Another icon from youth.

Makes me wonder if he’ll be elected to the HOF posthumously.

Man, what a rough week.....

Charlie Hustle one of the greatest baseball players in history. What a shame the Hall of Fame never let him in.

Just like the AMA screwed over James Stewart, by keeping him in limbo (without a firm date of a suspension) that ultimately ended his career. But at least they came to their senses and let him in the Hall of Fame.

And now, one of the greatest ambassadors to the game of basketball also has died. He did tremendous things for his home country of Africa and was quite the humanitarian..

Ya know…

I’m never gonna understand how these stick and ball HOFs live with themselves. Too often they allow themselves to think these people aren’t human. They love to build these people up just to tear them down.

Meh…ignore me. Hell, I’m on the wrong side of some of this by the standards of many…I don’t get how everyone looked the other way when Bonds was getting huge…knockin’ the skin of the ball…and then…”Oh, the horror! He’s on steroids!” So, you can say there’s a lot of this that I just don’t get.

Then there’s Pete…Pete got caught. Then they made an example of him. It’s just like Bonds…seems to me they make examples of certain people and look the other way with sooooooo many other people and in other nastier situations.

As usual, I digress..

Like I said, ignore me. I think it’s all a bunch of hypocritical bullshit.

For me, Pete was a bad ass and a heroic athlete. PERIOD. The rest of it…? He fucked up. And we watched him get continuously crucified for it.

RIP, Good Sir…you were a true legend and I’m pretty damn sure that you were the last to play virtually every damn position short of pitcher.

I’m probably the other way on Rose. I’d probably be less against him being banned if he hadn’t bet on his own games, but he did. He made those bets knowing full well the ramifications of his actions.

The Juice Crew is a little bit different, but I’m okay with the writers keeping them out. The difficult part of that era was that the products used were evolving faster than conclusive testing, and even though most of us thought we ‘knew’ some of the guys were going crazy with substances, it wasn’t provable the way it needed to be. Once the detection methods sort of caught up, we got more aggressive enforcement (like ARod being banned for a season for testing hot) then things got a little bit more reasonable but I’m sure that there’s still some mad scientists out there pushing the envelope with new substances.

I suppose I’d not be bothered if the Baseball Writers said that the waiting time for banned players was 5 years after death, but it really won’t bother me either way.

No matter what, I’m glad I was born when I did because Rose was one of the most exciting players I’ve ever seen and it was fantastic seeing his games as they happened.

Shocking. Nobody can question the example he set on the field. Played at 💯 every single day. Likely that he will always be the Hit King.

My opinion, for what it’s worth, would be different if he didn’t always bet on his team to win.

Straight shit that man didn’t get to live to be in the hall of fame. Yeah he did something stupid, but that doesn’t take away his accolades or accomplishments which were mighty as a player. Baseball sucks these days

As long as Robert Manfred is commissioner of MLB, Pete Rose will unfortunately not be inducted into the hall of fame.

I really hope he will be in the HOF someday.

Too bad he's gone. Baseball HOF is no more important to me than Emmy or Academy. I really don't give a fuck who they think deserves their praise . Include the goofy fucks at Nobel or any of them really.

I was sitting in the dugout seats at Dodger stadium with my brother when they played the Reds  one time. Pete was player manager. In the dugout seats you are literally 5 feet away from the on deck batter. Pete was on deck. On one knee, chin on his bat and my brother was calling him every kind of slur you could think of. From 5 feet away. Pete never looked at him. Probably went up and slapped a single and then stretched to two with a belly slide. Closest thing to Ty Cobb ever in modern era.

Incredible Baseball player, Incredibly shitty human being.

In defense of him, you'd be a little red assed if you went through everything that MLB put him through.

MLB did him a solid when they agreed to stop the investigation into the extent of his gambling activities in exchange for a lifetime ban. He was an addict that bet with bookies with known ties to organized crime, it was only a matter of time before he owed someone a favor. The lifetime ban, that he agreed to, saved him from himself and possibly from others.

That being said I'm on the side of including him in the HOF, but with an acknowledgment and explanation of his lifetime ban in addition to his on-field achievements. I would also include the steroid-era players that juiced prior to steroids actually being banned in MLB (2005?).

This has to be the longest standing ovation I've ever seen. 😲

Owner Marge Schott came down from the stands to congratulate Pete as well as his teammates and even players of the Padres.

The pitcher who gave up the hit, just sat on the mound, as he knew it was gonna be be a long ceremony and he would be forever linked in the record books to Pete. 😃

Then they drove out a brand new red Corvette that they gave him and also Pete Jr. came out to hug and congratulate his Dad of a record that will never be broken-4256 hits!

Pete and RC had similar personalities in the fact they were more driven than anyone in their sport to succeed, and they did.

I remember watching it with my great grandma. September 11 was the day that he became the “Hit King” up until it became known for the attacks. On the field, you could not find a better example. He had incredible hand eye coordination, like any MLB hitter, but was not athletically gifted otherwise. I can’t think of an athlete that has done more with less. Bird might be close. Incredibly intense, tenacious competitor.

There was a time when I thought that Ichiro might have been drastically better than Rose if he had not started MLB when he was 27, but a few years back I saw some stats that really surprised me.  I went back and looked at their 'peak' years, and while there are areas where Ichiro did shine, I think that Rose really did outhit him overall.  Defense and stolen bases may have swayed me to pick Ichiro over Rose if I were to start an "all-time/what if?" sort of team, but it would be far closer than I thought it would be when I was able to watch Ichiro play.  I used their age 27 through 40 seasons, as those were the ones where they played most of the games in a season, etc.  I knew that Ichiro didn't take enough walks, but I really didn't think that his OBP was nearly 30 points behind Rose's.  Rose may have played with some better teams and had some 'protection' with better hitters in the lineup most seasons, but that would only account for a portion of the difference.

I wonder if he bet on himself in the death pool?

He had faults just like anyone else, but that’s awful to say.

What happened to this place?! One day it's "fuck your feelings" and the next it's "Don't make jokes about Pete Rose"?!

"I wonder if he bet on himself in the death pool" is a great joke.

His last interview, you can see in his eyes and listening to him how bad he really wanted for baseball to give him a second chance and allow him in the Hall of Fame while he was still alive. What a shame they wouldn't....🙄

I also forgot about that they completely banned him from ballparks, clubhouses, etc, what a bunch of bullshit.....

I think it’s a pretty ignorant joke. I’m assuming most would.

If nothing else it's rude to the people in a thread made for expressing condolences. The shorthand version is someone saying, "bummed this guy died" and then someone coming in and saying, "haha!". That part isn't very polite.

Google feed keeps bringing up some Pete Rose stuff. When he was on David Letterman, this is a good one and Dave pesters him about "prison life" Pete has some good wit about him, especially when he called David "Johnny" at the end. 😂

I miss Letterman a lot, once he retired I never watched late night talk shows ever again as they suck and got political bs....

Technically, the joke is the opposite of ignorant since you have to know something about the guy to make that joke.

That said – if you don't like the joke then ignore it, it clearly wasn't meant for you.

Look how much you're derailing this thread when you could have just not replied to the joke in the first place.

Show some respect for the deceased.

I actually think that Rose might have been able to eventually get reinstated if he would have been honest earlier. But he was very adamant about not ever betting on baseball, all the way until they had concrete evidence and he fessed up to it. Then he changed the focus to the angle that he never bet on a team he was involved with, until that was also disproven and he fessed us. Then his story was that he shouldn’t be banned because he never bet AGAINST his team, but with his past history of fervently denying things that were later proven, it’s hard to know if even that is truthful.

I can see him being inducted now, though, but with plenty of qualifiers about why he was banned for so long.

100%, and they basically told him as much. He was so loved and was so good that they wanted to let him in, they just needed something from him and he wouldn't give it. Pride is a real bear and it's sad that he passed before he was able to redeem himself and, even if he gets in posthumously, isn't around to enjoy it.
