Highsider, I was at a few of those, I think they are right!

1975: Baldwin, Kansas for bikes

1976: Carlsbad for bikes (my old friend Ferrell McCollough from Maryland won the 125 class)

1977: Lake Sugar Tree for bikes, High Point Raceway for Youth

1978: Road Atlanta for bikes, Baja Acres in Michigan for Youth.

1979: Plymouth, CA for bikes, Otter Creek, Iowa for Youth

1980: Millville for bikes (won by the Hinkle brothers, Kreg Bigelow won the 125) and Brownsville, PA for Youth

1981: Red Bud, MI, for bikes, Rolling Hills, NC for Youth

1982 and on, Loretta Lynn's

But in 1987 Jeremy McGrath went 1-1-2 in the 125 C Novice class for the title. I just realized he got beat in his last moto by someone I have never heard of.... Does anyone here want to venture a guess to that all-time trivia question: Who beat Jeremy McGrath in the last moto of the '87 Loretta Lynn's race?

Robbie Neeley beat MC that year, but it was in the slow race. Robbie say`s he got tired of sitting still after passing MC`s time and went on. Only to have the rider behind him go longer than Robbie and win.

Wet Paint, it wasn't McGrath that Neeley waited and passed, it was Tony DiStefano in the Vet class! Neeley had some amazing rides down there, and he and Tony D. crashed across the finish line together, but Robbie still won.

MXMat, your old friend who passed on, Jon Rightmire, from Groton, NY, raced 125 B Mod in 1992, the same year that Ping won that class. Jon went 4-15-20 in his three motos and finished 14th overall.

I raced LL and Ponca, along with Mini Os and Vegas in the late 80s and all through the 90s till 2001, and then back again in 2009 in the +25 class. believe me, it was just as hyped. Just because there was no internet to cover it doesnt mean it wasnt as big of a deal. we started getting ready for LL after gainesville just like everyone does now. ask anyone who has ever raced it any year how big of a deal it was.

dont question something you know nothing about. i was racing 125b there the year you were born.

Most of the So Cal riders Ron Lechien, Larry Brooks, Scott Burnsworth, Eric Kehoe, Mike Healey, back then I don't remember any of us going to those races. But we did have other big World Mini amateur races at Saddleback, Escape Country, Barona Oaks, Indian Dunes, And Elsinore. They included what was the Yamaha Race of Champions back in So Cal.

Yep I didn't see where you said anything bad some of the others get a little rough. And yes the boy is all Kid

I have no idea on who did or didn't race LL's for me that race might as well of been in China, no way I would have ever had the time to get there.

Ron Lechien was the man in 82. It was a cool race then and still is. Paul Dennis and Danny Storbeck battling in the 80's class. Ron Lechien won the 100 class. That year there were many guys from my hometown (St. Louis) that went to the ranch. Mark Barr riding a KTM in the 125 class. Lance Dudley on a Suzuki in the Open class. Billy Fosnock and Mark Tripp in the 80's. Good times. I didnt go back until 2001 and saw Bubba race his last races as an amateur. I remember thinking that the place looked exactly the same even after 19 years.

To answer the OP's original question, yes there have been many guys that didnt ride at any of the big amateur nationals, but not many since around 82 that were not from out of the country. Its just too cool a race to miss if your good enough to make it. DDavis seems to be a good rider, have you tried to qualify?

DC, thanks for taking the time to look that up, it's appreciated! I talked to his father last weekend and he was talking about how hard it was for Jon to put in 3 solid moto's down there, something always seemed to happen. He couldn't remember his moto scores but knew he had one solid race and thought that Pingree was in the class. I'm going to print this out for him. Thanks again!

From what I remember he started racing NESC in new england when he was like 21 or something and did local racing for several years out here.
