I think we can all agree that we are in bad times in our economy. DC is doing the best he can to support the sport by getting as much exposure as possible. I believe that is what is the push for the better TV coverage. The sport is quickly moving from racer based to fan based. This is largely due to the economy and the change in political views on the environment.

I would love to see our sport gain the notoriety it had before. And lets get it straight, moto is and never will be mainstream, but dirt biking was and hopefully will be again. MXA talked about how they hoisted their own petard with the development of the fourstroke and the rule changes. I don't think that people are addressing the damage of the Japanese manufacturers refinement of the product. Many people on this site are core moto and demand progression, but that is partially what has destroyed this sport. The old adage applies: you can make it fast, reliable, or cheap. Look at what the tracks are like now and what level of ability it takes for both bike and rider. No wonder MOTO IS DODO.

The new bikes we have are amazing, but the additional cost for the progression and refinement of the Japanese manufactures has led to race bike quality and capacity and COST. It was mentioned in another thread that are cheaper. the only way that we can do that is to reduce one of aforementioned three areas. I know what my solution to saving our sport is and that is more riding areas and that will only come with increased DEMAND. But how are we going to increase demand? We need to bring back the low cost XRs and keep maintenance cheap for off road and race models so we can get back to 1 in 200 people owning an offroad motorcycle.

I agree with you, but the sport and industry is already out of control. TV coverage and fans at the races will always be there to see the show, but riders and sponsors will start disappearing. When that happens, the fans will disappear.

And right now there are only two brands of new 'reasonable entry level' MX bikes being sold. What level riders would show up to race this class? I'm willing to be they would be slower than the women, or at least the podium women.

There's nothing at all wrong with using the women as a marketing tool. That's like claiming that Kawasaki is using Villopoto to sell bikes. Ya think?

125s can only be revived if the amateur class structure gives them a viable home. Six races spread across the country isn't going to fix that. And I think there is definitely a need for them, because I wouldn't want my kid to go straight from a mini to a 250F either. The women aren't what is killing the 125s (actually women would be a pretty good market for them as well.)

And yes, I think that women are important to help grow the sport into the mainstream. I agree most girls are probably 2nd generation and have been around it because Dad does it. But it doesn't have to be that way and it isn't that way with the boys.

Ok first there are at LEAST four manufacturers of 125cc Motocrossers. Regarding their speed... I'll put my money that any sharp local intermediate would be able to top ten or better with out much issue in the WMX.

By marketing tool I don't mean to sell bikes. Women are not a market for MX bikes at least not 250f and up... MX Sports thinks they broaden the appeal of MX. Apparently not enough to put them on TV (unless it's a tightly edited results piece) but because they can add it to the marketing proposal to potential sponsors of the series. "see we have a womens class"... IMO they would be better off building a Danica Patrick out of someone like Vicky Golden instead of pulling the WMX collective skirt up to show they are not as a organization ready for the big show.

The 125 class does have National (and international) support. Schoolboy?? Hello... Most tracks out here still have a 125 class too.

Finally yes today most new riders are introduced to it. However MX was founded by people who found the sport on their own and that type of new rider still is around today. Boys/Men will find MX on their own, women almost always are introduced via Dads, brothers, boyfriends... I'd say for every 50 guys who "discover" MX on their own there MIGHT, MIGHT be 1 woman who does. Women are not the future to increasing rider/racer count.
What are the four manufacturers of 2012 two stroke 125s? Do tell! KTM, Yamaha (BNG 2006?), and... and.... oh please say GasGas or TM.

Schoolboy is a great class, but that's a pretty small demographic and obviously not enough to keep all of the manufacturers interested in developing bikes just for it. If your local tracks are big enough to have a dedicated 125 class, that's great news to hear and more power to them! But Schoolboy seems like the only real place for them in AMA events or LL, and that's what I mean by an amateur structure to promote them. I think this is also happening at such a bad time in the economy that there isn't much hope of them resurging without the rule book changing.

So the question is, do I want as a spectator to see some second teir guys or the fastest girls in the county? I also think it's a nice balance to the program to no only have Monster and Rockstar girls, but to have some girl racers out there kicking ass too. As DC said, it's a bonus event after all. By growing the sport, I don't think we're talking about just how many people start riding or racing. There's TV viewership, ad revenue, clothing and accessory sales, and of course media coverage.

Ok, I'm done, I think all of our opinions are pretty set.

I believe MX Sports under DC’s able hand has done work that is seldom
duplicated in sports promotion. Well done.

I’m going to speak to the CONCEPT of women in Pro MX. I don’t like it. Cheapening the life's work of some of the World’s top athletes by elevating a group of inferior competitors is wrong.

Qualify for the premier classes or stay out on National day.

As much as I admire the skill and determination of this generation of mx warriors, I despise your politically correct need to put your women in battle.

Here’s a podium for ya....

Sir, if we have practice, qualifiers and racing all day - as we should, there is no " HALF TIME SHOW".

If you read my FIVE YEAR PLAN, I have all the answers, including the integration of women into

the program. You can determine if they, for you - are the right answers. Cheers.

Typically that means that they have all the answers to suit their agenda. Wink
Steve-O, as i stipulated to the gentleman above, my contention is that I DO have all the answers, whether they are the

RIGHT ANSWERS for him, you - or American Motocross, is left to be decided by the individuals and the sport itself.,

Since it has only been me and my esteemed (yet lowly paid) staff at THE AMERICAN INSTITUTE FOR ADVANCED

MOTOCROSS STUDIES that has come up with a genuine, sincere and well- thought -out PLAN for our sport, I consider

my bad self a visionary and, a progressive thinker. To be fair, a progressive thinker that still listens to The Zeppelin

Wow, who knew the simple, continued inclusion of a bonus class to the series for a group of athletes that has long been under-represented would turn into a burn(1986)-MX-Sports-at-the-stake thread, with WORCSRacer joining in to tell us what a bad job we're doing for the future of the sport? Oh wait, I guess all these threads do....

You guys do have "avenues for suggestions" right here, and both of you have my email address and my phone number, and so does Rupert and everyone else.... And yes, the women are "being used as a marketing tool by MX Sports," just as we are using Ryan Villopoto, Dean Wilson, Chad Reed, Ryan Dungey, Justin Barcia and every other athlete and team entered "are used as a marketing tool" because that's why they race, that's why they have sponsors -- to market themselves!

If you don't like the girls racing so badly that it's ruining motocross for you, may I suggest just going and hanging out in the pits for those 30 or 40 minutes, or go enjoy a snack at your campsite, or just bury your head in your hands and think about the things you do want to see.... No one is paying extra to watch the girls, and a lot of other people happen to think they are very good for the sport in general. I am proud to have them in the series and hope we can help them grow.

Your atttitude towards how people feel about the Women... it comes across as if we dont like it then go eat a hot dog...LAME!
I think its pretty obvious what the majority of the fans want but dosnt seem like you slightly care. How about we do a pole in Racer X? Lets really see what the fans want!
And now that Im picking bone, I have yet to hear one good reason Glen Helen was dropped...that race went on year after year and all of a sudden its not good enough for MX sports? What...Bud didnt put in a new toilet, fence...pool w hot girls?
Loosing GH was an insult to us all!

First of all, it's a poll, not a "pole," in this usage of the word. A poll involves a popular vote; a pole involves a popular stage item for places with names like The Gentlemen's Club and Lady Godiva's.

Second of all, I think I am allowed to bench race with someone when they say "girls are ruining motocross" here because I disagree, and I believe they do offer a great additional storyline to these races. But it's obviously not for everyone, so I suggested that they please don't let it ruin their day at the races, that they just take a break at that moment... If you didn't realize that my response to Burn and WORCS and Rupert was tongue-in-cheek then....

Wait, I am debating humor and women's motocross with someone named "bearded clam."

What about 6 rounds for WMX and 6 races for a pro/am class of some sort. I don't like the idea of only limiting it to two strokes.

No, let the four strokes dominate the premier class and the 450 class where the oems seem to want them. I still am of the opinion that a full on 125cc Outdoor National Championship for six rounds would be the best thing to happen to this sport since the advent of the double displacement extra weight limit required four stroke rule. KTM, Husky, TM and Yamaha obviously still believe in the 125 and I bet that DC does too. If Honda, Suzuki and Kawasaki don't have a bike to offer the buying public, then they shouldn't get their feelings hurt. If they want to participate, then offer up a bike. Why would KTM bring back the 125? Why would Husky bring back the 125 and pimp out a new headquarters? Why would TM get a new distributor here in the states and offer up a 125? And yes, for the Gas Gas doubters, that is a fantastic looking bike.

The new 250 and 450 classes have left a big dead space in motocross. Bringing the 125 back to the national stage would be a good thing and I can only imagine it is a Japanese OEM or two that is preventing DC to agree with me. A one or two round gig with mixed bikes would probably be as big of a flop as the CRF150R cup. I have yet to hear of anyone who gave that class a thumbs up.

I also don't understand the thinking of fans not having the attention span for more racing now. If they don't want to watch it why not grab a hot dog?

I have to agree 100%.

You have to wonder what would happen if DC actually said he would try it. What type of persecution would he face? Would Honda Kawasaki Suzuki threaten to pull out of the MX series? As long as no money has changed hands, this is the only thing they could do. Would be interesting, but I doubt they would. Hopefully, their bark is worse than their bite.
What would the series be like without them?

I suggest you pick up a copy if the book "tipping point". Two strokes, like it or not are coming back to amatuer racing. It's time for them to reappear on a National stage. IMO, the AMA Outdoor Motocross Series will generate real talent and excitement with the likes of AC and his contemporaries battling it out.

How did this happen? Its not because kids want them but because the
people who actually pay most of the bills in this sport >35 year olds are demanding it. They want to race them for $$ reasons and the people they pay for (their kids) are going to have to race them for $$ reasons too. I can tell you from what ive heard talking to many parents (who aren't hostage to contingency programs) is the kids don't want to race two strokes not because they aren't fun. Not because they aren't fast but because they aren't thought of as cool by other kids. Peer pressure is a powerful thing but given the choice between riding and not riding kids are choosing to ride what they are given at least the ones who are shaping up to be MX lifers anyway.

If they pulled out of 250 and 450 professional MX and SX because of an up and coming 125 class, can you imagine what kind of persecution they would face from the people that actually buy their bikes??? Holy smokers! Do you remember a couple years ago when Suzuki announced they were cancelling amateur support and contingency? What a shitfest that was, everybody was throwing rocks at them back then.

I agree two strokes are needed at the amateur level, but making 2-stroke only classes isn't going to bring them back from the dead like people think.

It's time they change displacement and then both 2 and 4-strokes can ride together. Won't happen.

If women are good for MX they should have their own series and if the interest is there it will stand on it's own merit.

No one goes to a National to watch the C class.

As for the Douchers bitching about the classes at LL....C'mon ya bunch of whiners!

Every year there is more and more complaining about classes. They should just give you a championship at the gate in the "guy that drives a blue truck rides a yamaha and wears his riding clothes to the track plus 32 1/2 class" and be done with it.

I really don't understand this issue. Given the choice between seeing another race and staring at the dirt, you guys would rather stare at the dirt?

Why did I never hear this much bitching during all of those years of the KTM Junior SX Challenge? After all, some of those kids could barely get around the track! What an embarrassment to the sport that must have been!

I love women. I love motocross. I love women in motocross.

They deserve to be in motocross and I want more involved.

They DO NOT need to be racing in the midst of the Lucas Oils AMA National Motocross Series on Saturdays..

Imagine going to a Lakers-Celtics playoff game and they insert a WNBA game in the middle of it ?

Imagine telling Danica Patrick to go race in a women's series ? Stop the segregation !

It will be a good day when some of the women try to step and, one FINE DAY, a woman will make it in and compete

against the boys. And I'll be cheering for her. Until then, the WMA needs to go on their own.
Seems many in motocross want to sometimes think in terms of NFL/MLB/NBA, but we have no reason to. Those are simply cultural aberrations. This sport is an enthusiast sport, a participation sport.

I've raced triathlon since '88 only about ten years after it became a sport and I learned quickly just how incredibly capable women in endurance sports can be, especially when treated as equal within it's culture. But that's the key, the culture of the group has to not be caught up in the sort of male dominance that is inherent in motorsports (in our case).

I guess a good question is whether MX is an endurance sport or strictly a motorsport. I think EVERYONE on this board knows quite well which one it is.

Enthusiast sports need professionals and hero's (or heroines) which allow youngsters to see an example to strive toward. Ashley and Jessica (and all the rest) provide that.

Ultimately , I for one don't care if the WMX has six races or not. Yes it will let certain women feel like they have a part of the MX scene. But this wasn't born out of any suggestions by fans, it has always been there. In fact, if an expanded 2-stroke class shows up at LLs this will be the first race suggestion put into place by any race promoter in the history of MX, without Japanese approval.

Mr. Clam, thanks for the suggestion but I don't make a lot of decisions based on online polls, whether it's with the magazine or this series. I do ask people I know and respect what their opinions are, and sometimes people just offer them to me. Then we talk about it and come up with a decision. Like Saturdays. And one-day formats. And the WMX.

I am doing what I think is best for the Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship, and part of that is living up to commitment to the WMX and the girls who don't have any place else to ride. They participate in support of the two men's classes that make up the championship, and not only do I think they add a unique storyline to the series, I believe we have a responsibility to give them a chance. You don't like them and I respect that. I am sure there are people who go to many different types of sporting events and don't appreciate or enjoy all of the entertainment presented to them, but hopefully the core of the event -- the 250 and 450 divisions -- are enough to keep you coming back. The crowds are growing, the TV audience is growing, the top riders are all back on the tour, with the best international riders coming here too, so it seems like we're headed in a good direction, given the challenges we all have right now.

And for the last time, Glen Helen canceled their national and did a longterm deal to produce GP races and maybe even a Motocross of Nations. I am not sure what else I need to explain here. I went to the GP last year and it was a very good event.

6 WMA for a championship
6 125 for a championship

Let the fans decide which one they like.

And the off-season downward spiral continues...

All I want for Christmas is a new race season. Oh, and an eco-fuel endurocross sidehack trials class.

Why don't we just make the WMX 125 two stroke only that way you please the old haggards who wanna see a two stroke ride again for no reason other than " It would be awesome to smell and hear them again " Sheeesh! FFS And so we do not offend the women.

WMX will be legitimate when it's current and past champions start qualifying for real show ...until then it is just a politically correct side show
