Probably the most incredible show I've ever seen was an early '90's Flaming Lips show at the Cats Cradle. I didn't know who they were, but a good friend (who knew his stuff) told me I oughta go, that I wouldn't be disappointed. Man, was he right. Vintage Flaming Lips, absolutely mind-blowing. "Halloween on the Barbary Coast" was the last song of the night, and I will never forget that -
There's something just so cool about seeing a band you're not familiar with, and getting absolutelty blown away with them
1st time seeing them w/ Marr, I guess?
You and I have talked about the White Animals before , but it worth mentioning I still listen to them all the time. They put a new CD of all new material out around 2000, and it sounds as good as anything else I own.
He started the show with a solo on his bass that sounded like a damn drum solo. But then they hit him with a spotlight and the crowd was blown away. He also played a big tall stand up bass at one point. All the while wearing a huge Uncle Sam style top hat.
I've been a huge Primus/Claypool fan ever since.
Yeah I know he was a stand-up comedian, but half way through the routine, they set-up a set of drums on stage and he starts playing solo on them. One by one, here comes Slash and the other G & R guys, except for Axle, like usual and it to this day that was one damn good concert.
Pit Row
Most suprising show was at one of those festivals, Gov't Mule played the second stage. I was going after a beer and caught the first song while in the beer line, and stuck around for the rest . Excellent show.
we were bored at a wedding reception and I suggested to some out-of -towners that we go to Sam's, "Yeah, it's a dive, but they sometimes get some good talent" I told them.
Well SRV showed up, no one had heard him before, and damn nation he blew my freakin' hair back!
The leader of Morphine died a while back...I think he had a heart attack on stage or something weird???
Anyway. Nerve Clinic were very loud, music very creepy, slow, dark.. they had performance artists who came out of big garbage cans filled with slimy guts and worms. Later in the show they had old TV sets playing videos of people being burned on piles of branches and wood. It was weird and disturbing, but interesting to watch & listen to.
I saw a few other bands there too, like Pylon who still play from time to time (and they are still good, unlike other aging athens bands (don't buy the new B's record it is terrible and sad).
Hey Dean - yep, Nirvana played the Cradle, but I missed them - I thnk it was just before I got into indie rock and the local club scene. Good story - a buddy of mine went to the show, and he tells of how he lost a shoe during the show somehow that nite, doesn't know when or how
Never saw Lets Active, but Angie Carlson had a band here for a while called Grover - I loved 'em, thought they were pretty good and caught lots of their shows. I saw Mitch Easter play a Sneakers reunion show (with Chris Stamey), opening for the Pressure Boys about 3 weeks ago - was a really fun show, with the Pressure Boys finishing up with a killer cover of Radar Love
Metallica pulled up into the parklin lot in some semi-trucks, pulled the side off one, it had a stage already set up.
They played for about 50 minutes all the way until right before kickoff. It was free, they did it as a favor to emperor palpatine...er....davis. Theyre all Raider fans.
It was a great show. Nobody knew they were going to do it, hows that for a "suprise concert"?
I had never seen the Pressure Boys, tho', so I got a kick outta seeing them - man, you shoulda been there, they were tight, the show was awesome. Not to take anything from the rest of the band, but Plymale is an amazing front man -
also atlanta rhythm section, somewhat mellow on albums, rocked live.
