Some of you may have seen a few days ago the thread with the painting of my late Uncle David, done by Rob Kinsey, that I gave to my Father. Within that thread I spoke about my Uncle's contribution to Florida motocross and how he introduced me to this crazy sport.
We always speak about how people in motocross are "one big family" and while I agree with that, I think many times we forget this or take for granted the common bond between us, but today that bond and "one family" feeling was reinforced.
Vital member "Project Racer" who lives in the Tampa, Florida area saw my Uncle's name and it rang a bell in his head, and he went digging through what must be a massive collection of old magazines and found a copy of Cycle World, March 1973, with a letter from "D Kimmey, N. Miami, FL" (my Uncle) about his 1972 Yamaha DT2 MX and his seven month rider/owner experience, basically his own "Owner test report."
Without hesitation, Project Racer offered the issue to me, refusing compensation, sending it to me by USPS Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation.
It arrived today. Something I never knew even existed, a letter my uncle wrote to a national publication about his experience with an early MX bike.
The funny part of this story is that that bike was the bike my Brother raced his very first race on. Without permission from my Parents, he and my Uncle snuck off to the old Deerfield MX track in Deerfield Beach, FL, where my brother proceeded to twist his ankle badly and that got him busted by my Mom on his racing his first race.
Many times I lose hope in regards to some of the folks in this sport, talking about the "good old days" and how "people were back then," and then someone does something so honorable and kind, it renews my faith in my extended family.
Now, the fact that he can remember the name of someone who wrote a letter published in a magazine in 1973 is a level of memory retention or psychosis that is amazing.
Thank you, Doug, thank you not only for the magazine or for showing me something about my Uncle I never knew, but thank you for restoring my faith in the people in this sport.
I wanted to make sure everyone knew how kind of a person you are and the selfless gesture you made.
I will always be grateful.

it has been some time since we have talked.
I understand your feelings on this subject. I seems that everyone is too busy with work or looking for something negative to say on a forum to look for the positive in every day living.
If everyone just took a minute to do one kind, unexpected thing each day a lot of issues could possibly be solved.
Good to see that someone was able to do something unexpected to cause you so much joy.
Talk to you soon.
It's funny, over the years I have contemplated just heaving all of those mags to the trash, but can never bring myself to do it.
It's times like these that make keeping them around worth it.
Awesome.
Sounds like a hero to me.
