I noticed in the GP RR series, quite a few riders have hydration systems in that funny looking hump on their backs.

If it keeps a rider fresh instead of getting heat stroke and creating a more dangerous situation then what's the problem? Anyone recall Mike Bell running away in the USGP at Carlsbad in stifling 100 deg heat? During the last few laps he was all over the track like he was drunk. He was suffering from Heat Stroke, not sure if he even finished, but it wasn't pretty.

Back when I had my first thumper--01 426, I use to love riding it so much I would do 55 min practice motos with a camelback at SpeedWorld in 90 deg heat with no problem. There would be no way w/o hydrating.

good point gman, bell could have died from that stuff. very bad for the body and brain

For me, it's just a fashion thing that people aren't used to seeing.

Can you picture marathon guys running their event without water stops?

Actually, I think it takes some talent to use a camelback during an mx moto. It's not like trail riding.

Camelbaks aren't illegal, but two way communications via radio are.

If he needed a camelback for a 70 degree cloudy day, he's gonna need a 55 gallon drum for the humid mid-West heat later on in the season.

Oh cmon, this isnt MIkes first rodeo - hes been racing all over the country, in all kinds of weather since he was a lil fart. He's using the hydration because why the hell not? If you think about it, it makes sense. We use 'em off-road, no reason not to use them in moto also. Just takes a little getting used to at first.

I wonder for how much longer? DMG has already said that they're interested in riders using them in road racing.

Not sure, boss. I remember a few years ago when Ty Davis used a radio at Mammoth Mtn so his "spotter" could tell him where people were on the track.

Me, personally, I wish riders had the choice to use them if they chose to do so.

What the photo doesn't show is the catheter tube that runs down his right pant leg and turns out at the heel of his boot. This allows him to piss on anyone that gets to close.

One comment though: Don't use a Camelback! The company supports the Sierra Club. They are trying to shut down our riding areas. Other companies make hydration systems that are just as good or better.
As I understand it, that's an urban legend. One that was started by a now ex-employee that was an eco-nazi, and that Camelback has said it's not true.

Even a regular-sized hydration pack makes more sense than no pack at all, and that's what 99% of the guys out there are using.

On some models they're set up so there's no insulation between the fluid and the rider's back. Fill it with ice and liquid, and you get the added benefit of the fluid doubling as "coolant" on the rider's back.

I'd also suggest that a rider who uses one in the first moto would likely recover faster, and be stronger for the second moto, than someone who didn't use one.

Why do you want to cloud the topic with sensible replys? Your really bringing this place down.

It would be cool in some aspects, but I hope they stay clear from it as they have been. Just sets a bad example for amateur kids thinking they need radio garbage and adds more cost to what was once a cheap sport to get into.

What would you really need to hear anyway?

Be cool to listen to the rider/mechanic chat during a moto.
Set it up where Chad and Bubba could chat while racing....

JS..."move sissy."
Chad..."I would park you if I didn't have sand in my mouth."

That was a TORCs race, I hit a few of them this year.

You are right, theres no place I can think of in a scramble to take your hands off the bars long enough to reach for the mouthpiece,, too much going on all the time. Hard enough snatching a tearoff.
