Tools and beer. What else do you need?

My garage is in a transitional state so I look forward to seeing what others have done.

Now if I could just keep everyone from throwing everything in there!

If you want idea's then you need to sign up over at www.garagejournal.com

This is my build thread from 2007....quite a bit more done since then, but no pics handy. Go check out that website.

Bought this place about 2 years ago. The detached shop had been put up in two phases and looked like this when I got it. The photo is one I got from the seller, so all the junk in/around was his:

Notice that the carport has a half-wall that was open above. There is actually another room that runs the width of the back of the building, which, BTW, is 40x40.

This is one from the side showing the old compressor shed. That's our RV hanging out of the carport.

Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures of the inside of this thing before I began....what the former owner had done was to put some styrofoam insulation up, covered by a sheet of drywall, and then drive drywall screws right thru the R Panels. If you walked too close, it'd tear a ditch in your skin.

After much consideration, including entertaining demo'ing the thing and starting over, I decided to rip off all the existing siding, and just reskin the damn thing. The roof was good, except for the whirlybirds and the cooler jack, so I pulled and replaced those sheets also.

For the carport area, we just covered the wall from ground to eaves, and then guttered the entire building. On the front of the carport, we installed a 12x10 overhead, along with a commercial 48" man door. For comparison, here's the "old" exterior again:

Followed by the new exterior:

Quite a difference. Notice the cooler installed on the roof of the compressor shed. It's ducted straight thru to the opposite side, as you'll see in the interior pics.

Ok, now we had an intact, new, pretty skin. But some challenges on interior finish. Particularly that block half-wall. This pic shows how we framed from the block up to the eaves, and also shows how we did the balance of the interior. We took steel studs, cut tabs a couple of inches from the ends, and bent them out before screwing directly to the girts. Enabled batting to slide in like wood studs.

Another pic showing the copper for air lines, as well as an exterior hose bib, along with outlets for 110 and 220. Note the small number of sheets of rock ready to go up.

At this point, we pulled wire for outlets every 8 feet, speaker wire for all three rooms, cable for TV, and put multiple compressed air (copper!) bibs in every room. The back room, which is 10 ft deep by 34 wide was designated for storage. To maximize this, we posted in a mezzanine and installed pull down stairs for access. Looking up into this area here:

You can see the stairs at the far end. Here's a shot looking up the stairs:

Another showing some of the storage:

The room that was the carport is 25 wide by 35 deep. This is a pic from the man door looking back. Note the evaporative cooler ducting, the large access to the back storage room, and, of course the Race Deck flooring. Actually, it's MotoFloor from Costco. I used laminate floor padding under all the tiles, and this has worked great to eliminate the 'clicking' as you walk.

Another shot looking at the old kitchen cabs I used from the main house remodel. You can also see some of the slat wall I put up for wall storage. Got a bunch of this for free when a buddy was pulling tons of it out of a big commercial remodel he was doing. You'll see more in the following shots of the woodworking room....

Here's one looking back at the man door:

Ok, here's a few shots of the woodworking room. I haven't finished the setup in here yet. Just got the machines spread out and slat wall up. Several boxes even left to unpack in here, along with doing the dust collection system.

The lighting is all 4' tandem T-8's, 48 feet worth in each room. Walls are semi-gloss white. The ceiling is batting, with aluminum laid under wire supports. I don't recall what they called this, but it sure turned out good from both a functional as well as an aesthetic standpoint.

My thanks to everyone on here for their great ideas and suggestions, even though they weren't necessarily directed to me. I don't think a shop is ever really finished, but at some point I felt like I needed to take some pics and post them to pay homage to those that have gone before me. Or something like that.....

This is just after I finished it. It is a little more cluttered now but I like being able to put things away.

Reminds me that the year is coming to a close and that I haven't finished my "garage mahal".....again. Added a three car garage, workshop, upstairs fitness room, theatre room, office, and a couple bathrooms up and down, covered patio out back by the pool and a 16 x 44 carport for a motorhome. Had it built six years ago, exterior finished and I was going to finish up the interior as time and money allowed. Not much free time and not much "extra" money the last few years so the interior has been getting chipped away at slowly. Did finish the downstairs bathroom earlier this year though! Here it is in another topic.

"What's my setup?" Jam as much shit into it as possible, leaving just enough room to trip over shit working on the project of the hour, put NOTHING away so coming back the next day to start again is a NIGHTMARE, let alone work the SAME day, have 9 projects going on at once so my ADHD is fully appreciated, and go home at night wondering why I get nothing done." Lol. I have a 40' by 40' shop rented, to maintain my rig. In that shop, I have a 71 Challenger in a million pieces, an 89 Kenworth in full on restoration mode with every fuckin' part strewn across the floor that will be my driver when it's done (pfffft. Not in THIS lifetime) a 93 CR250 with cases split, 07 RM 450 with a bad crank, 99 CR500 donor leftover from my 04 CR450 AF project, and a 93 Mercedes I just bought. It's still in one piece. For now. Oh, and a little Kubota 2 cylinder Diesel on my workbench I'm rebuilding for the Gen-set on my rig. Which won't fit in the shop cuz' there's NO ROOM. Another Donor drivetrain truck for my Kenworth outside, plus the rear-ends from the KW.
I have a radio in my shop too. Like listening to music when I'm working. If I could just FIND the damn thing!

Well for living in a small 1 bedroom aid in downtown huntington beach I must admit having a garage is a luxury and you can barely fit a compact car in mine but I have made the most of it ..... Got a toolbox on top of a cabineted roll away my 3 bikes and just recently built a shelf that has a fully functional computer connected to my house computer so I can listen to all my music and has a wireless internet card to surf the net whenever I need info on my bikes while working on them, surf this site or just look up anything I want, small but very effective compressor underneath. It's not nearly as pretty as some I've seen on here but I am very proud of the setup if I could upload pics from here I would but Photobucket is a pain ..... Overall I'm pumped on what I have made given the space I have and just finished it last week .... I'll try to get some pics up but still need a lot of half naked women and moto posters in it before she looks pert but I'm liking my newly renovated man cave. Good place to go when my gf wants to watch some fruity show on bravo Haha.

Here's my 2.5 car. No moto influence right now other than some posters, a pit board, and full time moto programming on the TV (too many truck projects right now!), but hoping to buy a CR250 before spring hits (last bike was a CR125 that I sold in 2005)

The house that it goes with

Current Crewcab project up on the frame table (project thread link in my sig)

Have to use it for winter parking though so nothing can be too permanent (frame table gets tipped up on it's side and pushed against the wall)

Also have a 12x12 shed in the back yard. It currently is stuffed full of truck parts (again... too many projects lol) but I'm hoping it can become the Moto Mecca soon after I run electric out there and finish a project or two Smile

Haha nope he doesn't do anything vicious other than bark... very well mannered 'rat' as you call him lol He's supposedly a pure bred Chihuahua, but now that he's full grown he's 13lbs. The vet says some can get that big but I think he's got some Rat Terrier or something else mixed in.

Thankfully he doesn't have an annoying chihuahua yap, but howls like a hound dog lol so taking that into consideration I really have no idea what breeds he is. All I know is he's the best dog I've ever had Smile

Nice man... I'm not too familiar with Jersey but I know a lot of guys in the South Plainfield area that have trucks. One of them runs Afterhours Fabrication out there

If he's not purebred, he should live a little longer. Which is cool in my books, 'cuz havin a pet/ friend around as long as possible is always a good thing. Animals give so much back to you and never even know it. One of their greatest attributes, absolutely no ego or pretension whatsover. Just your friend. Unless you have a 20' python in the living room. You might want to sleep with one eye open with THAT around.

I agree with that 100%...

He gets along so well with my 16 month old too which is awesome. They're best buddies and he's going to be around probably til she gets to high school which is great for everybody

We're all gonna be devastated when his time comes though... Sad

Here is my "cut and paste" also from garagejournal.com
I would take some current pics, but the place is a mess as I try to re-arrange for the new YZ-125
Enjoy...

So after the split I downsized and bought a new townhouse. It came with a 10' X 24.5' 1 Plus garage, just enough room for the bikes and tools etc. So this spring while I had some time off I started to work on my new reduced space (previous house was a 2-1/2 car garage).
Since space is at a minimum I wanted to keep as much as possible off the floor. I started by painting the entire garage white with a grey floor. I used Stonekote by Stonehard on the floors and a semi gloss white on the walls and ceiling. As I had nowhere to move the tool box, it was kinda painted around in place.
I then built the frame for my 6' X 2' bench and started putting up some Wal-mart laundry cabinets. I then put up some new lighting, six - 4' 2 bulb floresents. And also started hanging stuff on the walls.

Here are a few before, during, and after pics. I will get some current pics up soon as the doors are now on the bench etc......

Then I redid the floor in Race-Deck tiles as the epoxy was starting to show some wear.......

My setup is my 2 car garage. It's tight but it works. I have a shop press, a 200amp TIG/stick welder, a horizontal bandsaw, a 60 gallon air compressor, a home built roll-around work bench, a couple of tool boxes, one wall completely lined in shelves and more bikes than should be allowed in there.. Oh yeah, a stocked refrigerator covered in stickers.
