Farewell
by Ryan Villopoto

It is with gratitude, humility, a bit of sadness but without regret, that I announce my retirement from motorcycle racing today.

As many of you know, I experienced a pretty horrendous crash back in April that left me with multiple fractures in my tailbone along with soft tissue damage. My initial thought was that I could be back riding in a few weeks if I just stayed quiet for a while. That has not proven to be the case. Follow-up X-Rays have made clear that I also suffered severe compression of multiple disks in my lower back. I am still in significant discomfort and I realize that even if I start my fitness program and training now that I been cleared by my physician, I will not be able, prior to the end of the MXGP season, to achieve the fitness necessary for me to compete at the level I have always striven for.

I am grateful for having had the opportunity to do something I have loved since I was a kid and turn it into my livelihood. I am grateful for the support of my family for all the years they spent hauling my bikes and me around to races, interrupting their lives in the process.

I am grateful for the support of my many sponsors through the years. What people don’t often think about, when it comes to individual “action” sports like motocross, is that we rely on sponsors to compete. In motocross, the sponsors aren’t just a name on your jersey – they are part of your racing team. If they are good, they are sponsors in the truest sense of the word. They are involved in building the best bike, putting together the best team, supporting your training, and so much more. So, with that in mind, first and foremost I want to thank Kawasaki, which has been my bike of choice since my Team Green days. They have been with me through ups and downs, serious injuries and great successes. They’ve always cared about me and I’ve been successful in large part because of it. THOR/Parts Unlimited and Monster Energy Company have been with me through it all as well. Thanks also to DC, GoPro, Oakley, Alpinestars, Atlas and Mobius Braces. Each of you has been an integral part of making this an amazing career.

I want to thank my long-time agent, my friend, Bobby Nichols, and his agency The Sports Syndicate, for the strong guidance and support they have offered my entire career.

But most of all, I’m writing this retirement note to my fans. I am grateful for the hundreds of thousands of fans, not only in the U.S., but throughout the world. It is amazing to know that you have cared so much and been so supportive along the way.

That gets me to the sadness about making this decision now. I was so stoked to make the decision to be a part of MXGP racing. It has always been important to me to ride my best and to be in the best possible position to give my best, in part because of wanting to give back to you, the fans. I am sad that this year did not work out the way I had hoped in that regard. I wanted to be at my best, to compete with these riders who are among the very best in the world and leave it all out on the track as each of them does every race. The sadness is that I only got to do that for a few races.

I am grateful to have had the chance to race with the very best in world, my competitors in Supercross and Motocross in the States as well as those who make the MXGP what it is. I am grateful to know that our competitiveness helped to continue the growth of our sport.

I leave with no regrets. I have been blessed to experience so much of life through my racing. I have never wanted to disappoint my fans nor my supporters and my hope is that for the most part I have lived up to that.

Again, thanks to each and every one of you who have been a part of my team.

Sincerely,

Ryan Villopoto

I'm happy that I got to see this guy race a few times, he is one of the greats of this sport and a really down to earth person if you have ever had the chance to talk with him, best of luck in the future RV2!!

Thanks for the update RV! Go kill some elks and enjoy retirement.

I wonder if he'll be around in the industry in a year or so after he takes a little break. I always like to see former champs sticking around and continuing to participate.

Fair play to the bloke for having the balls to come and race the gps would have liked him see the year out but it is what it is. Just goes to show to a fair amount of americans that gps are just as hard as ama and the riders are just as fast

As fans,we are grateful to have had the experience of witnessing a tremendous career, to have shared in your success, and to have had the privilege of being represented by you on the international stage. As one of the greatest motocross and supercross racers of all time, you will be missed immeasurably, but never forgotten. Wishing you and your family all the health and happiness that good fortune can bestow. Adios amigo.

What a man! Should be proud to know his had an impact on pretty much everyone who's thrown their leg over a dirtbike. RV's given us a new outlook on understanding the struggles that surround being that successful in a sport like this. Whatever you do next do it for you man, cheers for the memories and inspiration you radical ranga! Grinning

Like I said before, we have another Larry Ward on our hands. Enjoy that statement because that's the last you'll ever hear of him !

Please read your own statement Hammertime.

There's already been an announcement that Ryan will continue on as a brand ambassador for Kawasaki, we'll be seeing more of him in the future.

Let's keep this thread civil and intelligent.

Much as I criticized him for his personality...I have always been in awe of his ferocity & skill as a racer. He was absolutely a badass, and I wish him well.

Don't get me wrong I'm not saying that's a bad thing. I'm happy for him to do whatever he wants. Deserves it for all those good whiskey throttle moments we have enjoyed!

MXoN -- Budds Creek ' 07. ANNIHILATION of ALL on his 250F... Crossed the line by a wide margin in front of 2nd place. 30 seconds+ comes to mind

It is funny to think him and Zach Osborne came into the Pros together, and now, almost a decade later, one is retiring a legend, and the other is still in the 250 class. Hopefully he doesn't drop off the map, maybe a pulpmx show co host one week? Would love to hear him now that he doesn't have to worry about pissing any sponsors/teams off.

I was lucky enough to be at the Glen Helen Final that year, i saw RV and BT walking back from the riders meeting joking around and laughing like a couple of kids racing 80's, it was cool to see both of them just enjoying racing and being around, even tho millions were on the line,

I hope RV enjoys his retirement, he is one of the all time legends of this sport, 9 titles don't lie

RV truly did it "My Way." When I met him, he was open and happy to meet a fan. In my opinion, one of the greatest motocrossers of all time. Manifesting him and his family the best!

Gutted that we never got to see the anticipated season long showdown between Ryan and Toni.

However, I will always hold him in the highest of regards, for what he accomplished in the states; to absolutely dominate, to return from serious injury more than once and for having the balls to do what no other American at his level has ever done, but to also take the decision to entertain us Europeans on our own turf, not just for the nations but for what was hoped to be a whole season.

He's taken a lot of shit on here in the last few weeks, from both sides of the pond, and I can imagine this kills him to walk away from his pro career in this manner.

Ryan, you've been a great champion, I've loved watching you race from the first time we saw you in person at Matterly Basin in '06, hope you make a speedy and full recovery to allow you to live a rich and fulfilled life post pro racing.

What a buzz you've created for the GP's, and not just for US fans but those of us worldwide.

Nice farewell letter... I would like to think he wrote it "with some help".

Huge fan of that rear wheel, WFO style ever since I saw his pro moto debut at GH. And unlike some others, I like his personality too. He's the real deal and says what he means and I'll take that over some sugar coated BS any day.

Good luck with future Endeavors Ryan.

Probably the most poignant and well composed farewells of any. Sounded truly from the heart and gracious.
