New National In Michigan.

Looks like the president of Monster Energy bought a bunch of land in northern Michigan and wants a national caliber track.

He's not only building a MX track there but an off-road truck racing facility. The people in that area who oppose the rezoning and such risk loosing a serious financial shot in the arm to the community. The entire state of Michigan has been hurting for awhile and especially in the area where the track is going to be built.

I think the nay-sayers are going to have to suck it up because an overwhelming amount of people in that area want this to happen.

Good luck to him and I hope he makes it happen...don't hold your breath for a National just yet but something bigger might be on the horizon and I've been told.

I live about an hour south and had to look at Indian River on a map.
For sure nothing there. The region has so much opportunity for events like this as NW Michigan thrives on vacationers and such.

Looks like all kinds of tracks will be built there, per the article and also it's not like he just picked a spot, says he's from there and grew up there, that helps. and from what i read and you pointed out, that city does need the shot in the arm. it's proven that cities and areas where tracks are the city stands to make good money. catalina 2 years ago had the grand prix, the city in december (which is among their worst months for revenue) grossed over 4 million dollars, the city & businesses are still screaming they want the gp back.

Whoa...hold up a second...about Catalina...(*)

Two things:

1. Some of the Island-Douche-Bag "This is our Island" types have been a REAL PROBLEM for the would-be promoters...

2. The D-37/Promoter of the Day/Week (Seems they've been playing Musical Promoters these last few years) relationship seems a bit strained.

I've tried to help, on a few ocassions, with Sponsors/Title Sponsors...and the guys running things don't sound too realisitic. There's one guy that seems to be a helluva guy...a local fireman-come-MXer...I think...he's the one Bright-Spot. Last I heard this guy was getting the bigger problems fixed.

As a former resident of Michigan I love this idea! Indian River a near a couple great inland lakes and not far from Gaylord. I have spent alot of time in the area and this would be a huge improvement for the local economy.

The problems is that there are alot of people with money that retired up there, not Monster energy money but alot of "not in my backyard" types. Also they aren't very far from Traverse city where there is tons of yuppie tree huggers to the likes of Michael Moore and his other hollywood types. Hopefully they make it work. It would be a sick track with lots of elevation, and sand!

It will be an up hill battle dealing with the locals. There was a guy who tried to do the same thing in Harrison MI. He was a self made wealthy guy. The track was michigan motomania. Bought 200 acres dumped a ton of money into the facility. The locals and city battled with him so much he lost everything including wife and kids to try to make it work. Just found out this year that the motocross track is closed and hes out. It was shaping up to be a great track too.

There is a website called Trackthemotocrosstrack.com that is already trying to stop it. I have a place less then a mile away from the location and would love to see a track built there. GOOD LUCK MR. HALL

yep, i know doug personally (michigan moto mania). poor guy tried so hard to make it work, bent over backwards for everyone and the yuppies killed his dream.

this place was in the sticks too. he had a bad neighbor that basically went to the twp, bitched, and bitched...got a bunch of other towns people against him and then they basically took over the council and made his life miserable.

someone nailed it earlier. retired people. they retire from detroit and other big cities down south sell everything they got and move north. They hate everything that doesn't include bird watching. Our snowmobile trails are fighting to stay alive every year. our recreational trails are battling tree huggers every year.

I envy what this guy wants to do but I will seriously be surprised if he gets any approval to do anything. My boss has cabin in Indian River and i'm up there all the time. I also have a cabin 30 minutes away so this is right up my alley...hope something happens.

Here's the latest on this from a local newspaper. Sounds somewhat encouraging that it might happen. Clearly the guy from Monster wants an MX National in his hometown in 2 years. What current venue gets the boot and does Michigan deserve 2 events? Good weather, elevation and dirt up in that part of the state.

I have a summer cottage 30 minutes from the location so here's hoping it happens.

Hypothetically, is there enough of a fan base that would attend a race up there?

The area is beautiful and has lots of camping and trails for riding plus some great ski resorts. Should be interesting.

I strongly believe they would attract alot of fans. Being that it is near other big tourist destinations and there is a pretty solid motosports base up there I think it would be good.

Hopefully there is enough common sense people to keep the vocal minority out of it.
