Over 800 acres are available near Road Atlanta, less than a mile off of I85. Perfect for a national level track, but DC had no interest for whatever reasons......many pieces to the puzzle, I suppose.

I just hope a SE race is coming!!

It's an interesting place to say the least but I think it's a bit off the beaten path for a pro national, though I would love to just go ride there for a couple of days. But there is another spot outside of Atlanta to the east that looks promising...

In a couple of weeks I am headed back down to Monster Mountain, as well as Barber (fifth time) and then down near Tallahassee. A lot of people are looking, gang, but the right track and the right facility and the right interest in having a motocross track of that size have yet to all come together.

Small bonus: Athens, GA, is my new favorite college town besides the one I live in!

I think DC is referring to Kings Ranch as promising. That's the only one I know of that was purchased by the folks at Bremen in the hopes of turning it into a National caliber track. Like he said though there is no activity there yet. May or may not ending up being a mx track.

My vote is for AMP. I would assume Matt Shue has enough connections to get his track ready for a national. I think the biggest challenge would be making a flat pit area for the semis and vendors

Iron city is a sad joke of a track. Good location, pathetic track. The few times I have rididen there, I really, really wanted my $20 back.. The actual track and facilities are much too small for a national anyway

Poor Patrick can't catch a break...I would love to see a national that close to home,but in order for iron city to get ready for one it would cost Patrick a million bucks to do the improvements to make it work. they just don't have the space for spectator and rider parking. I know it cost them a ton of money and aggravation for him to get that tunnel under the road a couple years back. The state DOT put him through then ringers on that. I believe he would have to redesign the track and make it at twice as long as it is now,maybe even longer. It's a cool track the way it is now and it's perfect for area and regional qualifiers, but does it have the potential to be turned into a track that can host a national?...i suppose with enough money anything is possible.....but of course that is the way with most things. For the love of Cod, DO NOT go back to Gatorcrack. That is the worst track ever, I have no idea how that shithole ever got a National in the first place and it damn sure does not deserve to be back on the schedule.

Barber, IMO, is a dead end DC. George Barber doesnt give a shit about dirt bikes, just look at his museum. I know the place is enticing because the road course and the facility in general are literally world class, and its less than a mile off of I-20 essentially in Birmingham, but there is a better chance that Rosie O'Donnell will vote for Sarah Palin in a future election than George Barber building a motocross track. George Barber can suck it.

Monster Mountain is the best track south of Budds Creek, and its leaps and bounds better than Freestone. The big track is darn near AMA National quality right now and would take very little work to make it a top 5 track on the circuit. I talked to Tom today at the SE Vintage race at Monster, and he has a good plan for the parking. The track is in a bowl/valley and from 3/4 of perimeter you can see the entire track, the WHOLE thing. I've been to all the tracks mentioned in this thread and Monster Mountain is by far the best choice, and I would say AMP is second, the track at AMP is fantastic, but it would need quite a bit of expansion for parking/infrastructure.

Kartwheel, I have a totally different opinion of Mr. Barber. I have met him a few times and he's a really nice guy. And while there aren't a lot of dirt bikes on display right now, the back room in the basement is full of them -- they took me in there to show me the future display they are working on. I saw everything from original Pentons and Rokons and Elsinores -- there was even a Cannondale in there! He's hosted several vintage motocross races and has an excellent area for the track. He just needs to decide if motocross fits in with the road course events already on the calendar there.

DC, I only met him once and that was in the elevator of the museum. I base my opinion on the fact that the vintage dirt "races" he holds there, which I have competed in since the first year in '06, are a complete and total joke. This at a world class road racing facility, and is supposed to be AHRMA's premier event, yet we "race" the MX on a pool table flat dirt parking lot so hard that a backhoe would barely scratch the surface. He told AHRMA he was going to build the "Worlds best Vintage MX track" 4 years ago, then the next year he said he changed his mind because, and I'm paraphrasing, "Dirt does not fit my vision of what I want for the Barber Vintage Festival". The ONLY reason we still race dirt there is AHRMA told him they would not come at all unless he allowed offroad too, which he did grudgingly.

I wish you luck, because the facility is incredible, but I would be shocked if ever worked out.

I think the guys with all the negativity toward Durhamtown should take a day to come back and look at some of the changes that have been made. If you guys know anything about the Georgia clay then you should know it can't be worked without 1. A lot , and I mean a lot of rain. or 2. The most high tech irrigation system spouting water constantly and consistently for copious amounts of time before it can be resurfaced. THAT BEING SAID.... If you haven't seen the bomber track you should. It has sand, clay, and soil on it and gets taken care of every day. No quads are allowed on it and it has more features than the rest of the tracks here. Durhamtown started as and will always be a facility for families to get into riding and enjoy the sport together; however, The new improvements to Durhamtown such as the Bomber and the possible new track coming are for those riders who are more advanced riders and actually ride Motocross. We are catering to a VERY diverse group of people and only improving with time. I urge you to come back and see for yourself.

As for civilization, DC is right. There isn't much around. I live here full time and I can't say that after riding stops during the week that it isn't quite boring. There is however, a ton of land here with trees on it not yet developed that could easily be made into parking.

I agree on MONSTER MOUNTAIN! It would be Great to finally have a National back in the DEEP Southeast. We need a national in the South East. There are many many fans who just get left out in the "cold" as far as the Nationals go. Monster has the room to make any length of track. Any type of difficulity, high tech type of obstacle.Track has elevation that would make it interesting for the racers. Hundreds of acres of land right next to the track for parking. Exits off the interstate have rooms and restaurants. It would make for a grand show. Now......Please..Please..Please...give a National for the South East!

Any track is going to require $$ infrastructure improvements to hold a national.

Gatorback has changed so the old hard pack area is now deep loam.

I dont care where the SE national is......anywhere down here will be great! I already drive to PA & Budds .....

Went to Monster Mountain once back in 2003 (the only event I have ever been a flagger at!). Jaw dropped when I saw the place. I'd like to go down there for a practice day and film away one day.

Since I'm new here, let me preface by saying, I grew up in Birmingham, AL, and have ridden or visited most of the tracks in Alabama. I grew up riding Mill Creek in Pell City. I've also been to one National, Kenworthy's, because at the time it was the closest one to the South East (so glad that's about to change).

Out of everywhere I've ridden in the past 12 years, and every where I've been, nothing even touches Monster Mountain. I moved to Auburn a little over a year ago, and I now have the pleasure of living just about thirty minutes from Monster Mountain, so I get to ride and race the track a couple times per month. The quality of that facility is absolutely outstanding, and the Brinkmans work their tails off to keep it that way. That would be enough to appreciate on its own, but they're also just great people - they always make time to ask how you're doing, how the track is that day, and if there's anything they can do better.

Beyond that, what makes Monster Mountain such a choice place are the things you can't build. The dirt there is perfect. It's got the ideal mix of sand and clay, so that it tills up into a perfect loam that gives you insane traction - a couple weeks ago they had an A rider rip his radiator shroud off from getting so much lean angle! As several others have said, the track sits in a natural bowl. Spectator viewing would be the best of any track on the circuit. And finally, the layout. It's simply HUGE. The track could host a pro National today and it would be one of the best; a few tweaks would put it at the top.

Logistics are no problem. Monster sits dead even between Montgomery and Auburn, about 25 minutes from either. Montgomery is a good-sized city with a substantial airport and plenty of hotels on I-85. Auburn has plenty of hotels on I-85 as well, as it regularly hosts crowds of 100,000+ for football games. As for parking, Monster is surrounded by hundreds of acres of fields immediately adjacent to the track. No problem there. Inside the track itself are vast flat areas which could hold whatever vendors and semis you could throw at it, and they already have RV hookups with power and water in-place. For those wondering about the roads in and out, they're great. I drive a commercial box truck in and out of there every weekend, and RVs have no trouble at all.

If you want a place that riders and fans alike are going to love, Monster is the easy choice. No one has to speculate on how it might be or what could be, because it's already there and ready to go. And I guarantee, if there's anything that needs to be changed to make it perfect, Tom is the type of guy who will make it happen.

We've heard a bunch of good feedback about Durhamtown. The diversity of your program is awesome - you guys have something for everbody! And looking at your really nice website, I think it would be hard for anyone to match your facilities. Tommy and I are gonna load up our bikes and head over to your place the first chance we get.

You guys both bring up a really good point that I overlooked about Auburn. I attended every home game last season and can vouch for the size of the crowds that that little tiny town can handle. Easily 100,000+. Someone brought up a good point earlier in this thread about Aonia and/or Durhamtown being able to use the students from Athens (UGA) as potential "new" spectators as Athens is only about 20 minutes away. If the national was to be held at Monster Mountain and the right combination of marketing and hype was portrayed to the students at Auburn, this could draw MASSIVE crowds. I'm sure both of you have been to Auburn Rodeo - those people will find any excuse to drink a beer!

Tom - if you don't already have a BYOB policy you should implement it. We have all been to Nationals, and although I'm a hardcore fan and am there for the racing, we can't overlook the fact that probably about HALF the people at a national are there to party. The difference in the "party scene" greatly depends on the alchohol policy/ and camping availability. Going from Milliville (which doesnt allow BYOCool to Budds Creek (which does allow BYOB and free camping) is like NIGHT and DAY difference.

My point? Bring the national to Monster Mountain, hire some student to advertise all over Auburn, add in some competitions for the spectators (like a 4 wheeler mud bog or 4x4 tug of war), allow the people to bring their own 30 packs of NATTY LIGHT (insert southern accent here) and watch your facility FILL UP Tom!
