But it would be simple enough for us to under stand and not require a lot of maintenance ,

Sign me up.

I will subscribe to any site or magazine 2 stroke and travel to watch or participate in any 2 stroke MX event as well.

I would not be interested in reading about 3 or 4 wheelers of any kind. I would rather read about a 2 stroke street bike or shifter cart before anything 4 stroke, even MX bikes. I used to take every MX magazine offered. Now I take NONE. There is nothing in any of them I want to read. Heavy race bikes are not my hobby. “Heavy” and “race” are contradictory aren’t they?

I have no interest in any type of machinery that regresses to replace a proven, dependable, lightweight intake (reed cage) with 157 heavy, unnecessary, power robbing, spinning, clattering, friction and heat causing moving parts of which 67 need replaced once or twice per season. I don’t have time for all that, I just wanna ride.

I know several others who are with me on this one.

for free..id take it

honestly, i think if it were to be a succes it would have to be a quarterly magazine like 2600 (hacker mag) or make it bi-monthly at the least

you'd have to make it very READER orientated as in show casing readers all over the country, their home track, garage setup, bikes of course and yadayayda

I'd also focus on folks riding on a budget...I used to do it in highschool big time. Worked a summer job at a warehouse making $10 an hour and rode 2-3 times a week (granted i had no rent and didnt pay car insurance) i still managed to ride ALOT and save money!!

I'd buy it.

focus on updates, mods, lots of project bikes, dyno runs.

for fun compare weights, maint costs and horsepower to the modern 4 strokes

Short answer is no. Long answer involves questioning why go after a shrinking market? Whether you love 2S or not, the reality is you have less and less potential clients every year. So one would wonder if you have plans of eventually being profitable or just doing this because you love 2S? For sure there are hard core 2S lovers who will never change and maybe that's enough to support a magazine. Best of luck

The magazine business is tough, even for those who have many years of expertise.

I was probably one of the last MXER's to convert over to 4 strokes, keep racing my KX250 until 2008. I would never consider riding a two stroke again.

However, my 16 year old who has been racing a KX250f the last two seasons is totally obsessed with two strokes and shows me every Jimmy Decotis two stroke video and any other ones and wears me out about getting him a two stroke!

So there must be some big movement in the younger generation to want to torcher themselves by riding them!!!!!

The way the economy is now, it would be tough. I think material for the magazine would run out pretty fast if you focus strictly on 2 stroke dirt bikes.

If you're thinking along the lines of a Racerx, twmx or even motocross illustrated type magazine, then I would say no, it doesn't sound like a good idea.

One thing that COULD work in my opinion is if you tried to make a core 2-stroke 20-pager (bi)monthly for example. But it would have to be 2-stroke gold and would involve a lot of work and connections. You would have to do stuff that none of the other magazines is doing, let me give you a few examples.

-2-strike pipe shootouts
-bike tests obviously (yamaha, ktm, husqvarna, tm primarily as they are the only ones still updating their 2-strokes).
-Dyno runs, upgrade tests (jetting, porting, modding anything)
-Cover 2-stroke races and classes: the US has some and especially the UK and France are holding strong in this aspect.
-Trying to get scoops on future 2-stroke developments, possibly throug interviews. (EFI, Jap manufacturers bringing the 2-stroke back possibly)

If one would have the resources, time, connections and dedication, I would say confidently that this could work.
Do not bother with quarterly magazines or trying to do stuff that the established brands are doing because you would be done-gy in no time.

Although I am from Europe, if you would ever decide to persue something like this, I could help out. I have a degree in Journalism and am a 2-stroke diehard Smile .

I actually will disagree with 2 stroke guys here. I thought we were all wanting equality. Why not run full shootouts like we've been asking for? Amateur rules. I'd agree with the 4 stroke crowd on this, 2 stroke guys will only buy it for a short time, and then leave. You need to have what both sides want. Don't cut off your foot. These are just my opinions, but going for EVERYONE is the way to go, not just one side. A 125 shootout, a 250cc shootout and an Open class shootout. Then, you could still have ATV's and Karts etc. Maybe even compare a 250 2 stroke old quad to a current 250 4 stroke 4 wheeler, and one of those 500cc 4 wheelers to the current big bores etc. Running cc vs cc is the best way in my opinion to gain readers from both sides. They all race or ride amateur, but none of the magazines will put out a full shootout with like 15 bikes. That will get your readers.

If you plan to make money, no
If you're looking for a tax shelter loss for a couple years, go for it

Fact is, just look at market share. Forget about nostalgia or what people wish for, look at how many 2-strokes are sold compared to 4-strokes, that's your marketshare.
It's fractional

How do you think a magazine for pinball machines would do?
Sure, lots of people love pinball machines. Lots of people wish there were more pinball machines. Lots of people restore and/or play older model pinball machines and there's still a couple companies making pinball machines. There's even a Pinball Hall of Fame in Las Vegas
But how many pinball machines do you think you could sell a month?

A website makes far more sense and is far cheaper

I think MXA already beats that dead horse enough. There just aren't enough new models to make it viable.

Why bother. Unless it's gonna be a vintage mag.
You're gonna ride what Yamaha and Honda want's you to ride, and that's a 4 stroke.

Anyone is welcome to add to the list. That's 42 now including both XC and XCW models from KTM with a few motard bikes not listed. Plenty of 2 stroke options. Some are just easier to get ahold of than others.

Starting a new mag would be hard to get companys to lend u a bike to test . I would recommend staying Online and investing in twostrokemx.com. The site already has alot of traffic but needs quality articles and bike tests.

I have been motocross editor at a mag that is given away, it's a glossy mag, well done and even there we have problems selling ad space in print.

We've gone digital and it looks great but still hard to get advertisers now, very tough market.

I probably wouldnt buy it.

1) I havent raced a 2 stroke in around 8 years. You have got to think of who you will be writing to. The moto community is small enough...the 2 stroke fan segment of the market is even smaller.

2) Fans of the sport love to fallow the pro's and best riders of the sport. The pro's all ride 4 strokes when they race so this would be a problem.

You can add service Honda and gas gas. I'm not interested in making a profit and I would include older bikes. I am trying to find a 1996 or 1993 cr250 and a 1981 maico 490. I will test these bikes against modern two strokes. I might test them against 4 strokes eventually but not now.

nice idea for a mag, just be sure and include 4-strokes too and maybe some racing coverage.

Post a reply to: Would anyone be interested in a two stroke only magazine?
