Would you ever race an electric motocross bike?

I would build a mini sx track in my backyard if I had an e-mx bike. The RM annoys the neighbors and my KTM fooper is also too loud and too heavy for a tiny track.

It would be odd but yes. However I don't think that day will be in my lifetime or at least the next 20 years. The bikes would be too expensive and at the local level there would still be more gas powered bikes available.

I could see the addition of an all electric class. But I wonder if two motos can be done with a single recharge of the batteries???

I agree one day that will be the only way, but why is that also blamed on 4-strokes?

It would be at the hand of the government/environmental movement, not because everyone went out and chose them over gassers. I definitely think it will be in our lifetime, we may be too old to ride though.

If the sport goes electric, I'll be "that guy" who shows up on old bikes with real motors.

Everyone will say they are shit and too complicated...then a factory will race one and win everything...then we all go buy one and bitch about how cheap it was to race 4 strokes and how electric bikes have killed the sport.

Good times.

There was a guy racing an electric bike in the modern class at the recent Vets MXdN here in the UK last month - it looked like it would be good fun for 5 minutes, but ultimately it was way too slow and just... odd really.

Considering the event was basically a big twin shock fest for vintage enthusiasts mourning the death of 'proper motocross' I found it more than ironic! Smile

This. The day E-bikes take over is the day I quit riding AND watching motocross.

I'd like to say no but I'd be lying. If me and anyone else I know had one they would ultimately end up being raced. It seems we race anything that will move.

i have been wanting to for quite some time out of curosity and i think there are endless scenerios for riding opportunities.

at least while at a sx race we would actually be able to hear the announcing and the music...

I'm interested to see what KTM can do and can't wait to try one. Would be strange having a hand break for the rear....

I dont see electric bikes suddenly taking over the sport, but they definitely deserve a place in it for sure. I think they could be great bikes and open new dimensions to riding, and that can only be a good thing. Without noise problems, motocross could really expand into new areas and have many more new tracks.

We just bought a Volt, and when you drive it, the incredibly instantaneous power delivery is amazing. It's not like an internal comubstion engine where you step on the gas pedal and wait for the engine to wind up and deliver power - when you step on the gas pedal the power is there instantly. That kind of power in a MX bike would be a game-changer.

On the other hand, a 30 minute moto would likely drain the battery below the level it needs to deliver full current, and it would take a long time to charge back up. I don't think people would like going out and riding a moto and then having to crank up a generator for two hours to charge the thing back up.

The other question is the sound. Motocross is a visceral sport. It's not about practical transportation where low noise is a goal. I can't imagine motocross without sound - it would be like the NBA without dunks. You don't need dunks to play basketball, but it's an exciting part of the game, and the experience wouldn't be the same without them.

IMO, the place for battery powered motorcycles is in commuter vehicles. Can you imagine commuting on a bike that uses no gasoline and can get you to work and back easily on one charge? And is quiet, dependable, no maintenance, and very, very responsive to ride? You could tell OPEC to suck it.

Hey, and think about the videos! That annoying music might be welcomed over the silence and the slap of the chain in the swingarm. I still love that video of Ping coming through the corners making Brraaaapppppp noises with his mouth. I'm sure Mitch Payton would come up with the Pro Circuit noise emulator......programmable for 2 or 4 stroke sounds.
