for 4 grand? There is a lot more to that bike in parts , labor, materials and even paint that there is in a CRF250 that cost nearly twice that. And for something that is going to be thrashed about in the mud and dirt. They must see "us" coming from a mile away!Laughing

How much does a CRF230F sell for? That would be a better comparison IMO. Costs aren't driven only by the size of the piston.

Seeing as the cbr is a 23.7 hp machine with 4 inches of non adjustable travel that is assembled on Thailand or India(wiki) and uses the same tooling since probably the mid 80's to produce....I can see why is it cheap. But that two stroke smoke must be clouding your vision on reality

The only ads I get on the right side are gay dating sites and ads to increase the size of my penis....

What's up with that! ;-)

If you are saying 2X the cost is due to the R&D for higher performance, i can somewhat understand...But, how do you expain the cost of the YZ125 and YZ250 that hasn't changed in 7 years? Even the YZ250F hasn't really been majorly updated thru the years. The street bike has twic as much plastic, more electronics and I'm pretty sure there are a lot more legal hoops to go thru (lawyer time) to bring and keep in market than a off road dirt bike.

Newmann, you are correct that they see us coming. Example, a four wheel drive quad with power steering, auto transmission, lights, winch, fuel injected, and full racks - $7,200.00. A new 450, any model, has two wheels, one piston, and just now have fuel injection for $8,000.00. I asked our local dealer about the price discrepancy and he stated there is more testing in the 250s and 450s than in the quads and also that they sell large amounts of quads as opposed to MX bikes. I say bullshit and bring on the electrics and Chinese bikes to break the stranglehold the four Japanese OEMs have on the market. Full on collusion if you ask me.

Never mind, Honda had a rebate which allowed dealers to "blow out" CBR-1000's for $5995.!!

You'r right, Thats pretty crazy when a CRF is $8500.

Somebody mentioned the Chinese... it would be interesting if they could create a raceable dirt bike for $4-5K. It would actually be beating the Japanese at their own game from the early 70s.
Shit, almost everything we buy as consumers is from China. Why couldn't they make a non-shitty dirt bike?

I see where you're coming from, but everything that comes out of China is shitty quality so why would the dirtbikes be any different?

Have after it bro! Although even the Chinese think it's worth more than 5k. I think it retails for 7.

Edit: I just realized this is an MCR450.. someone put Odes onto the Alessi's for copyright infringement! If you're gonna race an MCR it might as well be the real deal.

Newmann, you're exactly right. They've got us over a barrel, they know it and probably fear the day when it all comes crashing down. They've created the monster themselves by going away from what originally put them on the map back in the late 60's-early 70's but can't reverse it without admitting that they fucked up and it seems that issue is not covered in the Japanese Handbook of Life. As long as the Pros race $8000, 250lb 4 strokes, kids will continue to buy them in their quest to be the next Roger DeCoster, David Bailey or Ricky Carmichael.

The German economics professor at my 4 year university rambled on and on about supply and demand and a bunch of other stuff I just noted for exam purposes. I'm pretty sure the answer to this conundrum lies somewhere in one of those long-winded lectures. Manufacturers do not sell many motocross bikes compared to road bikes, yet the R&D and manufacturing costs are high. That means motocross bikes are going to cost more than road bikes, relatively speaking.

As someone else mentioned, the exception is the 2-stroke YZ line. You would think they would have recovered the R&D and manufacturing costs on those bikes long ago. I have to believe the profits on the 2 strokes are keeping the MSRP on the revolutionary backwards engine tornado pipe bike below $10k.

There is a lot of reasons why the cbr250 is the price it is but the main difference is Honda will sell more CBR250's in 1 month than they will sell CRF250's in a year. The other big reason is Honda builds the CBR250 in Thailand versus Japan or America.

The Japs have always been better at technology than economics. They're obviously better than us, but they've screwed up somewhere along the way.

Also, a CBR250 is an "entry" bike. They look at that machine as a way to gain new riders to the sport and latch them onto the brand. A more direct comparison in MX terms is a CRF50 (or 90/100.) Maybe a CRF230.

Post a reply to: That CBR250 ad to the right...
