I come from a long line of racers but my dad hasn't raced since 1980. The first bike my dad ever got new was a 1976 YZ125. I have been wanting to find him one for quite a while so he could go race AHRMA with me. I knew where one was for the longest time that was in really good condition. The guys a huge Yamaha nut and would never sell it to me, until today!

I wish I would of gotten it under better circumstances but the guy was hard up for some money and made me a smoking deal on it. Dads lived a pretty rough live to say the least and is having a Kidney removed on Monday. Hoping to have this thing race ready by the first AHRMA race in Arizone in January. Pics soon to come.

Thats awesome Racerx930. I had one of those little jewels back in the day. First brand new MX bike I owned. I`m sure when your dad finds out it will make his recovery a little easier to handle. You`re a good son. Good luck to your dad with his operation.

Bravo... I know where your coming from on this. Last year I gave a photo of my dad and I taken way back when at Saddleback with both of us sitting on his Ossa (me on tank as a 7 year old). He loved it and it brought tears to his eyes. He's never seen the photo before. I've saved it all these years and I never gave a hint that I had it. I can only imagine what that Yamaha will do.

My Dad and I bought two new DT2 Enduro`s together back in 72`. He kept his until he passed away in 82`. My brother trashed it so I brought it home in boxes. After reading your story It motivated me to start tinkering and I had enough parts laying around to put together a pretty cool looking bike. Nothing like new but , it should be a blast to ride. Oh yea, he actually bought my 76` YZ125 so I could buy a 78`. He could never get over the fact that it would run circles around his 250. Hope your Dad is doing good.

Thats really cool, my dad used to really be into MX when i raced, he knew how to ride, but never raced, now he wont go at all, last time 6-7 years ago, we went to Lorrettas to watch and it was hot as heck, he told me on the way back, he wont go again, because of the heat.

I still have this bike,which is my step-dad's,(who is my REAL dad) that he bought new for $695 in '76. I had the X model YZ125,with the gas forks ,as my first racer.

I have started a restoration on the MX. Have all new NOS plastics, tank and seat restored, frame powdered. Need to get the wheels rebuilt,and freshen the engine.

Last true twin shock MX Yamaha.

Thats a neat little bike you have there Project Racer. I had the "C" model YZ. A buddy of mine had a MX like yours that I could go just as fast on. A restoration for the DT is out of the question right now. The frame and engine was basically all that was salvageable. Currently, it has MX400 wheels, 36mm forks w/ Goki caps, US Sports swingarm, TT500 shocks, Bassani pipe, MX360 seat, and a MX400 tank with a YZ strap. A real Heinz 57 model. Believe it or not, it handles better than expected. It should run okay once I replace the top end. A circlip broke in half (Wiseco) and destroyed the piston and head but I have extras thanks to Ebay. Well I'm finally getting around to working on this bike for my pops. Today I realized someones done something really screwy with the ignition. It looks like it has maybe a DT points & condensor type stator and flywheel on it!. Anyone know what all year ignition setups will work on these things? I have a ton of Yamaha parts bikes around but this is the only 76 yz I have.

I'm begging for an ignition setup for this bike! Really wanting to take dad to ill. for the vintage race in 2 weeks. I have all the missing pieces other than electronics.

If it were me I would contact Newmann about getting a new PVL. I think they have both analog and digital CDI`s for your Dad`s bike. I`ve had my share of elec. problems with vintage Yamaha`s over the years and probably would have saved a few bucks had I started using PVL`s sooner. It looks like the CDI Magneto Assembly model # for the "C" model is different than the "X" model on Bike Bandit`s website. Also, the model # is the same for the "X" as it is for the 77 &78YZ125`s. I noticed the "X" forks and canisters on the bike so I thought I would mention it. I think the stator mounting plate is 120mm but not 100% sure so if you swap parts from your inventory I would measure the mounting tabs on the case to make sure you have the correct diameter plate.
