I gotta figure most people would pick Pawn Stars but for me it's a tossup. I guess because the Pickers are fairly local to me. I stopped at the gas station right next to their shop many times over the years and never knew. I always go through there on the weekend so they are never open. Yeah, I'm a goober.

Pawn Stars is sad, the people that go to those guys are generally at the end of their rope and they get screwed. I like it but it is depressing at the same time.

I like them both pretty well but will have to say I have actually learned a few things from Pawn Stars on the history of certain items people bring in.

Watched Hardcore Pawn last night (the one where they try to buy some guns and the guy at the gun store kicks them out). Pawn Stars is a great show, and I also like the history of the items and the specialists they bring in to examine the items. Hardcore Pawn is like the "Jerry Springer" version of Pawn Stars. Hated it.

X2. I also hate how they try to act tough and all puffy chested all the time. I actually enjoy pickers a little mainly because of the attitude of the two guys. The seem like genuine good people with a good attitude with people and their possessions.

it's a business. Why would you pay someone $200 for an item worth $200 if you couldn't make money on it? You pay $75 and sell at $200 to make a profit.
Far as loans, it's 3% a month and you have 90 days to pick it up or they sell the item.
sure, it's getting rich off people who can barely make it, but it's business. BIG business all across America.

I'm not sure how pawn shops can make it. I went in a local one a couple months back just to look around. I was the only one in the store and the prices were outrageous for old junk that I would never buy. They couldn't have been making a very good living doing what they were doing even if the profit margins are high.

Nobody is ever taken advantaged of at any pawn shop, it is voluntary.

Weather your selling or buying prices in Pawn shops are usually very negotiable.

If you are in one that is overflowing with stuff make a low-ball offer.

But based of my experiences most of what's in them is junk.

On one of the episodes I thought I heard one of them say that they have something like 40 employees. If that's true then that's a big payroll that they have to meet every month.

I don't see how the "picker" guys can make it... They don't seem to be making a lot of money. Maybe $500 - $600 per stop? At best...

I don't get that either.

My friend bought a pawn shop that was huge. He ran it with his father for 7 years and it averaged $900,000 gross a year. they sold after 7 years and now do payday loans and buy/sell jewelry (gold) and 2 weeks ago he told me they make way more than the pawn shop did.

On the other hand - several small pawn shops not far from me have pure shit and are always empty. I think the more shitty the location (neighborhood) the better they do.

I can't figure out how they can make it either without the TV show, and probably couldn't without the TV show. $120-150k a year wouldn't be enough to pay all 3 employees, the gas in the van to go to all of those places, the light bill and rent at the shop, etc, etc. Although their shop is extremely tiny and I can't imagine they would have sold much of anything before the show in the small town their shop is in, tucked in behind a gas station where nobody can see it. They would almost have to have an online business.

No, it's not. It's pretty pathetic for a business, actually.

How did you pull that number up? Are you saying that they make 300 stops a year??? I highly doubt that.

Come on Crashie.... We all know you're an adult too, and you can beat us all up (at the same time).

Obviously these guys are getting major cash from their TV package...but before that, how were they making it?
