Bell throwing it down with a 1:53 something, very impressive. lots of 1:55, Hill, Thompson, Covington, Siminoe, Martin. going to boil down to a good start and a solid moto. nothing new, but I didn't expect this many to be that close.

Are we talking the whole package of bike prep, qualifiers, and the race itself or just the race week alone? It definitely helps to just run stock classes like we use to growing up. That way the budget minded family can at least try to compete. Mod classes increase the cost several times over.

No audio that I have found.

Nice ride by Bell, for all the injuries he has been through that is awesome. Great ride by Martin as well considering he was like 24th at end of lap 1. He showed he is in shape as he had the fastest laps there at the end.

In 2009 I spent $7K going. $2K of it was in gas, towing the trailer from California with a V10 Superduty.

I spent well over what I should have a few months ago to help a local kid on 85 and Supermini just TRY to get to LL. $10,000 for a toyhauler for the family to travel in that they never used, the rest went for 2 Superminis, 2 stock 85s, 3 parts bikes, 2 sets of suspension, 2 sets of jerseys/pants/gloves, helmet, miscellaneous spare parts, and tires. He didn't make it past the area qualifier, and the family later wanted out of our deal. In retrospect, I should have listened when one of my friends warned me that it was going to be a money-losing venture regardless of how I organized it.

And what part of amateur racing did you see as a great business opportunity?

Freeburg had the holeshot and went down a half lap in. His ride back to the front was impressive. Peters also crashed while leading nearly flipping his bike into the Redbull viewing tower.

By the way, we made it to LLs on one bike for practice and qualifiers and the race. Matt is riding a STOCK 250F in Schoolboy 2.

On the other end of the spectrum, I qualified for LL's on my trusty 1990 YZ125 in both the stock and mod schoolboy classes. Run the bike stock, then bolt on a few mods for the modified class. My family drove to Hurricane Mills in our Suburban with a 3 rail trailer and my one YZ125 (the same one I qualified with). We rented a motorhome as lodging for the week and split the cost with another family from my area. My whole family had a great time, and at no point during the week did I feel like my program was lacking. My performance was seriously lacking, but that was on me. I'm guessing my parents had $2,000 or less in the event including area qualifier, regional qualifier, and the National.

Starlings bike broke on the second lap.

Great racing in the 85 classes. Cantrell had a start out of the top 20 and came back to win in 9-11. Mosiman came from way back for third and Chase was second after stack crashed on the last lap.

It wasn't a business opportunity as far as a profitable venture. We knew that going in. It was organized to be a great opportunity for sponsors and advertising. I was fuly aware that we would not turn a profit. We were projecting a 10-15% loss. I can't remember who it was that said it, but someone was once quoted as saying if you want to walk away from motocross with $1,000,000, start with $2,000,000.
We're backing a few other riders now, on a MUCH smaller scale, and everyone is very happy with each other. One of them made it to LL, so we'll see how this week goes.

We really thought that anyone wanting to go to LL or Ponca would want a deal like that. We were wrong. It's a lot easier to SAY you want to get to the next level, or want your kid to get to the next level. It's not so easy to DO. But, we tried, and we gave 110% on our end, that's all we can do. It really soured us on doing anything on that scale for anyone else, though.

Well good on you for giving it a go. Youngsters that age can change their minds pretty quickly on what they want to do.
