I remember back in the day when Hannah came back from his broken leg. I was racing the amature day in 1980 I believe at Road Atlanta. We showed up on Sunday to watch the “men” race.

I remember watching Hannah racing without a seat! How many guys today would do the same? Few I would suspect.

I watched Marty Tripes on a Yamaha stop and take a beer from a fan.

The bottom line is that guys racing today are faster, but they have less heart than the past.

I really respect RC for his throw back dedication to the sport.

There are very few guys today that have the dedication, desire and commitment of the guys in the past.

So far, I only see Ryan Dungey and Dean Wilson with the same desire.

There may be others, but I’m keeping this simple.

Yep, there are other great guys, but few with the same heart.

For those of you who’ve been around, I know you know what I mean.

Today’s stars are much different. I respect RD and a few others. But most are of the new school Jlaw mentality.

I pray that our proud sport returns to those dedicated to the sport rather than those committed to their own self interests.

I remember Billy Liles pulling off a helmet cover as he smoked the amature classes that day. It was a few years later before he won his first national.

Billy was the sh^t back in the day as the first Team Green rider. I still remember when it was news that he beat Gary Semics in a "local race."

MACHINE,

I'm talking about heart, not the quality of the bike (machine). I remember races between Lies and Tinchenor that were classic.

Today, we have a lap or two that are intense.

In the past, we had lap after lap that were intense for the duration of the moto. Today, the competition gives up after a lap or two of intense pressure.

Hannah never layed down.

TODAY, WE GET A LAP OR TWO OF COMPETITION BEFORE SOMEONE BACKS OFF...

I'd like to go back to the day when riders fight to the end...

No, I simply implied he has the desire. Whining is something different! ha ha...

Lumpy,
You're right, Hannah would park you, never a whiner!

Barcia has the potential to be the "new" Hannah, but he's got to finish first!

I bet you walked to school uphill both ways when you were a kid aswell. Its really easy to look back at everything through rose coloured glasses and say it was better in my day and we were all tougher, the fact is you don't know what these guys put themselves through.

Do you think RV might not take a beer off a fan because he is that committed to this as a career that he knows that would only be detrimental to his performance and his image. Thats heart in my opinion.

And as for your example of riding without a seat. Craig Anderson did that only last year in an OZ mx round, and i have no doubt that any of the big name riders would do the same today.

Dude,

RV is the sh^t, no doubt. But very few would overcome the same issues guys overcame in the past.

I'm not knocking RV or anyone, but until they show it, it is only a guess on our part.

I can't think of anything recently where a rider has overcome what riders in the past have done.

With all due respect, I'll strongly disagree on this one. I think there are a bunch of dudes who train their ass off during the week and show up on Sunday to do battle, in both classes. In fact, I'll argue that for the most part, the training today is much much better b/c they know what they are doing and the science of sport has found its way into pro mx and sx. That wasn't so much the case "back in the day." Unless you trained with Jeff Spencer, guys just trained out of their ass without a great deal of knowledge. That isn't to say they didn't put a great deal of effort into their program-they did the best they could with what they knew.

But to say there haven't been any battles of late, I'd suggest watching the entire 2011 sx series in both classes, then watch the first two outdoor races, in both classes. Baggett at Hangtown? Fuckin awesome ride! Reed at Hangtown? Guy was a stud. Rattray at Freestone? The guy was an animal. Sorry-we haven't had it this good in a long, long time.

You kind of have me at a lost.

You are saying Marty Tripes stopping and taking a beer from a fan takes heart?

Its hard to say how many people would race without a seat today, then again how many did it back in the day?
I don't believe it was a common ordeal.

I can name tons of guys with determination, dedication and desire for the sport. Just because they aren't winning races doesn't mean they don't try their hardest. Ben Lamay works on his own bikes, drives to the races by himself, mechanics for himself and everything else. But he is not winning, in fact, he is outside the top 10. Does that mean he doesn't have heart and determination?

Where does RV fall on that list? TC, Tyla Rattray, Kevin Windham, Ben Lamay, Michael Byrne, Chad Reed, Mike Alessi, Eli Tomac and so forth?

I don't see how you can judge heart, or say who has it and who doesn't and how much a person puts in.

How about Craig coming back from a broken back, Millsaps is racing his best ever with only one kidney, Pourcel was paralysed and came back to win SX titles and nearly knock off both Dungey and Canard outdoors. Barcia won the SX title with a broken wrist. Even last week Cunningham nearly passed out after his first moto then came out and still finished 4th in the second. What about Weeks still has the heart to ride even though he is still getting around in a wheel chair. These are just a few examples off the top of my head most recently.

I still think you are looking back at the old days through rose coloured glasses and refusing to see that the guys today are atleast as commited to the sport and are definitely more professional. Its the professionalism that will push the sport forward, not the beer swilling red neckness that everyone seems to remember so fondly. They're athletes.

Bents,

I'd agree, we've had the best battles in some time. But, i'd say that today's battles are only reaching the battles we've had in the past.

I appreciate the new competition and hope there is more soon. This is the way it was back in the day and we need more of it.

I only hope to see it last more than a few laps..

The CZ team managers would make the team riders practice motos during the week without seats. Rolf Tiblin (sp?) might have had that in his training book, as well. Although hopping along the beach with a basketball between your knees was bad enough.

Jesus, has Motodrive just totally turned into an old bitter Drunk-Fest lately?

Just TRY and spend a day training or even keeping up with any current AMA pro racer and you will just shit your Depends and die on the spot, and you know it

This sport is so much goddamn tougher, MUCH more physical and tactical now than it was Back in the Day ( I know, I was there). Any kid who races at the highest level at this sport now has my utmost respect. and should have yours too.

What more do you want RV to show? Came back from the ACL to win a bunch of SX races the next season and then came back from a horrible injury last season to take one of the most hotly contested SX series ever.

If you're still waiting for him to "show" something, you need to simply start paying more attention.
