Woodwork Question

I'm trying to get my mom and Dad's house ready to sell (I'm the Executor).  The front door and side light are Mahogany (I think).  It's a solid door and was very expensive when they bought it.  My dumbass brother, who lives there, put stain on it several years ago.  The door needs to be refinished.  Any suggestions on what I need to do to it?  Thanks!10000039191000003918

I'm no specialist but it looks like lots of albo grease to sand the door down and refurbish with Wooddoc coating.

The way the market is right now you could take the door off and leave the hole and people would still offer over asking price.

Not so much a woodworker question, as it is a finisher question.

No frikkin way in hell I'd take on a project like that.

You'll never get that properly prepped for a new finish.

Be cheaper, and get a better result by ripping the thing out and installing a new one.

I've had too many conversations with homeowners about projects like this.

It's the answer they don't want to hear.

I’d feel the same way. You’d be there for days trying to get back to bare wood in all the nooks and crannies. But the colour still wouldn’t be even, meaning that any new finish would be patchy.

You won't get any return for your hard work. Scuff it up and paint it is the most I would do.

Wood work that’s something I suck at. I would buy a huge Xmas ornament & hang it on the door. If a buyer notices the wood they won’t know nothing about it. And think it’s a easy project but it’s not. My 2 older sisters wanted to re do the flours in my dads farm house. I said sell it as is. The broker agreed

If it was mine, and given the situation, I’d just rub it down with some wire wool and recoat it with stain.

Like someone else said I would go for the quick prep/primer/paint. Hire it out to someone with a sprayer

This is a case where words like "vintage" and "rustic" must enter your vocabulary.

Have a painter take care of it if you are not handy. I would probably try a pressure washer first to get the heavy stuff off. If it's in a area where the house might sell with a Government loan program you will want to take care of it.

Yeah and it’s not about the door. It’s who’s at the door. And what happens behind closed doors.
