I always assumed he was a poseur who took the odd photo, however after this vurb moto interview I have gained massive respect for the guy...hes got a great head on his his shoulders... Check it out:
Yeah, you missed the mark by a lot with the poser comment.
I totally agree, I think I mistook his image (always looking the part with his sleeves and cali look) for lack of ability... Anyway seems like a top bloke, passionate about his craft, and does stunning work..

Hence the "however", jeez.
I kind of assumed the same, when you see someone hover around the background not really knowing who they are you tend to start generating a judgment. It's wrong. Dood takes some mad photos with thought behind it, they don't have the feeling of a point and shoot with an expensive camera like the majority of the photo takers around here.

What's funny is that he didn't have any visible tats for a long while...except maybe a small Black Flag one on his wrist, and had the sleeves completed in a very short time span.
very cool video and nice to see garth get some props, he's usually fine with being in the background and letting his work do all the talking. because of the tattoo's and him shooting a lot of freestyle I can see why people may assume he's just "one of the bro's" but that couldn't be further from the truth. He's a devoted vegan and pretty much chills on the reg with his dogs and wife. just a really nice, genuine person.
i'm fortunate enough to call all the MCG guys - Garth, Cooley, and Luis, good friends and it's great to see their success as they're all super talented.
Hence the "however", jeez.

What's even funnier is the pictures Donn use to post in Transworld from Garth's modeling days.
I saw the old modelling pics that SWAP posted (printed?) of Garth. He must've been about 17 and I guess he was working with some modelling agency. Straight up Sears Clothing Catalog stuff! The boy next door....blonde hair, somewhat preppy looking. On the way to making a career as a male model.
Then, about the time that Freestyle got really popular, Garth is suddenly all tatted up and hard core.
So yeah, I thought there was some poserness there too.
HOWEVER....
a) making a judgement like that about someone you don't know is totally unfair....and I realized that.
b) a few years ago I was looking through some old Cycle News mags and ran through the So Cal race results from back in the day. I saw Garth in there quite a bit. Seems he was doing a lot of So Cal racing in the Intermediate class back in the day.
Hahaha. Damn! Cox, Garth, and I at 'Shougal 2008. What a funny photo!
Glad people are enjoying the interview with Garth. Total our interview was about 35-minutes long, so I wish I could've ran the whole thing. Maybe we'll run the second part later on down the road.
That's the first I've ever seen him in an interview, and from it, I'd like to hang out with him...he seems like a genuine, down to earth, centered, driven, talented, easy going guy. What's not to like?

Hahaha. Right? It was from a crash at Perris. Completely destroyed my ankle, nerves, and some ligaments. Did the entire outdoor season with a cane and walking boot. Figured I needed to make things as difficult as possible on myself. Ha

I'm the one always yelling at you fuggers to get outa the way.
Garth not only has skills behind the lens, but as anyone that raced MX in Socal in the 90's can attest to, he's got serious skills on a dirt bike, too!

There are so many gifted people out there, true professionals, in "the background"
Unbelievable.

his story was told in the magazine when he got the job with Transworld
ever hear the saying never judge a book by it's cover??? live it.....open it and read the preface before making judgement

c) I started noticing his work. Good stuff!
In the end, I changed my opinion. He's legit.

Behind the fence, of course... hehe.
