powder coating ?

does anyone have any experience with powder coating rims and hubs? does it look good and is it durable? Most importantly is it worth the time and money or should i just buy some wheels from dubya or warp 9?

I wouldn't do rims but hubs would be fine.

clean, primer and Krylon paint for the hubs. Its not like hubs are a high wear item. I painted my frame too.

I powder coated this valve cover last night. Hubs would be fine. Don't do the rims. They'll chip.

I'm looking forward to getting in some wrinkle red powder as well.

I do my own powder coating but I tell people all the time...If you are PCing or lacing and truing the rims yourself it can be worth it. But if you are paying someone to do those things it is a waist of money. It'll cost you near $400...You can get a set of tusk wheels for ~550 and you'd have an extra set of wheels...

WileCyot, I used the wrinkle on the rim. That powder is by FAR the most durable I have ever used. I probably put ~50hrs on the rim before rim scrub started to show on the rear.



shocker yellow over any kinda green or silver looks super sick too.

Is that over a chrome base? I have some anodized blue and red that if you spray it over a chrome base it gives a frosted look similar to that

I did both my rims and hubs, here they are after a season and a lot of pulling tires on and off. Use lots of soap and water and be delicate and they last. Hubs are good for sure.

When I get space PCing is on my list of at home projects.

I am thinking (possibly wrong) that PC would add significant weight to the rim, which is rotating, unsprung weight. (bad). Have you guys weighed a rim before/after PC? ANodize shouldnt have much effect.

Anodizing will not increase the weight of rims. That close to the axis of rotation, hub, it will be neglegable. I would worry more about sprung weight.

I have never weighed the rims before and after because it is almost nothing. I could powder coat 10 rims with one pound of powder...and keep in mind the majority of that does not get applied to the rim, it falls to the ground.

Yeah, good point. I have just heard horror stories about powder coated frames being 5 lbs heavier than painted ones. I think it might just be an MXA-ism.

When I get space PCing is on my list of at home projects.
I use a spectra coat system. I think it was like $800. For an oven, you can start off using an old house hold oven but you'll soon want to build your own and just use the guts from old home ovens.

The hardest part of PCing is controling the environment you are spraying in, ANY dust in the air and it'll fk up the powder coat. Having a dry air supply is equally important. If your compressor is on very much it will create condensation very quickly and ruin whatever you are spraying.

Those tusk wheels are cheap. And by cheap I mean shit. Broke 5 spokes out of mine in less than 3 rides. Aluminum nips, stock size spokes, cheap alloy rims. Hubs appear to be okay but I made the mistake and tried to save some cash vs. Dubya or A60's on the stock hubs and payed the price.

First I've heard of anyone having problems with them...but I haven't been looking either.

If it makes you feel any better SMPRO just dropped the price on their Platinum wheel set to $875. I haven't had any problems out of mine, but I check spoke tightness regularly
