Id like to hear peoples opinions on which bike they believe is a better training bike between a 125 and 250 2 stroke to make them a better rider on there 4 stroke. Talking purely moto and not concerned about the maintenance side of things just the actual riding. Thanks
Yes.
My opinion based on owning and racing 125, 250, 500 and now a 350F.
I think once you've learned to ride a 125 really well, you can learn more from the 250 as a practice or play bike.
The 125 teaches you to carry speed through corners and to be efficient.
You can go really fast on a 250 but it's more difficult than a four stroke. If you have the 125 skills in the bank, practicing on the 250 two stroke will allow you to get on a 250F, 350F or 450F and go faster with less effort than the two stroke.
If all I ride/race is the 125 I feel like I can't use what a 350F or 450F has to offer. I don't get that feeling when I've been riding the 250 two stroke frequently.
125 All. The. Way.
Flow. Momentum.
Riding a 125 is a waste of time. Theyre barely any faster than an 85. The point of MX is to go as fast around a track as you can. Do your kid a favor and get him a 250F. People want 125s because they think theyre cool. I fell into that myself. I wish i had got a 250 waaay sooner.

everyone should spend a year on a 125, they teach you big bike handling with out the torque to get you into trouble,
250 two stroke. Don't mess with 450s anymore.
The one that you ride the most.
I think 250 2 strokes are way underrated.
They are a perfect Goldilocks bike which can be very versatile. Yes each bike will need to be ridden differently to get the most out of them, but ultimately I think a 250 is best of all worlds.
Anyone see the 17 year old kid on a cr 250 catching Searle on his kxf 250 last wk end ?
You want to be a better rider on a 4-stroke? Get practicing on a 4-stroke.
I've been riding 2-strokes since 1983 and I can't ride a thumper to save my life. There is nothing about riding a fast, agile, pipey smoker that will prepare you for a heavy, torquey, gyroscopic monster like a 4-stroke. They are two very different beasts.
EDIT: That said, you should ride a 125 to learn the lessons of momentum, line choice, and intensity. Those lessons won't help you with the skills you'll need on a 4-stroke but you can at least apply them to the equation.
Why, if they are barely faster than an 85cc, in my day, which I will grant you was a L O N G time ago, were the fastest lap times of the day (and every day) put in by 125cc riders? Yes faster times than both the 250's and the 500's.

If you want to go faster on your 450, ride your 450, simple as that.
