17-18 Honda Crf450r Vortex Ecu Running Rough

Hello guys, I recently bought a brand new Vortex ignition of the forum. The Vortex originally came from Tokyo Mods. My bike is running rough and pops like it’s lean when slowly rolling on the throttle (up until about 1/4 throttle), but revs out clean and fast. I have played with every single map and adjusted the fuel dials leaner and richer to see if the popping goes away, it did not help or change it at all. Even at one point the idle knob did not have any effect on the idle speed up or down.

I got ahold of Tokyo mods, and they said it sounds like the TPS isn’t calibrated. I have already did the “TPS calibration procedure” when I first put it on the bike. (Hold kill switch, kick it over, release. Then wide open throttle, hold kill switch, kick it over, release). Could it possibly mean I need to calibrate the actual TPS on the throttle body?

I put the stock ecu back on after putting about 30mins on the Vortex messing with it trying to get the popping to go away and it runs as it should with the stock ecu. I am starting to wonder if the Vortex is a faulty one (haven’t really ever heard of them being faulty but maybe one of you guys have had this experience).

It’s just a stock engine with FMF dual system and I run half and half 93 pump with VP110.

If any of you guys have ever had this issue happen with a Vortex ecu and figured out what was causing it, please chime in on what I should try doing to fix it please!!

Thanks, Tyler

I would make sure your tps sensor is correctly set to begin with regardless of what ecu you want to run. Maybe have tokyo mods do some work on the vortex one.

I bought a vortex from Tokyo mods and my bike ran off as well. I tried talking to them and they said I had my timing wrong and to get someone that knows what they're doing. Anyways I laughed and got my bike dynoed and tuned properly. Went from 58 to 63.5 hp and runs good. It was lean with the max hp map that came standard.

I’ve had several similar experiences with Tokyo mods on several different bikes... their answer was Always your timings off, your tps is wrong, or your valves are tight... no ill will towards them, but every situation was fixed by having the bike remapped... agree with what’s said here only way to properly map any type of efi is on a dyno...

Kind of what I was beginning to think. Didn’t want to throw a company under the bus without knowing other people have had similar issues. Thanks for the input though with your guys past experiences. It was kind of clear when I emailed them they wanted to point at it being the TPS was calibrated wrong with the Vortex, then I replied back stating it was done correctly with the steps provided, what else could it be causing the issue. Now they haven’t replied back in 3 days now or any willingness to help point me to what it could be causing the issue. Probably going to just send it off to one of the respectful engine builders in the Mx/Sx world to get it completely remapped.

Thanks, Tyler
