Gone. I saw it once, at the bottom of a big pile of trash from the landfill. The track was on a very small lot (maybe an acre?).

More interested in hearing about this mystery location east of Atlanta DC wrote about. There was a private track in Grayson on a huge farm field, lots of rolling terrain. Plenty of parking, but kinda sucky access for semi's.

Other than Aonia/DP the only other known place is in Monroe (tiny, built over a landfill).

Another cool place would be the old Atlanta Prison Farm.. closed up and the area is fallow. Guys from the hood ride their quads & dirt scooters there.. Went there once on my Katoom, drove around and made a hasty exit. Lots of land there, and it's close to the landfill and airport, and no housing.. so it could be a cool place for a track. Decent access to Moreland & 285.

He had to be talking about Aonia. Monroe was just a baby SX track. I used to live in Augusta.
If Aonia gets a national, it will quickly earn the distinction as the most hard packed track on the circuit. Classic Georgia clay, hard as a freaking brick especially in the heat and sun. So hard that when they tried to mix sawdust in, it just washed away.

I think DC likes it cause his beloved West Virginia excaped with shootout win over the bulldogs a few years back in one of the bowl games. I recall him bragging about that win a time or two. Was that the Sugar Bowl in 05 or 06 one maybe?

See he can now go to Athens and brag about that. I think that's why he took a liking to the town. LOL

I really think that the only options down here are Monster (if the parking can get worked out), or course Barber and maybe Silver dollar with alittle work. I hope this works out because with the right promotion, it will draw alot of people from around this area.

The place outside of Atlanta is not a motocross track yet and may never be. Same goes for Tallahassee. And we are still looking in the Carolinas too. A lot of things go into this, including all of the parking for about 40 semis, and being close to civilization, and getting all of the permits and so on and so forth.

That said, there's lots of interesting places down there, but more to look at and sort through.

I too believe....or assume this is the case, at least for a track that is already built and in operation. A clean slate though with plenty of room kind of sounds where DC is leaning towards, in my opinion. I would LOVE to throw my track into the hat, but I know a lot of room.....I mean a TON of room is needed and we do not have it at the moment. At least not areas already cleared. There are a few big parking lots for the fireworks stores just a mile down the road right off the interstate though. Shuttles running every 10 minutes!!! HAHA!!

I am sure wherever they decide on and put their effort into will be great and, with all this anticipation, it should be one of the biggest spectator crowds of the year I would expect!! Close to ATL would be nice!!

DC why would you not try for Gatorback? It was always an awesome race and can be awesome again. Bring back the ELEVATOR!

Well.....in that case, let me call MARTA in from Atlanta!! HAHA!! Only a mile off of I-20 and less than an hour to Atlanta and about the same to Birmingham!!

It would be cool to make our track for the Pros and them only!! There are so many things we could do, but with our core rider base being the weekend warriors, we are limited to how crazy and big we can go. If any of you Vital members make it down south, make sure to stop by and see us!! We are open most weekends, at least one day, and always prepped just like the pictures above.

As for the rest of us speculators,

I would assume Barber is out because they now have the Indycar series and center their whole year around that.

Monster Mountain near Montgomery looks to be one of the best.

Kevin Kelly, whatcha got?

Aonia Pass or Durhamtown Plantation, both near Washington, GA. Durhamtown has enough parking for 50,000 people.

Bring the old Road Atlanta Trans-AMA race track back. In Braselton, GA.

And lastly, if looking for a new track area - Lumpkin County and Dawson County. 45 mins from ATL. 1 hour from the ATL airport. Lots of hilly terrain. In Dawson County they are building the Atlanta Motosports Park (AMP) http://www.atlantamotorsportspark.net/ on some land that the Elliotts sold. As in BILL Elliott, Awesome Bill from Dawsonville?
Monster Montain is our local track and it is great every week. Tom Brinkman and his son Tommy are both riders and that means alot. It would be a dream come true to hold a national there. There is a reason he is open 7days aweek during the winter, everyone loves the track. Riders from up north live there all winter. AMP is also badass.

Seeing that is already November , does a new facility/track really have time to be ready for a National next year. Pala tried the quick throw it together and was a disaster the first year. There is so much more than just the track that goes into it.

I guess if it was late in the schedule and a commited group they could get it done.

So far I would say Monster and AMP look like good options.

DC,

How about bringing back Road Atlanta? Barnett could build the track and scrape it off the ground the next day. There would be plenty of parking for teams and fans. Atlanta would be the home base for all the visitors but riders can stay at Chateu Elan, maybe even a charity golf tournament the next day.

Road A would be awesome!!! That place is a part of MX history and one of the first Pro races I can remember going to as a kid back in the late 70's and early 80's. I also got to race it when it made a comeback in the 90's and made quite a bit of money from the promoters who paid some nice pro purses back then!!

When they shut it down, it was rumored that the new owners of the facility gave the guy operating the MX track a choice to build another track somewhere else on the property, but he decided not to and just moved on. If that rumor has any truth to it, then the owners of Road A may very well be open to hosting a national on a newly built track. I did a GP race there once that used the MX track, a fun woods loop, a grass track and a little straight on some asphalt that was a blast!!

I can vouch for AMP absolutely great track, they could really turn it up a notch for a pro only event. I don't know about the parking, but you have a lot more than a lot of places. Trying to remember about Monster Mountain parking.....but would love to see a National at AMP or Millcreek either one gets us within easy driving distance.

Marty Smith was here today and it's official. He said "Monster Mountain is bitchin' - one of the nicest facilities I've ever seen!"

I'm a little on the partial side, but I agree with Marty....

And the parking. Don't sweat it. We have a plan.....

Thanks to all those who continue to advocate for Monster Mountain. We didn't build it - we're just blessed to own it and be the care-takers of one of American motocross' crown jewels.

Thank you to Davey and company for honoring us by involving us in the discussion and for your impending trip to the Monster.

We intend to put our best foot forward and let the chips fall where they may. There are alot of great tracks in the south, alot of great track owners and promoters and many thousands of motocross enthusiasts and fans that deserve a national.

Whether at Monster Mountain or another of the great facilities in the south - it will be a great day next year when Speed and Fuel TV are setting up cameras to cover the first national in the south since Gatorback.

Kudos to DC and everyone else involved for making the commitment to make a national happen in the south.

Cheers,

Tom B.

Tom, I LOVE mm but sadly haven't been in a few years (it's a 4 hour drive for me).

I'm sure you guys can scratch out some parking but what about access for the semis from the interstate? Aren't the roads on the narrow side? I would love if you got the event and would definitely attend. The monster would be one of the crazier jumps on the circuit. Just curious to see if you've been working with the local DOT people to get some road improvements to the site.
11/4/2011 8:25pm
I say MM.. Tom knows what he is doing. He has already taken down the Mini monster track and has put parking for up to 60 Semis. The land adjacent to him is also available if need be. The track is A_M_A_Z_I_N_G. I am sure Tom would have it ready 4 months before the national, HE DOES WORK! The riders, fans, and town would LOVE for MM to become a national.

My vote is def for MM!

The roads to Monster are excellent - wider and better than two nationals I've been to. We're 14 minutes from I-85 - most of which is a straight shot up Highway 229. We have semis in and out of Monster all the time hauling bulldozers and other equipment with no problem what-so-ever. Scratching out parking is not the plan. We already have one very large, flat parking area prepped, and two more planned in addition to the existing RV lot and have access to several hundred acres of flat, grassed parking to the east of Monster toward Tallassee. We have a plan.....

If you haven't been in a few years, then I invite you (and everyone else who hasn't been in a while) to make the trip. We've spent the last 17 months making one improvement after another. The track has always been fabulous - and we work very hard at keeping it that way. In addition we've invested incredible amounts of time, effort and money improving the facility.

We're getting people regularly driving from Memphis, Baton Rouge, and points beyond to practice on the weekend. I promise the four hour drive would be well worth the trip.

Gotta agree with all of this. As far as a track that CAN hold a NAT, Monster is it and the track looks better than the majority of the tracks on the schedule already. I have been there and met dudes from New York, Ohio, and Michigan that drove down there for just a day to ride. Tom definitely takes care of the place and I would dare say they have enough parking for a NAT. Also, the roads are definitely doable for the Semis and Motorhomes.

No, he just likes REM. (hey Davey)

You guys have some nice looking tracks down there!

If that's Monster Mtn in the helmet cam video that looks promising. The rider rode well, hit all the jumps and lapped at about 2:30. That's just about right. Widen it out, peak it up and we're ready to go.

Matt Shue's track looks nice, as well.

As we all know, there's a lot of considerations to be made, but as far as the tracks themselves go, it looks like you have a few nice ones.
