No way Stewart will reach McGrath's record?

There's no way I would bet against JS. I think it's a longshot, but if the guy is focused he is incredibly talented and faaast!

It will be great to see him try , but the math doesn't add up. I think he has 43 wins as of right now? MC had 72 wins.......so Stewart will have to win 29 more SX races to tie MC , and 30 to beat him. With 17 races per year , he would have to win 15 per year , over the next two years......losing only 4 races.

I don't see Stewart going past racing two more years......it's already been a pretty long career , as I think this season will be his 10th ( is that right?......already? ) year.......which for a lot of guys , that the time you retire.

Not saying it isn't possible over maybe a 3 - 4 year plan if he stays healthy , but the competition is going to get harder every year. It's not impossible , but there is a 99% chance it aint gonna happen. Either way , he'll go down in the record books as one of the best ever at SX.
Stewart has a three-year deal, so really he would have to win 10 per season...

I agree GuyB, but there are a few records out there that won't be broken. Hitting .400 for a full season, hitting in 56 straight games, Cal Ripkin's consecutive game streak. Edwin Moses not losing a 400 metre hurdle races for almost a decade, Gretzky's all time points or points in a year or goals in a year....

I honestly think MC's record will not be broken. Too much has changed in the sport. IMHO. Not bagging on JS, I just think he lost the window when it looked like he would do it and pile on a few more for good measure!

Not saying it isn't possible but his average over the last 5 years is around 6 and the competition is strong.

I was thinking about that earlier...
I think if he got within reasonable reach after 3 seasons and still wasn't there yet and felt he was still capable of winning coming into a 4th year/season. Just maybe if he wanted the record bad enough...we would see him part time or something along those lines for a 4th season. Obviously 3 years is still a while away and anything can happen.

3 years or 4 years.... It will be quite a task and accomplishment if he can do it.

The reason he went JGR is so that he can get off two wheels and into Four, he'll have one good test in the car and that will be that. I suspect he threw the record out there to try and save face in the Moto world, I really don't think he will be around long enough to even touch MC. It also seems like a lot to chew off for someone who's crapped out of the last three seasons and more than a bit dickish to the riders who have been beatin him.

No he won't. Assuming an average of 8 wins a year (which is probably a high estimate for ANY rider against today's competition), it would take him until around the year 2015-16 to break the record. What nobody is mentioning is that he'll probably have a season or two where he crashes out and only has a couple wins.

Had Ricky done SX only, I think he would have came really close to McGrath's record. Doing SX only, even for just a few seasons, is what allowed McGrath to make that record so high and is what will probably allow Stewart to pass Carmichael. Stewart is doing outdoors again so that will shrink the amount of time he has to break McGrath's record.

My prediction for Stewart's final total when his career is all said and done is in the mid 50's. 2nd all time in SX wins is an amazing accomplishment, and right now his focus shouldn't even be on the record... it should be on the 2012 championships. If anything, worry about passing Carmichael before you worry about breaking McGrath's record.

it's ridiculous how people on here lie to them selves or at least lie to make a point..... Ol'ger you sure as hell wouldn't be surprised let alone flabbergasted if "stew'balls" won 10 races this year. We all know he has the potential to do so. I remember not so long ago (2007) when he won 13 races against Chad Reed, Kevin Windham, and a part time RC. Will he do it? probably not... but I wouldn't be surprised.

Depending on how many years RV keeps racing, he should have a shit load of SX wins in the books too. I think he has 15 now.

Chad Reed's first MX win was in 2009. There's no way he has 28 wins since then. He didn't have more than a handful on 250f's either.

Barring the injured seasons, which are entirely his fault, James Stewart's worst full season of Sx was this year, with 5 wins. I think, against the same competition, when he has a good year, he can win double that easy. He just needs to stay consistent enough for 3-4 seasons.

I think it is very doable if he can keep it together. Granted, a lot of people could say that about JLaw or anyone else, but James is the guy, statistically, with the best shot at it. No one else is even close to James', Ricky's or McGrath's pace of wins... not even Villopoto or Reed.

out of the top 5 sx riders at the moment stew is the only one with the talent to win 10 races / season. all the others will win a few but not dominate. question is can stewart get everything around him in order this year. if stew gets comfortable on that jgr bike lookout.

So what happened last year? He raced every single round to. I don't doubt he has the speed to win.....we all know he does. But getting a good start , making no mistakes for 20 laps while being pressured......has been his down fall over these past few years. It will get harder and harder every year. BUT.....who knows? We will have to wait and see how he adapts to that JGR Yamaha.

The things he did to get that record go something like this:

1. Be as fast as an out of control Stewart, yet still as controlled as Dungey.
2. Preserve his body by doing SX only from 98-retirement.
3. Stay injury free. Do you ever remember him getting hurt in SX?
4. Consistency. He was always there. Year after year. Race after race. You have to be in it to win it.

I think it's more impressive that he got 72 wins AND 7 championships. Stewart gets the wins, but pays the price for it championship wise. Carmichael got the championships, but paid the price wins wise. McGrath got the wins and got the championships.

McGrath and Carmichael had an average of about 10 wins for every championship. Stewart has an average of about 20 wins for every championship.

Really? So you are telling me James looked the same on the "reverse engine" Yamaha compared to his '09 Yamaha or his Kawi's? I think JGR is going to do a better job with J-Bone assisting in setting up the bike properly for James. I think this combo will help James get closer and closer to MC's record.

Again, it's not the bike. It's the fact that 4 guys can now run his pace instead of just 2 or 1. This creates pressure, which he doesn't handle well, because he refuses to be the 2nd fastest in control guy. The bike worked fine in the heat races and when he got out to an early lead (aside from his error at Daytona). For all we know, the other 4 riders faced bike setup issues too, but because they rode within their bike's limitations, we never knew about it. We just assumed they were off the pace that day. He was the best guy in some races, as were 4 other riders last year.

Ok....that is kind of my point. "you know" this bike will fix everything? I wasn't going by just what happened last year.....i'm going off his full pro career of throwing it away about every other year. There were plenty of nights when he didn't need to push near as hard as he did......but still wadded. That's not a bike problem.....it's a rider problem. Also......this "new" bike he is on......has the same backward slanted motor his bikes have had the past few seasons.

What cracks me up is......is how some of you think , no matter what ( like you think you know something we don't?) and that Stewart is just going to go out and cake walk 10-12 wins over the next 3 seasons.

Sorry for bringing this up , but don't you guys remember last year about this time what Stewart said ( it actually pissed RV off from what someone said on here ) was that he was going to go out and win 12 rounds......not 11 , not 13 , but said "yeah......I'm going to go out and win 12 rounds".

What some of you guys fail to understand is....there are 4 ( or more ) guys out there , that think they can win as well. They all proved it last year to.

You can't honestly believe what you just typed. James is on the same bike with a reverse engine just like last year. James had 2 mechanics (if not more) and Tim Ferry test FOR him to fix this terrible bike, that there isn't actually anything wrong with. Even if there was something wrong with it, Stewart can't fix it, because he is a terrible test rider. If there was something wrong with the bike, which hindered your idol so much, he wouldn't be riding it next season. James will get 5 wins a year maximum the rest of his career. He won't pass MC. None of the top 5 current riders will pass MC's record unless 4 of them retire right now.

Yet it still astonishes me how anyone can believe that the L&M YZ450F caused James to wheelie over a kicker at Daytona, jump on lappers at Houston, jump through Chad Reed at Dallas, get hit and run over at Jacksonville, do a frontflip in Salt Lake, or lose control at Las Vegas. Or if you are referring to him losing his front end, RV's Kawi did that plenty of times in mains and heats, and Canard's Honda did it twice in the same corner in San Diego, and it seems to me like everyone loves the Kawi and Honda (and rightfully so).

With the level of competition i dont see him breaking the record. I am definitely not a fan of his and dont have much respect for him, however its like a car crash; its impossible to not have your eyes glued to him when he's riding. No it doesn't always translate into wins and he may not have the most championships but I dont care what anyone says, he is the fastest son of a bitch to ever ride a dirt bike. Since it isn't likely he will beat 72 wins, he can at least hang his crooked redbull hat on that.

He would have to win 10 races each year for the next 3. Thats not really too hard for him to do if everything clicks for those years. I still think he has untouchable speed in him. On the right program, bike, and atmosphere he can shut EVERYONE out the next 3 years. Yeah thats right 6 championships. Its possible he could turn out to obtain his potential.

The only thing that will stop him is injury. I think he has everything in place he needs to do it. I have a feeling we will see the happy, charismatic and dominate James Stewart that we have lost for some years. I figured he was done. However i seen that look in his eye, that smile and excitement we have all been waiting for.

No matter what the next couple years in motocross are going to be exciting. I say it all the time, I love this sport.
