Hi all, new member here.
I'm having an issue getting the clutch to disengage on my 2005 Yz250 and can't figure out why. Problem: When the bike is running (in 1st gear) with the clutch lever pulled in, the transmission remains engaged causing the rear wheel to spin on the stand (otherwise it would stall on the ground).
The inner hub and basket are in good shape with minor wear. The clutch plates are brand new and soaked in 10W40 Yamaha oil before installation. Clutch free play is adjusted to spec. Visually inspected the push rod with no visible signs of wear. Also has brand new springs.
Please share your thoughts!
Have you tried to actually ride it?
I haven't. Got a bit spooked when I realized it was dragging and didn't want to cause any unnecessary wear.
I should also mention - I bought this bike in pretty rough shape and completely rebuilt it over the past year. Wasn't running at the time of purchase.
Try taking it for a spin, might just need a load on it.

The pressure plate and/or the basket are likely worn beyond limit.
^^ This ^^
Put the bike on the ground and try it, and report back to us.
Many times a bike will spin the back wheel a little bit on the stand even when it's in neutral (especially when cold). In theory every bike will have a slight amount of clutch drag, and it's going to be magnified on the stand. Until you try it on the ground, you don't even know if you have a problem or not.
^^^^^ What he said. ^^^^^
Just lock the rear wheel up with the brake, pull in the clutch, slip it in gear and see what happens. The plates need some resistance to break loose. I don't see anything that looks like it would cause an issue.
Will do. I’ll take it for a rip this week and report back.
Thanks all!
I've never owned a bike where it would run on the stand and not spin the wheel with the clutch in. Definitely take it for a spin and report back.
