This was not a freak accident. It was a straight up murder. I'll not post the video but I'll never unsee it.
Very sad.
But how do we know it wasn't an accident?
I saw the video. Unfortunately. It's out there if you want to see it.
Petgrave does not help his case by having the most PIM's on the team and having been tossed from two of his last four games, once for spearing and the other for abuse of officials. Sounds a wee bit temperamental and impetuous.
So you're saying you think he deliberately slashed him with his skate ? I haven't seen the video.
Anything is possible.
I watched the vid. Unless it was in the begining of the game its hard to get a feeling for the game and what his intentions were.
But coming from a lifelong (Im 62) hockey player, it looked to be an accident
Most amateur leagues require the use of neck guards. Most all goaltenders wear neck guards.
I have never worn a neck guard but I am going to Pure Hockey store and getting one.
Also playing in England is the bottom of the barrel for players nearing the end if their career. I just spoke to a guy that played there and is back in the ECHL.
An English ice hockey team have made neck guards mandatory for all of their players and coaches following Adam Johnson's tragic death at the age of 29 on Saturday.

Anybody else get a malicious website warning when clicking that link?
That's a bad freaking deal all around.
Minnesota youth has some hockey associations require neck gaurds.
Malicious website is hilarious considering it's the NHL's own website.
Having slept on it and got over the initial shock, and having played a fair bit, skated even more, and watched yet more hockey over the years, I have never, ever seen a skate come up like that because "oh shit, lost my balance." I don't think he really meant to kill the guy. I don't think he was thinking at all. That looks like someone who's not thinking, just reacting. Which makes it at best an extremely reckless move. The trouble is, now you have a weapon involved. And someone who's record would indicate he does a fair bit of not thinking, just reacting. And someone that should have skated off the ice and went home that night, never skating off again.
Yes, you're right on the malicious thing. Which was why I asked. I just tried again and it loaded ok. So who knows.
Can't comment on the rest, as I didn't see the vid and at this point I don't think I want to either. I've played some hockey too, and just even momentarily thinking about this makes me wince and grimace big time. But I've seen feet and the skates attached to them do some pretty wild moves just during regular play. It's a wonder major cut incidents don't happen more often. Especially with how fast the game is.
He made contact with another player which upended him and the poor guy who died looked like he was just moving down into the skate. Ive seen many guys fall onto skate blades but this was just an accident.
No one intends to cut another player...ever. Now a stick is a totally different matter.
Didn’t something like this incident happen to a goalie during an NHL game awhile back ? Not with the same horrible outcome, but quite serious and graphically scary. The game of hockey is incredibly fast and furious, and these dudes are hitting each other moving at 30 mph , often head on collisions that would make NFL players go home crying. I grew up when helmets were not even required, and growing up in Boston, I distinctly remember the Teddy Green incident, and that was beyond scary. This is 10 times worse. Rest In Peace Adam !
Ted Green was injured by Wayne Maki in a stick fight where he had brain damage from it. I remember meeting him when he played for the WHA New England Whalers thereafter. TOTALLY different matter
Mr.Ohio, you are correct in that it was not a cut incident. I was referring to the scary follow up with Teddy, he was never the same again, though he did come back to play a bit more.
He also started the trend of helmet wearing in the NHL. I was definitely not saying the two incidents were comparable, just that both were very traumatic . I also went to many Whaler games because I could not afford Big Bad Bruins tickets. Always good to chat with a Hockey Fan, not too many of them here in the Houston area.
Clint Malarchuk is the goalie you're thinking of. Buffalo Sabres goalie.
As for what happened to Adam Johnson, I didn't want to see the video, but it ended up on my TL. Anyone saying there was any intent there has never played hockey and doesn't understand the speed the game is played at. It was 100% accidental. Shouldn't even be a conversation.
I wear an undershirt with kevlar in the neck when I play goalie, after this I think I'll be wearing it when i play out too. Terrible reminder of how dangerous the sport can be.

Edit* fair enough. it may have been a freak accident
Seriously dude, shut up. You have absolutely no idea how fast things happen in hockey. So many people who have less than zero knowledge of the sport talking like experts.
He leads the team in PIMs because he's an enforcer. Spearing is not uncommon in hockey, its a dirty play, but literally any poking motion with the stick is called for it, regardless of severity. it usually happens when the refs stop players from fighting but don't get them far enough apart, sticks have a longer reach. Corey Perry and Brad Marchand do that shit all the time in the NHL. Abuse of the officials is much more common, say the wrong thing to a ref and you're gone. I see it at least once a month in goddamn beer league. Neither are any sort of evidence that a player would try to slash someone's throat. Don't be stupid.
Respect even tho you are a goalie blocking my net...
I wear a neck guard when I play and made the kids wear them too.
Nothing beats hearing a string of obscenities when you take a sure goal away from someone!

Guy is devastated at what happened and people are acting like it was done on purpose. He’s getting death threats and all kinds of racist BS thrown at him now.

Great, now because of this I’ve had to watch the video back multiple times to see exactly what happened.
- Johnson is carrying the puck up ice along the wing, he’s got a teammate ahead of him, Petgrave is back checking near the middle
Petgrave starts cutting towards Johnson and bends his knees, preparing to catch Johnson with a hit at or just inside the blue line.
Johnson’s teammate moves towards the middle, cutting to the other side of the net to be open for a pass or a rebound. At this point, Petgrave doesn’t see it. He’s focused on Johnson. Johnson’s teammate and Petgrave are moving in opposite directions and Petgrave gets caught up high, his upper body goes one way, his feet the other, this makes his feet come up. Similar to the hit at 2:00 here, but at higher speed. Petgrave was lucky this collision didn’t end up with him hurt.
Johnson cuts to the middle with the puck at the same time this collision happens. We all know what happened after that.
So many little things had to happen at exactly the wrong time for this to happen. It was a horrible thing, absolutely awful, but nobody is at fault here. If anything the general lack of neck guard use by hockey players in general is to blame. For some reason in hockey, the less equipment you wear, the better. Face protection, neck guards, ear guards, and at the recreational level, even shoulder pads will get you ridiculed by other players. I expect that’s going to change soon, one NHLer almost lost an eye getting hit with a skate last week, and now this.
Anyone saying this was intentional simply doesn’t understand hockey or is reaching for a narrative.
I just watched the video. That karate chop kick to the neck was 1000% intentional. Obviously his intentions were not to kill him, but unfortunately that's what happened and now he has to deal with the repercussions. I'm not reaching for a narrative and I don't care about the color of their skin, but that kick was completely intentional and no mistake. He just wanted to take him down, and ended up accidentally killing him. I used to play hockey as well.
If you used to play hockey and think that any part of that was intentional I assume you had to quit because of multiple cranial impacts sans helmet.
It was intentional, 100%. Death was not the intended result, but unfortunately it happened. There are thousands of "hockey people" who disagree with you, it's okay to disagree.
Maybe go back and read the breakdown and watch the videos, it’s not uncommon when you have an impact that rotates your body to have a foot come up. Happens all the time.
Maybe you just don't know how to skate, it's okay.
My guy I have played hockey for damn near 30 years. Travel, Rep, All Ontario Finals, Silver Stick, all of it. I’ve played with, and still play with, OHL, AHL and former NHL players. I have played and can play every position on the ice including goalie, and play them all well.
i grew up on the ice, every single winter.
I’ve forgotten more about hockey and skating than you will ever know.
A thread about a guy being killed during a hockey game degrading into trivial juvenile arguing .
Tends to happen when people take a tragic accident and try to twist it into a malicious murder because the political talking heads they follow told them to.
Sean Avery and some other former pros are of the same opinion as BDB. Nobody thinks the result was intentional, but whether he intended to contact Johnson with the kick seems very much up for debate. Terrible deal all around.
YOU and some others here belong on monkey island at the zoo. There you can fling your poo at each other while the rest of us watch and laugh.
