Question for the diehards

Edited Date/Time 1/25/2012 4:18am
Should they have called that race? Could they have called it? Tim E said they had no choice...but did they? Can you remember a big sporting event that they have called? Ironically NASCAR has called/postponed events before due to weather. IF they were in charge last week would they have..could they have?

I have seen conditions at local races as bad or worse than that. But the race never was held so we'll never know if they were worse I guess.

Rain or shine

No they shouldn't have called the race.

A motocross race should only be cancelled in the event of lightning/tornadoes, etc.

Rain, shine, sleet, snow...let 'em race!

We had a local event canceled this past weekend because of snow, I heard anywhere from 4"-10".

The track owners originally felt they could get the track decent, but with road conditions as bad as they were, plus they'd probably been pulling people in and out of the pits they called it.

I felt like it was the right call, but again, this was not a National event.

I'm glad they ran Daytona, it was an exiting race where anything could, and did, happen!

No, they shouldn't have.

They had the Daytona 200 the next day along with a Superbike race, those could not be moved because the 200 was to be on Speed Channel live. That would've only left Sunday as an alternate day, but what do you do about the fans and teams hotel and travel arrangements?

It had to run

this was a SX race though.

They called some races back in the day for either the track was washed away or you couldn't get yer wide tire'd sinbin into the pits.

I agree dave. but everybody always say the OEM's run the show. There's no way the OEM's wanted to race in those conditions. No way....

I guess maybe they don't have as much clout as people say eh? hehehe

I think a "professional" should have to race in all conditions, regardless if it's SX or MX.

As far as the nationals, I could see them cancelling a race because of flooded roads...similar to what happened a few years ago.

my feelings also - MX is about running in the elements. SX - well, I was wondering how they were going to handle this, [i:2j3ij2yr]particularly[/i:2j3ij2yr] when they said there was lightning in the area -

I'm glad they made the decision to run. What a classic -

i say turn the water on all the tracks and keep it going. that was the most exciting race i've seen in years! I'm just kidding of course but that sure was entertaining.

Doug Henry beat everyone, including the invincible Jeremy McGrath, at Texas Stadium in 95 in a HAIL storm. Until last weekend, that was the muddiest SX race I ever witnessed. Yes. Between marble and golf ball-size hail fell for about 2-3 laps in a heat race and it poured down rain pretty much the rest of the program. Henry was still tripling everything. It was cool.

Race goes on rain or shine. However, I would've rather watched them race on a dry RC/Barnett designed track. Maybe next year.

no reason to cancel that race unless the lightning was threatening. The track was passable.

Troy was cancelled, but it was several feet underwater.

I think they should repair the track and run it prepped next week! Looked like it would have been awesome dry.

You kinda miss all the cool details of style and action during a mud race. It pretty much turns into a comedy past a certain point. I think that point was pasted somewhere after the heat races. Would any of you ride your own bike in that mess, I wouldn't. I would have rather watched the race if it were dry...

No, it was funny...really funny

When you see a guy's bike stuck and standing wheelie up, and then the rider standing on the side of his bike while propped into the air to try and dislodge it, it's funny

It was sad to see Mike McDade actually catch and challenge RV for the lead in the heat, only to hit a deep soft hole in a corner and come to a complete stop.

It had it's high and lows, but there were funny parts for sure.

BTW, Troy Adams just leaving his bike in the middle of the track and not even trying to get it out, just leaving it and walking away was disappointing to me.
and Troy's a friend

AMA has cancelled outdoor MX because of rain before. Just ask the riders about Troy.

RV missed the hole
It was covered with a sheet of water, it was a crap shoot
All of us near there knew where it was and which rut led to it, so we sat and waited.

McDade was good in the mud and that is truly a missed story of that night. He really did actually catch RV and just as he was going for the pass, he hit an undersea wall and stopped dead.

Needless to say, he was pissed

Troy was totally underwater, including the pits, some areas were as much a several feet underwater and completely hiding jumps

Good to hear about Mcdade challenging RV this is the first time I've even heard that mentioned. Good for him.

Comedy? Holy fuck, ask Reed or Windham how funny they thought it was. That was a damn fine effort by Reed, Windham, etc. 110% all the way. Comedy my ass![/quote:2aecc3nr]

If you went up and down the line at the start of either mains and asked any of the riders if they wanted to race that track what do you think they would have said? Man that race was a joke. SXes should not be ran under those conditions. Safety becomes an issue. MX is another story. I give it up to all the riders for their effort but still think the race should have been canceled.

rain and flooding are a little different, troy had a river running through it!

but thats why this sport is unique and for the normal non race guy to watch that race, likley brought them in as a fan of the sport. because those guys don't quit and rain, mud, sleet or snow most times don't stop it....... Hell the mailman don't do that anymore!

that track was plenty safe, i would rather crash in 2 ft of mud then short jump a wall faced triple. there was nothing more unsafe in this mud race then anything normal, in fact i would say it would be safer. It's why the privateers were able to shine it levels the playing field.

I believe this race showed what kind of charactor these riders have and it's pretty dam cool.

If you got bikes sticking out of the track with riders walking off, it's not a race it's poor judgment on the guys calling the shots.... It's a joke for both the riders and the fans. First time watchers are going to think it's funny but thats about it. Say what you will, I would have rather watch it in dry conditions. In 87 I ran one of those at gatorback. No fun and you fuck bikes up.
3/10/2008 12:18pm
Dave thats some funny shit right there.

I remember passing a friend once at Red Bud. He was stuck in the mud up to the pegs of his bike. The bike was standing strait up and he was standing on the seat, waiving both arms for the tractor to come pull him out. This was on a strait, not even in a corner. This also was just an open ride day and there were over 250 people there riding in the slop... It was great fun.
I am not calling out Atlanta but I lived there for 2 years and if it rained a 1/4 of an inch on friday they canceled the races on saturday. Thats a true fact..
I know track owners there and I asked them why that was and they said cause no one would show up so they just cancel them.

Different attitude about riding I guess. I think its that you guys in the south take it for granted that you can ride all year where we in the north only get to ride half the year and ride as much as we can when we can.
Daytona is only once a year, if they had canceled the race then it would have been done and no possibility to make it up later. Better to let them run it..
