I'm officially getting my oldest son (2 years 4 months) into MX. Bought him a Stacyc but its not here yet and a guy at work has a PW for $300. So my question is what are the need to knows about the PW. He may not even ride it for another year or so but I've never had a PW so not sure what maintenance entails. What's the best fuel? Oil change intervals? Other secrets?

Pump fuel without ethanol will work fine. Make sure for the engine oil you use 2 stroke oil that is meant for injection systems, assuming this PW still has it and it hasn't been bypassed. Crankcase oil drain is right below the left footpeg if I remember correct. I always ran 10-50 yamalube in there. Shaft drive so I believe that used normal hypoid gear oil. With my oldest I turned the throttle screw in quite a way and put a strap on the rear fender support that I could use to hold him back until he got a hang of adjusting the throttle position instead of just wide open all the time.

Also, in the crazy overpriced times we are in right now grab that PW for $300 before he changes his mind!!!!

It's the simplest bike ever. Make sure it doesn't run out of oil and put in non-ethanol gas.

Then let him ride the wheels off of it!! Exciting stuff my man!

If you let him marinate on that stacyc and dont try to push him too fast, he'll be able to jump to the pdub with no training wheels.

Pdub is easy. I recommend a new bolt kit. Old $300 bike has been passed around and you dont want to learn which ones are stripped when your at the track. It also matters whether the oil pump has been plugged or not so find out. Change out the top end if you want. Other than that just let him ride it and make sure he enjoys it before you put $ into it to make it fast. They are pretty damn reliable as is.

When he gets to it later there is the different gear for the rear on it. You can also unplug one of the connectors behind the front number plate this changes the switch to just run and off and gives it a couple hundred more rev RPMs. Other than that just actual knobby tires.

My son turns four in August and he has been asking me every morning when I leave for work if we can go buy him a dirt bike when I get home for over a year. No dealer around me has a PW50 in stock; does any dealer in the US still have them? Do I have to wait for the 2021's to arrive? Anybody know when the 2021 PW50's will arrive?

Just buy a used one man it's been the same bike since like 1983. It doesn't take much to freshen one up at all.

That was the plan but if they can be found used they are near or at the MSRP.

We ended up buying a brand new one for my son almost 2 years ago. Price wasn’t much more than a 10 year old PW on Craigslist and Facebook. Figured new would be completely unmolested and I know no one has done anything funky with it.

No kidding seems like I see them pretty regular around here for $500. Bought ours for $450 I think but that's been about 10 years ago too. Never would have guessed it.

Anybody got a picture of this?
