned to like or liked from the beginning. The doubt that now follows is not much liked by the brain who wants order. Fact in psychology and it's related to survival...

Carry on...

All true but the part about the passing. There were a lot of passes made on that track and several riders made charges from way back in the pack.

not having raced in 6 months and then expecting to come out balls to the walls and smoke everybody is wishful thinking i suppose.

practice and testing is nothing like racing a "real" organized event, even if it is just a local fairgrounds race like the Alessi's raced a couple of months ago.

maybe james will come to phoenix fully prepared and ready to run up front this saturday.

btw that yamaha didn't iook any better than the yamaha LB prepared for him.

Yep. I wonder if it is a frame stiffness issue like RV had with the 2011 KX450 that suspension cannot fix. Not an excuse, for RV when he did not see to be riding to his potential or James now, just a possibility.
