I am a car guy (any vehicle) but moto comes first nothing can compare. In April I will be buying a vehicle I really wanted something like a infiniti g35 or a 98 bmw 5 series, but i think I wouldn't be able to tow a dirt bike with one because its to low to the ground. From using my uncles truck when I go riding I've realized how bad they are on gas, I was also looking at an el camino but gas and insurance would be brutal. right no im thinking something like the subaru wrx wagon, anyone have any good ideas or know if i could put a hitch on a g35 or 5 series

You'll spend more on maintaining a 15 year old 1998 5 series BMW than you would ever spend on gas for a decent truck. What kind of fuel mileage would you expect to get out of a G35, 25 mpg ?? And would that be G35 coupe or sedan? One of my friends put a hitch on the back of his diesel VW Jetta and pulled a small trailer with a street bike or two. I'm not much of a VW fan, but he was always knocking down between 40-50 mpg between his Jetta and his Passat.

My first car was a 55 Ford Fairlane. It had 40,000 miles on it.

Get a van!
You can haul your bike in it,live in it when your parents kick you out, bang broads in it,camp in it,move in it,pack it full of people, smuggle weapons and all that good stuff.

I got my 1998 gmc sonoma when i turned 16 for $1000 with 179,000 miles on it and know i am 18 and still driving that truck to this day. Its a 5 speed manual and the other day i timed it from 0 to 60mph and it took a whopping 23 seconds. I dont care how slow that truck is though cause its fun and it gets me to the track with no problems at all.Smile

My 1st car was a 1970 Camaro when I was 15 years old in 1979. Drove it for a year under a learner's permit before getting my license. I wish I had that car today... $$$

I had a trailer hitch installed and pulled my bikes to the races from 1980-1982 behind that car!

Very cool! My 2nd vehicle was a 1982 S-10 in 1990. Me and my friends too that thing everywhere! It wasn't the best, but it sure helped build character! When I got my 1991 S-10 brand new, I sure did appreciate it!

LMAO There's some classic shit right there! Lot of truth too! Dustin, I dragged my bike around on a flatbed piece of shit trailer behind my NEON, for God's sake, after my ex-wife cleaned me out. Cops still haven't found her body, but that's a story for another day. Or possibly another thread. Buy something good on gas and popular so parts are cheap. That NOT being any vehicle with "BMW" in the nomenclature. Maybe a little S-10 Chevy or Ford Ranger. You're young son, but forget the "cool" shit. Motocross will eat up enough of your money, spend wisely on a vehicle. That way you will have lots left for MX and women. Because that's the NEXT thing that'll come into your life and mess it up. Jus' sayin, bro.

Do not buy a BMW. They are the big lie! I work on cars, and trust me when I tell you that BMW's are waaay overrated and will nickle and dime you to death. What the other guy said: Buy something cheap and plentiful. Save the fancy stuff for later in life if you still want it.

any nice car is hitch-reluctant it seems

i really loved my IS300 but if you're into bikes you need a truck IMO at the least...

Honestly, even if i had a nice car again I'd get a truck just for the bikes if i rode alot.....no way would i want a nice car near an MX track or any riding area.

Listen to me now and hear me later... You want a nice mid-80's Ford Econoline Van with the straight 6, 300. I had one (along with me 51 Chevy) when I turned 16 and it was by far the absolute best vehicle ever! That motor wouldn't die and actually ran for 3 months without oil!! You can get one cheap, put a bench behind the front buckets, maybe a wall and a fold down bed? Take along a portable toilet and propane grill and your stylin'!!

They can be had for cheap too!!

I strongly suggest you get one of these from your current car fund (shouldn't put you back too much) and then save up for a nice daily driver car.

Or... go all out and just spring for this:

Those old Econolines with the straight 6 -300s are awesome! Always had a few buddies that ran them for racing. Set up good, they were the hotel, shop, and the kitchen.

Or, buy yourself a clean little s-10. They are great little trucks mechanically. Kind of rattly, etc... but reliable as heck with the v-6 in them. Stay away from the "Image" of vehicles. If you want to put the largest possible dent in your financial future, try to run image vehicles.

Wait just a gosh-darn minute!

S-10s are ok if you get a later-model one (late '90s or so) with a 4.3l V6. The earlier ones with the 2.8l V6 are horribly crappy. Unreliable, weak power and shitty fuel mileage is no way to go through life, son.

You need to shuffle on down to your Chevy dealer and take a test drive in a 2012 SS/RS with an LS3 (with the factory Hurst short shifter)...... I did---and replaced my Porsche with modern muscle. A ton of fun for $38k.

Win. Economy and versatility. Folding trailer fits into garage--will even stand up in your apt.

I was in the same boat. I have a 2005 BMW 6 series and briefly looked into putting hitch on it, but in my opinion, you don't want to do that. Too expensive, voids warranties, hurts the value of the car, and just looks bad (for some). Plus most tracks don't have the best roads or parking lots for a car like that.

I had Chevy trucks all before that car so it never was a problem. What I did was look for a cheap used small truck (S-10) or Van online (Craigslist, etc...) and found a used white Ford work van for $3K that was in great shape. I almost bought a nice 1998 S-10 for $2,300 that had less than 100K miles. But the work/commercial vans are the way to go because they have the space and some already have shelves and stuff for parts and equipment. I never use it unless I'm going riding (and I have a free moving van lol). Plus no worries about rain or advertising that you have expensive equipment in the back. If you still want the other car though, you obviously have to have room for two vehicles and pay insurance on both (but insurance on the van is dirt cheap), so it's not the best option for everyone.

If you can only get one vehicle, get a nice truck instead of the G35 or BMW. Some get decent gas mileage.... And Newmann is right, used BMWs are expensive to maintain if you don't have a plan and very expensive to fix if something breaks.

Forget the BMW. Yes they are nice. But you need the coin to support it. To put that into perspective for you, I had a 740i and it apparently had the ability to have a car seat teather strap attach to the back deck. I had to take it to the dealer to have this done, which on a normal vehicle is pop off a piece of plastic, attach strap. They had to have the factory fax over instructions and it cost me $350 to attached said strap. So...think if you have a break job, misc repair, etc...Which all has to be done with BMW specific tools. I would check out a new 3.7L ford f150 (low $20K new) 20-25 mpg and full sized. If not a few years old truck, van, suv with decent mpg and as stated before easily obtainable parts. I had a buddy that towed a 3 rail with his Jetta TDI. Remeber you're looking for a daily driver and not just a to and from track vehicle, so go with what you will benefit you the most, the daily driving part. Track transpo should be secondary.

Hey Hey Hey!!!! Gosh Darn it!! This man knows of what he speaks. Read what he wrote, and heed the advice! The around 2000 and newer ones were super reliable. Thats what my son had, was a 2001 S-10 extreme with the 4.3 in it. That thing was awesome, and got decent mileage. Yup.. the older ones were no where near the truck. The Rangers from the 2000s or so were great little trucks too..

If it were me, and I was back at that stage in life, Id get the van for sure. Good for everything. Plus, if you wanted to pimp it out a little, a set of rims and some decals, it would be pretty cool.

1997 Nissan Frontier bought this Truck when i got out of MMI with a 1993 CBR600 F2 in the bed for 3.2k still have the truck bike is long gone. This is the best little truck anyone could ask for gets 35mph on the hwy and 25 around town, has a 2.4L twin cam motor that out pulls any other pick up in same class. Would not recommend a car to any moto guy.

I wish they still made the straight sixes. My buddy Sean had one we used to go to the races in when it was his turn to drive (most of the time, heh) and that thing had tons of torque and could easily haul a bike in the bed with all the gear and tow a trailer with another couple of bikes on it without breaking the bank on gas. Rock solid reliable too.
