I have an 18' Silverado. There are squeak/creaking sounds coming from the rear end. I had the truck up and I believe it is coming from the leaf springs. Not sure if the shackles are bad or if replacing the inserts will fix this. Anyone have experience with this?
Happened to my neighbor. Ended up being the u joint. His only squeaked while in gear and moving.
Probably the bushings on the leaf springs. Newer semi trks wash out the steer pin spring bushings at 15k mi. Running the north east is hell On equipment . Up to 24% down hill grades with extremely sharp curves tweek- bend & fatigue the steer springs. Do you pull a trailer ? If so newer pick ups r made very cheap. Depending on the size & weight of the trailer. It’s a good idea to replace all the suspension every 2 -3 yrs.
U joints will squeak before they go bad ,easy enough to check. Make sure you block the wheels when pulling the drive shaft off the rear end.
my Silverado was a little older but one of the leaf spring plates/shims cracked where the pin goes. you couldn't tell by looking at it until you took it apart...

I only hauled a handful of times, nothing crazy maybe a few thousand pounds at a time at most.
I have fox 2.0's just waiting to put them on. I wanted to try to fix this issue while I am under replacing the shocks.
If u replace the u joints at each end of the shaft make sure you orient the yokes back the same way , that’s how it was balanced and could be out if u turn one 180
And while you have the shaft out of the tranny, grease the piss out of the spline, inside and out.
Mine started clunking like a U-joint, but it was a dry spline.
I don't feel any clunking while in gear. I think something got dried out, I was leaning towards the bushings on the leafs.
It’s a Chevy, really, what did you expect?

I learned this the hard way when I did my motorhome.
Just spray wd40 into the gap on the bushing. That might stop the sqeeking. When I was 23 I test drove a 76 elcamino . The owner rode along . I said I can feel the rear end moving. He said I don’t feel nothing. He pulled a camper with it. I didn’t even get 2k miles on it & the rear end was done . I changed it outside in 8 in of snow, it was a bitch. Up north a 5 yr old trk has a lot of rust on suspension. Have to torch the bolts off. Getting the leaf springs bolted back together is a little tricky. But it can be done. You know how it is once you get it apart. Do you just replace the bushing or the spring pack to ?
This was a common problem on GM and ford (same leaf spring manufacturer). GM’s bulletin had you replace the plastic shim pads in the leaf pack. If you wedge a screw driver in between the leafs and floss a rag through them cleaning and some spray lube will take care of the problem for a while until dirt builds up again.
Not saying that's your problem, just saying that if you replace U-joints do this while you're at it.
It's a preventative thing.
I had the same problem as the OP and spreading the leaves, cleaning and silicone spray worked. It eventually comes back and you need to repeat the process. About a year ago I ended up adding some additional acetal sliders, so far so good. I made mine, but there is a company out there that sells them. I'll post it if I can remember the name.
But Muttly, those Chevy's are as American as apple pie !!! Not like those damn Toyota's----
Government Motors, welfare queens. 🤠
Chevy has been selling cars disguised as pickups for over 20 years now.
Sure, they ride nice and look pretty but if you use it like an actual pickup is meant to be used i.e. rough roads, hauling heavy shit, putting it in 4wd....they fall apart quick.
Pointless update.. I took the leafs off, sanded and replaced the inserts. Noise is gone. A few of you called this! Thank you. Hopefully this helps someone in the future.
