Thanks soggy. I just spoke with Jeff from MT and he also told me Wiseco is fine to use. Much appreciated.
Man, they sure have gotten proud of replating - I can buy a whole new OEM jug for my CRF250X for less than they want to recondition it, which means it just became a disposable item. Why repair when replacement is cheaper?
Seems like it wasn't too many years ago I wasn't paying much over $200 to have a 2-stroke done (just replating, no piston, etc.).
My thinking was the same. I found some used jugs between $150-$300 but figured I’d be right back where I am now. What do you do?
He’s comparing a 450 jug which is much simpler than the 2 stroke. It makes sense to replate a 2 stroke cylinder most of the time imo.

Don't know. They used to be reasonable, but I guess since the OEM's want so much for a new 2-stroke jug (if you can even get some of the discontinued models) they have you over a barrel . Also seems like there are fewer options nowadays - pretty sure Langcourt in the US is gone, maybe others - so a lack of competition isn't good for the consumer.
I don't have any personal experience with them but I've heard positive reviews on the Tusk YZ250 cylinders for $340 while Yamaha OEM jugs list for over $800. Heck, even Cylinder Works has a complete kit (jug, Vertex piston kit, gaskets) for around $560.
Here's mine off my 125. Never have done a top end so I don't know what I'm looking for. I took it to a local shop and they said they'll try to hone if not a replate will be in order?
That will run, not nearly as bad as the other guys.
Looks like the plating might be worn off on the intake side around 7oclock in that picture. Hard to tell could be shadow.
I believe that those years of kx250 stock cylinders had an "electrofusion" coating....not "nikasil" or "plated"....they would wear out extremely fast if an intense maintenance routine wasn't followed. Your cylinder looks better than most you would find in our current times....for the year of that bike. If you are keeping the bike and looking to put lots of hours on it...I would recommend getting it plated with nickel silicone carbide (nikasil) like every other bike manufactured after 1989....and fit any piston you want with a nice tight tolerance. Keep a nice serviced air filter in it at all times and beat that thing.
This was timely - saw it on MXA today. Looks like it's been a minute since they priced the service since it's now 60% more than what they listed!
Gotta love a well-researched piece that obviously wasn't just cut and pasted from years ago to be filler.
I wonder how long ago that was. Does make me feel better about deciding to replate though. I’ll post some pictures here once I get it back from MT.
It doesn't have the original publication date but it would have to be after 2015 based on the model year of the bike. Everything went nuts during Covid and the free-money period that added more fuel to the inflation fire, but a 60% increase is hard to swallow.
For anyone that’s interested, got my jug back from MT. Here’s the motor put back together.
