Weight Loss

Edited Date/Time 4/7/2025 3:29pm

Anyone else in here currently doing the weight loss and lifestyle change thing? Started myself about three weeks ago and was curious if anyone else would like to join in and follow along, maybe even get a small group of us to keep one another motivated and accountable?

Mr, ‘cuda. What method are you currently using?

4/4/2025 10:58am Edited Date/Time 4/4/2025 11:14am

Not sure what to call it, I guess high protein low to moderate carb and calorie counting combined. No junk food home cooked meal 3 times a day etc

The level of energy I have after just three weeks is a huge motivator!! It feels more like a change of habit than a diet, I’m down 15 lbs so far. I will likely start hitting some stationary bike rides here in the next week or so because I suspect I will be plateauing soon.

I don't know how much weight you have to lose, but losing 5lbs. a week is a lot.

Around the holidays I was up to 235 , the most I've ever weighed . I do a weigh in every Friday morning and today I was 209 .  My goal is 200 lbs . Give or take .  I did it by eating smaller portions , I no longer keep soda in the house , mainly drink water . I used to exercise regularly but fell off that wagon thus gaining the weight . I would like to get back to cardio but for now I take the dog for a walk every day and that has helped . I eat what I like . I love food so specialized diets are not for me . Life's too short .

I'm 58 btw .  Not anything ground breaking but this is something I can live with . I don't feel like I'm dieting .

I had a pretty similar weight drop years ago when I made some lifestyle changes including more conscious eating habits.

I've since gained most of that weight back, but I am feeling better than ever, and I'm probably in the best shape I've been since high school.

I'll try to keep up with your efforts, Bobby, and join in in my own way. I do need motivation to keep myself moving sometimes, so if you'll have me, I'll jump in this for the fitness aspect.

I'm in my more active portion of my year right now so I'm not doing a lot of at home workouts. I'm playing soccer once a week and I'm coaching a couple kids' teams 5 days a week. I'm trying to mix in more upper body workouts at home, but the soccer activity is more than enough to meet my fitness goals right now. Mid summer and winter are the times I struggle the most to get myself moving.

About half of it is likely water weight, I’m shokting for 2 a week once I kind of “stabilize” so to speak. Goal is to lose 70 lbs

I got an apple watch about 6 weeks ago for my birthday and it’s been a huge motivator and snowball effect! Also turning 32 I kind of said “yeah it’s time to get healthy and start racing again”

I am pretty close to my ideal weight but if I don’t show some discipline in my eating, before I know it I am up 10ibs or more.

I found an app that works great for me. It’s called “My fitness Pal” and it’s basically a calorie counter. I enter my body/age info and my goal weight and it allows me a certain guideline to meet/keep that goal. I’m currently in a 1,500 calorie target zone and believe me that is tough to do on a consistent basis if I’m not logging what’s going into my body. This particular app breaks down my carbs, fiber, sugar, fats etc and it allows me to keep track of my daily intake.
If it’s 7pm and I am up to 1,200 calories then I will cutback on my dinner choice and try to keep it around 300 calories.

I’m 65 years old and the added pounds will sneak up on me really quick nowadays

I found drinking Protein drinks like Pure Protein or Muscle Milk are a great way to fill me up if my calorie count is getting high on any given day. A protein drink on my way into work in the morning will get me through to lunchtime. 160 calories and 30 grams of protein is a great way to begin my workday.

I will add that I eat most anything I want, it’s the portions I keep small to help with my weight gain

I have that app as well it’s been a life saver! I’m currently at 1800-2000 cal a day

I'm also in the "eat pretty much anything, but keep the portions smaller" camp. I feel like it' easier to manage than avoiding things I want to eat. Cravings aren't so awful, etc.

Same here, and I make a conscientious effort to drink more water during the day, ride the emtb 3-4 times a week (usually about an hour to hour and 15 minutes) and not eat after 7pm.  I started "Trying" at the beginning of last year, I was a record high 222, now 16 months later I've been stuck at just over 200, (201-204) and I seem to be stuck there. Goal for me is 185, so call it 20 more pounds. My F'ed up back is giving me extra motivation but for whatever reason I haven't gotten to "One something" yet. 200.3 a few days ago, then faawk back to 204 a couple days later.

Ignore the Aldon Baker "Its a waste of time if you are not bicycling at least an hour or two" bullshit.

In Feb  2001 when I was 30 I lost 35 lbs by religiously riding my old 1990 Schwin mountain bike EVERY DAY NO MATTER WHAT on the bike path from the Rd 52 boat launch, up river to the I-182 bridge and over to Richland  and back in my best time of 38:15. I basically did a sprint getting my heart rate as high as possible. By Sep 1 i went from 200lbs to 165lbs and was in the best shape of my life. I got so good at managing my breathing and heart rate  without any fancy electronics. I just knew my body.

All that aside, beer, bread and sugar. Limit them.

Five pounds. Wow. One pound equals 3500 kalories. Five pounds = 17500 calories. Lots….

Stay away from sugar. Carbohydrates. Oranges, banana, cola, chocolate, takes long time to burn that sugar off. Eat more greens, and proteins.

Yeah there’s no way anyone could lose 15 lbs of pure fat in 3 weeks just by cutting calories and starches, however it’s pretty common to see a good amount of water weight come off the first few weeks

I needed to read that, thankyou.

I've let the whole "don't waste your time if you're not riding for an hour" stop me from jumping on my bike many time.

If Aldon spent this week running flooring with me, I'm not sure he would have an hour bike ride in him either. I'd like to take fitness advice from people who understand what it's like to work a full time job and train when you can.

When I got into my late 30's/early 40's my step son joined the cross country team in high school so I switched over to jogging. Again, I didn't run very far, a little over a 3 mile run every day after work, but I ran AS FAST AS I COULD, getting my heart rate as high as possible, managing my breathing. I wasn't super fast but it was basically a 22-24 minute run.

The jogging was actually better for MX riding then bicycling. I could ride sand whoops all day. My resting heart rate was very low and I could hold my breath under water for what seemed like a very long time.

The runners high is real! The mental clarity once your heart rate got back to normal 10 minutes or so later was great.

Of course now, in my mid 50's I'm terribly over weight and look like a harbor seal laying on a boat dock. 😒

I like to run way more than bike, but my left knee doesn't like it at all. I would run but it will affect me at work so I just cycle.

So I guess I'm going to shoot for getting on the spin bike even if I know I don't have an hour in me.

I see a lot of guys doing a ‘slow jog’ and am wondering if you’ve ever tried that? I actually can’t stand running and rarely run unless someone is chasing me. However, I might try that slow jog thing as it looks intriguing walk about 4 to 5 miles usually every day.

As heavy as I am now a slow jog would be all I could do, lol.

Gotta be honest, when i was jogging a lot and I would see young guys in their late teens or 20's doing a slow jog it would disgust me. Your young, get after it! Push yourself! Feel the pain! Conversely, sometimes i would see overweight women jogging , perhaps pushing a baby stroller as they ran. I would at the least give them a thumbs up or maybe even a "good job" with a smile. Gotta encourage each other right?

If you have access to a pool, swimming might be good for you.

Get your CDL then work for the 1099 Chicago Russian mob trucking company.s.  More physical than jackhammering , diet cold turkey sandwiches from flying j or a pilot with a kitchen. Little Debby brownies , Milky Way candy bars& a  hand full of caffeine pills.  I can’t pinch a cm of fat any where on my body & never could.  Being active doing something is the key to never putting weight on. If I,m off for injuries I then hv time.  I do super hyper speed sit-ups at 7pm I pig out b4 sleep at 1am.  Still u loose wt or get super cut in the gut.

Add some resistance training, really important as we age to help maintain bone density and muscle mass. Your body will change faster with strength training added to the program than cardio alone. Body weight strength training and yoga is great for joint mobility as well, as you increase range of motion you can start adding weight to the movements.

Last year went from 227 to 183. It was more of a “can I get to my goal” type of thing Goal was 180. Stopped drinking beer, road biked like a fool again, ate high protein. What was interesting I honestly never felt better at 183 vs 227 other than I slept eventually better. Mentally I liked tackling a goal but didn’t feel much different. Knees still hurt etc, Didn’t meet my goal and now back to the 200 range.

I have really bad knees and used to think I’d never be able to run or jog ever. A trick that helped me is using the treadmill full incline while jogging. Seems to help with pain. Maybe not for everyone.
