So I traded a guy my 06 CRF450 for the bike below. The bike is so new/clean that it doesn't even have scratches on the bottom of the frame. I have a couple questions for the experts. List of parts for clarification. PC Pipe and silencer, V force reeds 10oz flywheel weight. Everything else in the motor is stock as far as I have been told.
1. Do these need race gas? I ask because my 03 detonated bad
2. How is the stock jetting?
3. Any quirks that need to be addressed?
4. It has TRU suspension mods. Has anyone heard of them?

Thanks in advance

I'll trade my grandpa's riding mower for a bitchin RM like that! How much is the bounty for the armed robbery you pulled off? Is rape legal in Temecula? Now you know how big-wigs on Wall St. feel. You should teach us the way of your Jedi mind tricks. Did you F his wife too?

I think you get what I'm trying to say, buddy!

I thought that I was going to have to do some serious selling to get it done but the guy wanted a CRF just like his brothers. Mine was in really good shape with excellent suspension and a recently gone through motor. I didn't know how clean this RM really was until I got it home and tipped it over for my buddy to check the frame. There isn't even a mark or scratch on the bottom. After the beating I took buying what turned out to be a stolen 05 YZ250, I guess the karma police squared me back up. I can't wait to ride this thing.

You guys don't even want to hear about the spares that it came with. I should go buy a lottery ticket.

Race gas not needed, but highly recommended!! Try VP 110 and jet accordingly. You will be amazed how much cleaner it revs.

I would take that flywheel weight off. The stock engine runs pretty smooth without an arm-jerking hit. The flywheel weight is going to make the engine feel dull if you are riding mx.

Other than that they handle great and are a blast to ride. About the only thing I ever did to my 06 as far as suspension was get the proper spring rates for my weight and then I tuned the bike with race sag and fork heights.

Never sell this bike you just got. If you do, you will regret it, trust me. I sold mine about a year ago and would love to have it back!

Unrelated to the OP, what is the process of getting the proper spring rates for my weight?

Go to the Racetech.com and use the spring rate calculator.

I'm running Avgas 100LL in my 05 CR250. Pump gas is just so crappy with all the clean air additives. It is a little more work but at $5.90'gal it's worth it. I usually get it at private airports.

Yes, your spring rate is different than your the clickers. Once you have new springs in, you may want to adjust the clickers. If you aren't over 170# you should be OK on stockers. You could also find take off springs from a RMZ450. The suspension should the same but have heavier springs.

We do a lot of RM250 work. They are awesome bikes that can be tailored for just about any type of riding.

From my prior experience here are my answers to your questions:

1.) YES you need atleast a 50/50 blend of race fuel. These bikes were built to run 94-96 octane non ethanol gas. You cannot get that at any pump I know of. Any RM250 I have ever taken apart that runs pump gas usually has major detonation damage on the outer edge of the combustion chamber and on top of the cylinder.

ALSO my experience differs with MXTECH1's recommendation for VP110. Between the C12 and vp110 I would choose the c12 in this application.

2.)Stock jetting is so/so. Definitely need atleast one size larger main jet if you are going to try to run pump gas, which I would advise not to. Jetting where you are could very well be totally different from where I am.

3.)The rear brake pedal springs always seem to go missing on these bikes. If you bend the hook ends of the spring to be closed a bit more, they usually stick around a bit longer.

4.) I don't know anything about "Tru" suspension. I have had excellent luck with Factory Connection and feel they are the best choice for suspension work.

Awesome trade on the bike! That thing really looks clean. Hope you have a blast!

From what I've read the 06 was the best out of all the RM 250.

Nice, welcome to the club.... Cool

I run 100 pump gas from a local 76 Station and 927 at 32-1. Runs clean, strong and no spooge out the back..
- pc pipe and 304 silencer
-V3 reeds
-will corner inside like crazy, builds confidence

* I got mine for 2K- low hrs. About $500 more, almost a new bike. Revalve, added RMZ front plate and fender, and new rm plastics. Graphics, and OEM top-end and clutch pack.

** Now I use my RMZ for site laps while the track is wet

Stockton & Modesto are the closest to me-- about 8-15 mi away (depends on where I'm riding/racing)
--- since I only need 1-3 gal at a time.

OCHS Oil in Vista has 100 octane street gas at the pump 24/7. It was $8 last time I bought it.

Can't believe you guys are spending that much $$ per gallon on a high octane pump fuel. In most cases, you can run application specific VP fuel for the not much more. I just picked up 5 gal pails of VP U4.4 and VP MRX02 for $60 each.

Fuccked up fuel taxes in California. I'll stick with 100LL Avgas, under $6'gallon.

mxtech1 how are you getting those prices? You must be real close to a VP warehouse or those were leftover cans that the place you bought them couldn't get rid of. My cost on a pale of u4.4 is over $80 and I am a dealer

I buy from a local automotive speed shop. I was talking to one of the emplyees and I guess they get a pretty good dealer price on all their VP fuel because they buy such large quantities. They mostly specialize in dirt track stock car and drag racing fuels, which those guys are usually buying mutliple 55 gallon drums at a time, but they seem to move large quantities.

With the fuel tax, the $60 5 gallon pail comes out to just a hair over $70.

The 06 RM250 is a great bike & there are plenty of easy mods that you can do to it to make it into a great mx bike & that will make it competitive with any the modern 450 4 strokes. I definitely disagree with mxtech1 about taking off the flywheel weight off of it.
* deck the cylinder .030
* set the squish to .045
* run the Weisco racers Choice 808 YZ250 piston in it.
* Run the biggest the flywheel weight you can find & you won't be sorry either. ( I had a 14oz & 16oz ones on my 07 RM250)
* Race gas is a MUST even without cylinder & head work.
* I had very good luck with the stock pipe & a shortened PC silencer. (I had very good luck with the Scalvini pipe too, it revved at lot higher than stock or my PC pipe)
* I have all the jetting specs that worked for me if you need them. I'm in New England & at sea level so mine may not work for you.

I have an '08 RM 250 that I bought new. It was hard to get but I got it. Put a V force reed and a PC pipe and silencer on it . It's jetted properly, and we always ran premium pump gas in it. Ran great, never a problem, and my son rips on that thing. He'll holeshot any 450 on it. I have changed the piston several times, but no head damage from detonation. Always clean as can be. The YZ125 however, requires a higher octane fuel. If you run pump gas in them, the spark plug tip will burn off and cause considerable damage. You're ok with pump gas in the '06 RM250. It won't cause any problems, unless it's been modified and is a high compression motor. In that case you would need higher octane fuel. Otherwise just fill it up on the corner and go have fun.

Digger, Thanks for the advice. You definatly have some of the best RM250's that I have seen. I ran the bike this weekend and it seemed to be jetted pretty good but if you could send me those specs, I would appreciate it. I will deck the cylinder and cut the head when I do a piston. How have Wiseco pistons treated you? Years ago, we built a lot of motors, as in from the ground up our design, and never had much luck with Wiseco. Right now, my focus is on getting the suspension to RG3. It and I aren't on the same page so that takes precidence. In the meantime, I took some of the DeVol gaurds off, mounted someRMZ plastic from my 125 and started going through the whole thing. The guy I bought it from was big on the bling but he needed some help on setup and bike maintanence in general. I will say that as I get further into it, I would be surprised if this thing has 20 hours on it. The frame doesn't even have scratches on the bottom. Pic below is the bike as of today.

I'd be interested in jetting specs also:

05 RM 250
Fresh OEM top end
PC pipe and 304 silencer
V-3 reeds
927 @ 32-1

100 oct pump gas
(I only like to mix 1-2 gals at a time--- as needed)

** Sea level --- Cali (65-75 degrees right now)

*** And what gearing for a little more for jumps out of the corner Smile

it should be noted, *credit cards* only, debit does not work. havent been there in forever, but it was also $8 last time i was there, but again, CC only and trying to run your debit card as CC doesnt work either.

anyone in socal wanna hit me up and tell me where to get AV gas in the carlsbad/san diego area without a fight?
