The Everything About YZ Plastics Thread

Any of you fine folks know of a "restyle" rear fender that bolts onto a 2013 YZ without having to change the side number plates? I like the stock number plates, but would like to change the rear fender. I know that Cycra (I think) sells a restyle front fender that bolts right up to the older YZ models, but I've not seen a restyle rear fender that fits without having to change the side plates. Thanks in advance!

I believe UFO makes the fenders and everything. Check them out

Thanks, Matty. The question still remains though. Will that fender work with the stock plates?

The fender from UFO shouldn't have any issues. It mounts up exactly the same just from the seat back is a different shape. You could always call UFO and double check

Dont do that, mix matching styles turns them into frankenstein bikes that look hideous. Just get the new style rear end kit (air box, side pannels, fender)

It will work, but will look like shit.

Go with OEM Yamaha restyle plastics kit, cost less than the UFO kit and fits way better.

I looked at the fit on my friend's restyled kit.
You would have to do just a little trimming to the number plate panel where it contacts the sides of the fender.

Here is the OEM kit needed to update an '02+ YZ, minus the front number plate.

As far as I know they are just an online retailer, but they sell OEM parts for most manufacturers. They are just bundling these '15 parts together and selling them as a kit for us guys that want to update.

Just go to your local Yamaha and tell them you want all of the parts in the RockyMountain kit for a 2015 bike. There is a OEM part number for each part, and all dealers will be able to find the parts.

Racetech do an update kit with the air box in as well.
It's a lot cheaper than the UFO one and I'm guessing the OEM one too. It's available in the UK.

It'll work, it just doesn't look great. With the updated sidepanels, they match up nice/seamlessly.

You could always just get the rear fender and try it with the old number plates before you splurge on the whole kit. What do you have to lose?
10/5/2015 12:39pm
True, burn. The newer look has grown on me since getting the 2015 125, so I think I'm going to just buy the parts. Thanks to each of you for the advice.

This is what I think I will do. I read somewhere on here that the parts were $198 total. That's cheaper than the Rocky Mountain kit.

You might "lose" $36 on having a spare fender... Nothing wrong with that.
As I said above, I checked the fit and the older 2002-2014 number plates will fit with a tiny amount of trimming.

I haven't picked up the new style fender yet, but I think I will. I re-shaped a set of stock 2011 number plates with a utility-knife and put them on my old 125. I tried to make them look more like my '14 YZ450F.

Not sure what the deal on the airbox is, the OEM one is one piece.

The OEM airbox is actually multiple pieces with pop-rivets holding it together. I'll bet those Racetech airbox panels require you to drill out the old rivets and re-assemble the airbox with the new panels and some new rivets.

Earlier in the year a phoned a Yamaha dealer & the guy gave me the price for genuine plastics & airbox for a 2015 and it came to about £300, that works out to $454. Way to expensive.

Edit: sorry that wasn't including the airbox just plastics

Its pretty damn close to that if you go the OEM route.

Fitment is 10x better than the UFO stuff

Thanks, Iceman! You're not the only one that I've heard say that about OEM versus after-market.

Thanks, I just put a few pieces of masking tape on each plate, then cut along the tape. I de-burred the edges so it's not a sharp cutting edge.

As far as the UFO plastic, nothing fits like OEM, but if your radiators and sub-frame are straight-ish, the UFO stuff looks good once it's on the bike and it doesn't require any re-drilling in my experience.

The Acerbis plastic fits these YZ's better than UFO, but still not as good as OEM. I typically reach for Acerbis unless I need an odd color kit. I have UFO on my white bike, for example.

Poli-Sport is good for some bikes, but not for the YZ in my opinion. It's thin, even where the bolts go through and doesn't fit as well as the other options and the shrouds have some nasty sharp edges where they blend into the fuel tank. Right there where your knees rub... Funny considering Poli-sport makes the OEM KTM plastic and they are pretty nice.

The real challenge is finding a good looking rear fender for a late model KX500, to replace the snow shovel. Just sayin

Honestly, I will never buy plastics unless they are OEM. Minus the Cycra front number plate. The fit and finish is just so much better and the OEM stuff comes with the metal inserts.

I did the conversion and everything fit perfectly. I did have to get the 13 front fender, since they changed the triple clamps to match the four strokes. You could get the newer style, you would just have to drill out the fender.
